OT: current Nebraska OL rips athletic director

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I think Nebraska made a mistake. 4 division titles and this is the one year they DON'T lose 4 games under Pelini.

This'll go down as the worst decision Eichorst will make in his career. He don't care tho. Just biding his time til Wisconsin opens up.

At the end of the day Bo was the only one who gave a shit about us. You think Eichorst or Pearlman gave a shit? All they care about is $$$

— Matthew Finnin (@StepDaddyFinnin) November 30, 2014

I can guarantee not one of us has ever even had a conversation with either of them.

Armstrong-

Biggest mistake you ever made.... Bo was the best coach I've ever had and I'll always appreciate the things you taught me.

Suh-

The leadership issues at the University of Nebraska extend above the Head Football Coach's office.

The Stassen database hasn't been updated yet but Nebraska would have passed South Carolina, Florida and Texas this year. They're probably #15--I don't think anyone behind them passed them.

The only coaches that stayed at one school during that period and outperformed Pelini were

  1. Nick Saban
  2. Chris Petersen
  3. Bob Stoops
  4. Les Miles
  5. Gary Patterson
  6. Mark Dantonio

Nebraska is delusional. No talent comes from the state of Nebraska, and no one in their right mind would leave anywhere to go to Nebraska with any viable alternatives. MGoBlog has been trumpeting the idea that Nebraska would collapse for a while now due to recruiting woes, and now the only person standing in the way of that is gone.

We all judge now because of how michigan turned out since Carr left, but I remember when most of were calling for Carr to leave and he was a winning coach as well...hell he was better than Pelini. Was this a mistake? Probably since this year they are competing with some powerhouse schools, plus never take certain things for granted..look at michigan, perfect example.

People were calling for change because Carr couldn't beat Tressle. Some welcomed the change of the spread offense, because that was the only offense that Carr could not defend. Hind sight is 20/20, and no one expected the type of Defense Rich Rod was about to instill in the Big House. The debacle was started from the top down in that change, and needs to be corrected from the top down now. I'm just as worried as the next fan about what might become in the next several weeks, but sadly we all have to take a back seat, buckle up, and hope for the best.

On the surface, yes Pelini hasn't won as much as some would hope and yes, he has lost some high profile games lately - that Wisconsin beatdown and losing to a resurgent Minnesota program didn't help. But it shows that there has to be a lot else going on - since they have already fired a 9-3 coach in Solich. Thanks to the other posters for filling in the blanks.

Always love their father figure coach and never can see the big picture. They are emotionally attached and this is expected. This is why you never let them make decisions. Nebraska wants to win national titles.

I think the most damming tweet is from the player who says the AD is bidding his time until Wisconsin job opens up. That's speaks to a larger issue in the department that fans don't see. And I would like to believe that players speak to the AD and if they are saying they never spoken with him once again it speaks to larger issues.

Pelini knew he was a lame duck once Osborne was forced out as athletic director.

Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman has a huge ego and could never stand that Osborne was the face of the university -- specifically that people believed Osborne was the sole reason Nebraska was accepted to the B1G.

Perlman hired Eichorst (current AD) with a $1m salary, without any input from Osborne.

Eichorst has since expanded the Nebraska AD staff entirely with crony hires from Wisconsin.

Pelini knew he was going to be fired last year until Osborne got wind and pulled last minute strings with the Board of Regents.

Eichorst figured out that the remaining Osborne loyalists in the AD who were the source of the leak and he fired them (well-liked associate AD Paul Meyers).

This is simply a case of Perlman and Eichorst wanting "their guy"

Osborne came out of retirement in 2007 to fix the Callahan mess, and after being associated with the University for 40+ years, he has simply grown tired of saving the nincompoops at Nebraska from themselves.

The next coach at the University of Nebraska will have ZERO ties to Osborne.

Could this open the possibility of their current OC (a favorite around these parts) becoming part of our new head coach's staff? (As OC, not HC.)

Is Pellini our next coach?

Or

Does Nebraska snatch our third choice from us (seems we always whiff on our first two any more) just before we seal the deal?

Hindsight is 20/20.

He's been there 7 years and he hasn't won many big games. 9-17 against the top 25 isn't good.

I don't think it's too much to ask at Nebraska to get a conference title or two every once and a while.

Hopefully they have someone in mind that's good and able to unite everyone because that sounds a lot like Michigan's situation. It's really a shame when the higher ups are power hungry assholes and can't get out of the way.

Good question..they sure arent going to be happy. It wont come as a surprise so there probably wont be too much of a negative reaction as they probably knew it was coming. Its also interesting to compare how those players talk about their AD compared with how the players talked about Dave Brandon. For all of Brandon's faults, he seemed to be a strong supporter of the athletes.

I live in Neberaska and there are a lot of angry fans, which I don't understand. I've attended many husker games since Bo has been here and their D is god awful. The only reason the have a semi-decent offense is Abdullah. Bo isn't a good fit for Nebraska, although the players liked him. This was the right move if they want to get back to national relevancy.

"We weren't good enough in the games that mattered," athletic director Shawn Eichorst said in his meeting with the media that lasted nearly 35 minutes. "I didn't see that changing at the end of the day." Said Nebraska AD.

Michigan isn't good enough in games that matter AND games that don't matter. Yet Hoke is still our coach. Unbelievable. Michigan Athletic department needs to be cleansed of the dead weight good old boys who circle the wagons when their competence is questioned.

"We weren't good enough in the games that mattered."

I thought it was funny to see Randy Edsall interviewed after the Maryland win in Ann Arbor and he gushed about how excited he was that his team had won at Michigan and at Penn State this year.

Bo Pelini's teams accomplished that last year as well.  But at Nebraska, apparently those weren't even considered games that matter, and it gets you fired.

While the politics behind the move sounds the usual AD ego bullshit, I am not opposed to Big Ten teams taking more aggresive steps to improve their coaching staffs.  It seems like B1G teams have been slow to go after the sort of nationally elite coaches that seem to end up the SEC or the PAC-12, and that needs to change if the B1G is going to get out of the cellar.  If PSU, and now Michigan and Nebraska moves get them trending towards their historical prominence, all the better.
