Who gets this gig? Narduzzi? The Kent St. coach?
Per the article, Dave Doeren from NIU might get a look, and for some reason, the "Tressel to all schools" came up at the end of this piece. Doeren would be interesting and this would be a "next level" job for him - he was the DC at Wisconsin and has led NIU to two straight 11-win seasons.
Doesn't JT have a show-cause for another few years? Maybe I'm wrong
until 2016 according to hammer and rails.
Also, he doesn't have a mustache (neither does Doeren), which is a must for the modern Purdue coach. As far as I know, Jerry Kill is the only viable option.
-Yay, another mustache joke.
--Do I fit in yet?
Temple Head Football Coach - Steve Addazio
1880s mustache?
Not a surprise. Not a big deal, but why is information about a B1G coach OT?
Probably just standard precaution with this crowd.
Glad you said it, and not me.
Tough call to can Hoke but they have not moved ahead and they have some talent at Purdue. Will not be surprised if they pick a MAC coach.
In their division Purdue finished a game behind Wisconsin and well back of Penn State and Ohio State. They lost by 3 at ND and took OSU to OT in Columbus.
This seems like a change for change's sake at a middle of the pack program. College football is a zero sum game (win or lose) and somebody has to finish in the middle of the standings. I don't see a coach making them better than the programs above them without finding the next Drew Brees, and that will be no easy task.
Maybe this is an instance of a Big Ten school burning through some of that BTN money that is pouring in. Why not take a stab at someone decent, instead of the same old promote from the MAC?
Of course, this being Purdue...they'll hire someone completely boring and unwhelming. One can hope though...
Purdue has won 53% of their games all time. The last two seasons Hope has won 52% of his games.
As an AD the choice is between admitting you are Purdue or acting like there is more hope without Hope. One of those choices probably helps you sell more tickets than the other.
that ever came out of the MAC.
The irony of a Michigan fan being derisive about hiring out of the MAC.
Brady Hoke, Randy Walker...yeah, all those crappy MAC coaches.
But you have to keep in mind, the coach before Hope - Joe Tiller - was much more successful, and not just when Brees was there. Tiller went 87-62 at Purdue and 53-43 in league play. Hope went 21-27 and 12-19, respectively. Their goal is obviously to find another Tiller. Hope seemed unlikely to be that guy.
I'm definitely not a Danny Hope fan, so I can see them wanting to go in another direction. I just think it is unlikely that they find another Tiller. He brought an offense nobody had really seen before, especially in the Big Ten (those first few games they played against ND were comical with the Irish having no idea how to defend bubble screens then getting burned over the top). And there isn't a lot of room to jump up in the standings except when PSU begins to feel the sanctions. Michigan, OSU, Wisconsin, MSU, and Nebraska are all stronger now and have more institutional advantages. They are already ahead of Iowa (could easily slip behind them), Illinois, and Indiana. On the recruiting trail, I think Pat Fitzgerald selling Northwestern academics probably has more to offer than new guy at Purdue, especially when you consider who they could actually get to take the job.
It's definitely not the easiest sell. They need to find a guy who can win without the greatest talent. Maybe Glen Mason wants another job?
I didn't know that our dear leader coached Purdue as well.
has defaulted to Hoke when I type Hope. Tried to edit but I am blocked out.
This opening has Darrell Hazell written all over it.
Does the Mustache stay and get passed on to the next coach, or are they expected to bring their own?
Its B.Y.O.M.
Maybe they should call Tim Beckman... He seemed ready for the big leagues. Oh wait, 2012 just happened...
Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here.
Weird fact about the Purdue locker rooms: they're actually in a separate little building from the stadium. You leave the stadium to go in the locker room. That struck me as kind of small-timey.
They won't ever really compete in football. Same for Minnesota, Indiana, Rutgers, and Maryland.
I basically agree with that, but here's a list of Big Ten schools that have made it to the Final Four since Purdue's last trip there:
Michigan
Michigan State
Illinois
Wisconsin
Minnesota (*)
Indiana
Ohio State
- - -
AFAIK Nebraska, Northwestern, and Penn State have never been there. Iowa's last trip was 1980 (same as Purdue). 30+ years ago ...
Purdue was a b-ball regular season co-champ in 2010.
Rutgers and Maryland might. They don't have a lot of history, but they're the flagship schools of talent-rich states.
Are very high school-y.
Hire John L Smith

All Hope is lost in West Lafayette.

Great job for Narduzzi.
Bad hire in the first place. He wasn't very good at Eastern Kentucky.
Who does Purdue think they are?
in Indiana that has to compete with ND, NW, Ohio, IL, MI, MSU & IN for decent players. Moreover, they pay their HC squat & have little tradition. Yes, I want to be a Boilermaker!!
I want Tressel to take the gig so we can start beating him every year
Narduzzi gets a look.
purdue students don't give a shit. basketball school.
.
I wonder if they had done this last year what their chances would have been getting Kevin Sumlin.
A choice between Texas A&M and Purdue? That's not even a close question.
Considering he didn't seem all that interested in Illinois, Purdue would have had no chance.
Wasn't Hope the lowest paid coach in the conference? If Purdue wants to compete, they're going to have to do better than that.
This is the news I have been waiting for since Hope took over for Tiller.
However, I doubt Burke opens the purse strings. He is a penny pinching douche.
When Roundtree decided to commit to Michigan, was it Danny Hoke who called Rich Rod a snake oil salesman?
No, it was Tiller.
Or snake oil
Interesting contrast for coaching candidates between SEC (Tenn, Ken, Ark, Aub) openings and Purdue.
Do they rate the job in B1G as better given a weaker set of competition & slower hook, or prefer SEC for the resources/talent/challenge? UK and Pur have more similarities than the other 3.
Folks here in SEC territory think Urban went north b/c he couldn't beat top tier in win-at-all-cost SEC and roster was declining (of course they tend to add "and a jilted coed").
The # of openings is growing fast so candidates might wait altogether. Fascinating carousel.
He was pretty damn good at Grand Valley State before ND. When would a better time to leave ND than when you're "on top". Right now is the best ND will get.
I don't know about him. Isn't Kelly an offensive guy? If so, it's hard to tell how much of this is him (not to mention the fact that their O hasn't been all that good anyway).
If they think that there is a guy out there who can make them much better than this is a good move, but otherwise you have a middle-of-the-road program suffering through middle-of-the-road seasons. Recruiting will never be great at Purdue, and unless you can catch lightning in a bottle like Tiller and catch the conference off-guard offensively, I have a hard time seeing the next guy being much better.
But, in typical Purdon't fashion, too late.
After he was such an a-hole to Richrod, I was thoroughly enjoying us beating Purdue down under Danny Hope's leadership and now it will just be some poor guy instead of Danny Hope which will make it much less enjoyable
Hate that prick.
Your coach should not be picked because he looks like you last coach.
No doubt this would not have happened if he hadn't blown an 8 point lead to Ohio State with 8 seconds to go and then sucked in OT.
oops double post
I came here for one thing, and I'm disappointed in all of you. Guess I'll have to do it myself...
I'm going to miss the easy win against him :'(
can I hope that the job goes to Borges?
Normally I wouldn't celebrate a man losing his job, but after the way this asshat acted at the end of the '09 game and his incessant negative recruiting against Rich Rod, I'll make an exception. Good riddance, you piece of shit.
