OT: This Damn Yankee is coming home

I just got a job back in Michigan and I will be back in time for football season. I guess I need to stop teaching my son to say "y'all" and "I'm fixin to..."

In my two years down here I've brought Alabama and Auburn national championships. I think it's pretty obvious why I wanted to come back home!

True Story

I was stuck in Bayou La Batre  AL for a summer and they sold Fago in town . Being the arrogant Michigan guy that I was I pointed out to all my Co-workers that loved it  to check where it was made….sadness ensued and I was happy.

I know "cool story bro".

We need to have a designated MGoTent out on the golf course where we can all meet up tell passersby how much better we are than them.

Absolutely.

We can each memorize a few key phrases and flag down passers-by, committee style.  "Sir? Did you know that DB's official press release called the Freep report intentionally misleading?"  "Ma'am?  Have you read Misopogon's Decimated Defense diary trilogy?  It's required reading to comprehend the Rodriguez era."  "Did you know we currently have the #1 rated recruiting class according to Scout?"

And so on.

More friendly advice

Also, you'll want to teach your son to stop saying "might could" (as in "I might could go somewhere") and teach him to say "pop" instead of "soda" (yuck!).

Seriously though, good luck on your relocation.  Represent us southerners in the Big House well!

The first time...

I heard "might could" it blew my mind. For the most part I enjoyed my experience down here, but that was one thing I could never understand. Just pick one of the words, either one will do! Saying "pop" has never been a problem and I never stopped saying it (I just added a smirk when I did).

I guess I will go back to just being a Yankee from now on since I'm no longer staying here.

Really good graph for Pop vs. Soda vs. Coke

So I am recently located to Houston, TX an I do the exact same thing as you, say Pop knowing everyone else will try to "correct" me. I found this really interesting study at one point that shows who says what by location.

My girlfriend and her family say this all the time! It's pretty funny. She also messes up sit/set, although maybe it's a pronunciation thing.

College

I remember stepping on campus in Ann Arbor and asking someone for a "soda" and their head about exploded.  After that, I waged a war against all references to "pop" just because I was looked upon as a freak by Michiganders for saying "soda."  Good times.

No, no.  In the south everything is a "Coke".  Even if it's not a Coke.

Sweet tea.  They love the sweet tea.  If sweet tea could be fried with a side of ranch...

Yeah, it's crazy.  My wife lives here now (brought her to the good side) and was born and raised in SC.  Even now she cringes at  non-sweet tea.

Full circle

Get this:  We live in NC and most of the local fast food joints are so keyed into sweet tea that you have to specifically spell out the fact that you want unsweet tea.  The tea down here is so sweet that it will pucker up your lips!

One thing that you will enjoy

is that everyone here seems to have complete disrespect for Ohio State (can I say that in here?). Also, you will be thanked repeatedly for Michigan getting RR instead of Alabama, even though those situations were separated by a year. I was wearing a Michigan golf shirt at Target this weekend and some guy came up to me and said, "RichRod." What a tool.

WTF!???

That EXACT same thing happened to me in Target here in NC the other day.  Some d-bag walked by and said "Rich Rodriguez" to me.  I simply called him a dork and kept walking.  Hahaha.

Confused about my situation...

I moved to Columbus with my fiance for work this winter....about the time that all the scandals came out.  You brought luck to Alabama.  So did I bring good luck to Ohio or did I bring bad luck...?  I'm inclined to think that I brought good luck to UM...but I need to be sure or I wont be able to move back to Michigan!

It might just be me, but I've

It might just be me, but I've never considered myself (from Michigan) as a "Yankee." I think we identify more with the midwest--Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, etc. To me, a Yankee is someone from the Northeast. I'm sure the New York Yankees kind of colors my views on that as well.

On the other hand, I'm sure people in Alabama call everyone not from the Deep South a Yankee. I've been to South Carolina, Louisiana, and Georgia, and they seem like they're still not over the War Between the States. If the OP was identified as a Yankee by the Alabamians, then I understand.

In no way

do I consider myself a Yankee. I get called a Yankee a least once a week down here. Then I get reminded about the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee. The first one is a northerner that comes to visit, the second one is a northerner to comes to stay. They can also get creative with other expletives in front of the word Yankee. It's a beautiful thing.

My first response to being called that was to say that I don't even like the Yankees. I was also told that I HAD to choose between Alabama and Auburn when I first arrived. Oops, I never did!

I always take...

I always take being called a Yankee as a compliment, at least I'm not a hick. I remeber the first time somebody asked me if I was "kin" to someone and I had absolutley no clue what he was talking about. I also couldn't figure out how you could have flat tar...It took me twenty minutes to realize he was trying to say tire. After 29 years here though I mostly understand what they're talking about, some of the accents/ terms still make me cringe but at least my children don't use hillbilly terms to refer to their grandparents (Mamaw, papaw (sp?) or some other stupidity for example).

Good call on the South

In Dixie, it's not the "Civil War;" it's "The War of Northern Agression."  That phrase is usually a pretty good sign that the person using it doesn't like "Yankees."

Get this . . .

When I first moved down to NC from the northeast, I was in court and had a FEDERAL judge call me a "Yankee" on the record one day!  He laughed and thought it was hilarious (all in good fun) but I was so embarrassed.  Its public record now and if someone really wanted to they could order a transcript of the hearing and read the exchange between me and the judge.  Brutal.

Nice

Somewhere on the 7th Circuit website there is a link to an oral argument in which Posner called my argument "the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard" before nearly falling off the bench in laughter

Good times.

The thing about being a Yankee is that a Yankee is something that someone else is but the speaker is not.

Welcome back But, I hope

Welcome back

But, I hope you are not planning on going to the 'Bama v. UM game in Dallas.   No offense, but I think you should just stay in the Great State of Michigan that weekend and root for UM from your living room.

I most certainly

plan on attending that game. That's one nice thing about living in Texas. Hopefully Jerryworld doesn't break my bank since my wife wants the whole family to go.

Welcome back, sir.

I was up at Mackinac Island last weekend and overheard a younger couple from Missouri talking at a bar we were at.  They just were in NYC, Philadelphia and Washington DC and went up to Mackinac for their final weekend.  They were pissed they didn't stay in Michigan the entire time.  It feels great to hear things like that.  Michigan is truly a great state.

Pretty jealous of those of you fortunate enough to return to the fatherland.  I'm stuck in DC for at least 4 more years in all likelihood.  Don't ever let anyone tell you that DC is a nice city - good to visit, shitty to live in.

I lived in NoVA and it was a great place to live.

Both are nice

I live in the city and I really enjoy it. NoVa would be a great place to live, too. In my opinion, the problem with living here IS the people that visit. Walking all slow and standing on the escalators and what not.

Detroit can't get its light rail soon enough...

Let's see, problems with DC:

Let's see, problems with DC: the weather is just horrible, the street layout looks like it was doodled by a 5-year old (7 way intersections? what?), and mass transit isn't much better, crime is too high, and it takes forever to get anywhere.  Part of these are, of course, simply beefs against big city life, which I will freely admit.  I don't know why people keep moving into big cities.  But DC is a particularly unpleasant incarnation of the phenomenon.  Every single day I think at least once or twice about moving out.

Thank goodness, though, for the Alumni Association down here.  Buffalo Billiards is a fantastic way to watch the games!

Different stroke

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I definitely enjoy city life, but if that's not your cup of tea, I can see why you wouldn't like DC. Agree on the weather - the summer are pretty terrible. But terrible traffic keeps me employed and not having a car keeps me away from it in the first place, so I can't complain. If it's any consolation, I can't see why people keep moving to suburbs either.

I don't do any alumni activities, but I definitely do need to make it to Buffalo Billiards a couple times this season.

Gainfully employed?

Did you find a high-powered legal job up there?

Well

Gainfully employed in a mild-to-moderate-power legal job; entry level job, but with a big name corporation (which makes me very fortunate in this climate). The irony of the whole thing is that my job essentially puts me on Michigan State's campus 45 hours per week.

Thanks again for your help a few months back.

Hey, congrats. I'm a native Michigander who moved out to California three and a half years ago and I still toy with the idea of moving back. Cali ain't all it's cracked up to be, and Michigan ain't as bad as it's cracked down to be. You don't realize that until you leave.

Welcome back to the great

Welcome back to the great state of Michigan.  As someone who hopped around the country/world for ten years and moved back a year ago, I'm almost a bit jealous: moving back is a great feeling.

Congrats! After 5 years of living in Arizona, I too am making the return back to Ann Arbor at the end of this month, and I am incredibly excited. Nothing makes you appreciate Ann Arbor more than living away from it. Its just that damn incredible of a city.

Welcome Back....

......to  everyone returning to Michigan. I have had the fortune of not only growing up around Ann Arbor, but going to school at the University Of Michigan and finding pretty good work with a major regional entity. Having been to many of the places people have mentioned here, it is always nice to come back to Michigan at the end of each trip. Wherever I go in the world, this state is always "home".

I actually have spent a decent amount of time in Alabama as well (about 7 years, although for 3 of them I was in school at UofM)...it definitely lives up to many of the stereotypes, although where I lived wasn't quite as bad (Huntsville). However, I'd say it was worth living there just to be able to experience an environment where the only show in the state is college sports. I got to go to the 2009 Iron Bowl, a truly unbelievable experience.

That said, I'll take being in Ann Arbor over anywhere else every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
