So we have a player who was drinking and driving and another who willingly got in the vehicle with him. At some point maybe people will wake up.

That's great in theory but I would guess in every community things like this happen and people still drink a drive. The fact of the matter is even if you make an "example" out of someone it doesn't resinate with anyone. It comes down to personal responsibility, especially with this subject and unfortunately, not everyone will make the right decisions.

Maybe. But this situation is a bit different in that, according to the article, the driver has already spent 60 days in jail for a drunk driving conviction while in college. My guess is that he is looking at serious time in jail and deservedly so.

Case in point- The guys spent 60 days in jail for the same thing which is a pretty hefty sentence for that charge in itself, yet he himself still drove.

when drunk. For some, there is an inabilty to make the decision not to drive when they are intoxicated. People in this category need not to drink at all. I feel for the people affected and their families.

Bob Kostos will go on another rant, this time about the culture of drinking in our society. It's a culture of lack of responsibilty for our actions, not guns & alcohol.

How is that fair to the person being made into an example. Not trying to justify his actions, I lost a friend eight days a go to an eerily similar situation. Just saying, how would it be fair to slap a 20 year sentence on this guy when the standard is 2? I am sure that he did not intend to kill his friend.
Once again, I am not trying to justify what happened. I am just not interested in burning someone at the cross to "make them an example."

Sad. When millionaires don't drop $100 for a ride home it's sad and frustrating. The Brown family's and Brent's lives will never be the same.

is quite remorseful, his past will not help his cause though. Very sad.

Just recently it was confrimed that Josh Brent has been charged with "Intoxication manslaughter"

A lifelong guilt trip knowing he killed his friend. I can't imagine living with that kind of guilt.

Sad story that didn't have to happen. Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected.

Given the technologies that car companies are coming up with for alcohol detection, I do think/hope that eventually we will see few deaths from drunk driving. If it's cheap, there's no reason not to have a simple detection system on every new car.

I'm thinking something mandatory.

Actually that wouldn't work people would just get someone else to do the deed for them and then drive off drunk. There's stories in the news about habitual drunk drivers that had those devices on their cars, they would get a sober friend to do the test so they could start their car.

Depends on the technology. I believe Toyota has developed a steering wheel than can detect BAC through the pores of your hand, so the engine could be shut off once you start driving.

Gloves. Also, people used baloons to beat the in car units before they started putting cameras in them.
December 8th, 2012 at 10:34 PM ^
If it can detect BAC through your skin, I'll bet they could it get it to detect gloves.

I really don't know if it's that much longer before the car starts driving itself, so we might be able to solve the whole problem very effectively.

This is similar to the Dany Heatley and Dan Snyder situation back in 2003
