OT: Daily's Rohan interning at NY Times, covered Santana no-hitter

A really well-written article, and surprising given the history of the momeny and his relative youth.  Credit should go to the NYT for allowing an intern to pen that story, and kudoes to Rohan for delivering a good story.

In somewhat related news, today's (Monday) NYT crossword puzzle was constructed by a very passionate Michigan grad, class of 1976. It is his first published crossword.



His father was Michigan Law class of 1935's salutatorian and he has two sons who graduated from UM ('07 & '12). I'm told he aims for a Michigan and James Bond reference in each puzzle, but today's version appears devoid of the former.

In Buster Olney's daily blog, he always posts links to random baseball articles. He's already linked to Tim Rohan's articles a couple times

i dont have enough points to start a thread, but I'm glad someone else thought this was postworthy.  Watched the end of the nohitter, and then the twittersphere helped me realize one of our Daily writers and recent grad lucked into having the honor of writing this up for the NYtimes.... Tim put together a very well written piece.  Another great accomplishment by a michigan man, in week 2 of his internship no less.  What a way to kick off a career in sports journalism.

c. Congrats to Tim Rohan, of the New York Times, for ably writing the Johan Santana no-hitter story ... in the second major league baseball game story he'd ever written. Tim's an intern from Erie, Pa., by way of the University of Michigan. I didn't recognize the byline in my Saturday morning paper, and I saw Pete Thamel of the Times congratulate Rohan on Twitter, so I reached out to him for the story.

Turns out he'd covered the Michigan football team the last two years for the campus paper, and interned last summer at the Philadelphia Inquirer, and just started his internship in New York officially last week with a series of orientation meetings. Then he got the call Friday to pinch-hit at the Mets game. "I'm aware of the history,'' he said. "I'm writing the game story of the first no-hitter in Mets history for the New York Times. But I was just writing. I was just working. I had a job to do, a story to tell. Tyler Kepner [Times' baseball columnist] helped me, and I've had a lot of help from other writers along the way. I'm just happy I was able to write a story I was proud of.''

Very good job, Tim. A short section: "I know how much this means to New York and to the New York Mets," Santana said, his shoulder heavily wrapped and his voice sounding humbled having accomplished what Tom Seaver had been so close to achieving. On the night that Beltran returned to New York, the evening belonged to Santana and the type of history the Mets had failed to write when Beltran was on the team.

 

...in public relations, I remember first meeting Tim at the NFL Scouting Combine. He was just a freshman and had opted to pass up on going on spring break to come to Indy in late February. With that dedication, I gave him one-on-one access to all of the Michigan guys in attendance during their media availabilities.

Kid has a bright future. Congrats, Tim.
