Found out from a friend who had played with him at GVSU, and I unfortunately confirmed this info online. I know a few people were following this story and hoping for the best, and this is not the news anyone wanted to hear. He leaves behind a wife and 2 kids. RIP.
OT - Cullen Finnerty found dead
Wow, terrible loss. He was a man among boys out there. Thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, and former teammates and coaches.
That sucks. My condolences to the family and friends.
Incredibly sad. Given the absence of a "how" or "why", the last paragraph of the OP seems entirely inappropriate.
Not my place to speculate, even in the least, in a situation like this. It has been removed.
May the young man rest in peace.
But you're making an astonishing leap in connecting this event to any brain injury issues.
A few articles when his missing was first reported brought up the mental issues he was having, which his own family had suggested concussions were to blame (link). I did not pull this assumption out of thin air, nor was was any malice intended, but with the lack of info available, my comment was completely and utterly uncalled for and thus was removed.
The "leap" was already made in the media, and his family was quoted as saying that he had "many concussions" while playing football. It's not much of a "leap" for anyone who has been paying attention to research the last ten years.
God bless his family. Cullen had a newborn and a young boy with his wife. I really hope they can find some closure during this trying time but you just have to feel for his young wife :(
What a terrible tragedy. Prayers for his young family
Finnerty was so revered and respected at GVSU, in fact, that current GVSU players - per this entry - actually were aiding in the search to find him. Very sad news. Thoughts and condolences to his family.
This is fucking tragic!
This is a very sad story and sadly it is too common. A fly fishing guide I know told me a story similar to this when I asked for his advice about pontoon fishing in the river.
Wandering off into the woods after calling people to tell them you were I trouble and then being found dead with no signs of trauma? How is any of that common?
Maybe I should have been more clear because I didn't mean to say stories exactly like this one are common. I just meant to say stories of people getting lost in the woods while hiking/fishing/biking, etc. are far too common.
There would be a more obvious cause of death that was related to the elements like cold, drowning, lack of food or water, infection, falling from heights, etc. it doesn't sound like any of those were at play here.
I didn't know him personally, but by all accounts from those who did he was a hell of a man. The majority of my college career was spent watching him fearlessly fly around the field creating plays that had no business being completed. A hell of a leader and a competitor who made his teammates and university better.
So he didn't have any bullet wounds or anything? That is confusing.
I'm 30 as well and we t to gv the same time. Thoughts go out to his family
His father-in-law, Dan Brink, provided these details about the hours before he went missing:
"We had brats and hamburgers on Saturday and grilled chicken on Sunday," Brink said. "Everything was cool. It was a great weekend. We had a lot of smiles, a lot of laughs. There were no indications. There were no problems."
Brink said Finnerty decided to go fishing Sunday night.
"It was a nice night on Sunday and we thought, 'There is a nice stretch of the river,' and he got himself one of those boats, and he had been practicing on it. It's a riverboat, a raft.
"We were only a quarter mile from each other," Brink continued. "He ended up exactly where we told him to end up."
After Finnerty called his wife, he disappeared.
Enjoyed watching him play when I was at GV. My condolences to his family and friends.
RIP Mr. Finnerty. Really sad. G-d bless his family.
Condolences to his family and friends. R.I.P.
Very sad. My two cousins were part of the volunteer search team. Feel terrible for his family.
This is very weird. This has to be some kind of freak accident or health issue. The sheriff stated that weather conditions were survivable by a normal person. Crazy stuff.
I only recently met him. He was a really really great guy. Man that is not what I wanted to hear. I feel terrible for his family. wow.....
So terribly sad, inexplicable and frustrating. What a truly great leader on the field and a better man off. Thanks for all the great memories at GVSU and after. My thoughts and prayers go out to Cullen's family and hoping your beautiful wife and kids find peace someday. I know they will have an unlimited amount of support moving forward.
I don't understand ... so strange ... and sad.
I don't understand what the cause of death was. The USA Today article says "There were no apparent injuries and no signs of foul play". So confusing. Guess we'll have to wait until more details come out. So sad for his family.
To think that he went out to do something as simple and carefree as fishing and all of a sudden he disappears and now we hear this news. Really tragic event and prayers obviously go out for his family
Thoughts and prayers are with the Finnerty's. Went to high school with him at Brighton High. Good Kid. Were shocked here.....
Former college qb found dead: Bleacher Report says former NFL quarterback Cullen Finnerty was found dead in Lake County, Mich., on Tuesday evening. He was 30 years old. The discovery of Finnerty's body ended a two-day search by local law enforcement, family members and teammates. He went missing on Sunday evening, reportedly after a fishing trip on Baldwin River. Finnerty played for Notre Dame University and for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos.
he never played at ND...I think they ment to say ND coach Brian Kelly was his first coach at GVSU....
I was posting more on the absurdity of the News Media.
Coached against him and his younger brother. Tragic loss.
A short article on MLive states that autopsy findings may be available after 12 noon today. The best guess from the Lake County sherrif is that it is medica/health related.
EDIT: From WZZM 13 Grand Rapids website
"The Kent County Medical Examiner says Finnerty's death is not a homicide because there was no weapon used and no external damage to his body.
The examiner also ruled out major injury, including a fall, head trauma, broken neck, or heart attack.
Preliminary toxicology results could come as soon as Thursday."
I had an EKG as part of the freshman physical clearing me to play. I would think he would have as well. But it's possible if he didn't have/disclose family history of heart issues that they might skip that test, or perhaps they just didn't find it. This is a very sad story.
You'd think that the Offensive Coordinator at ND would be somewhat busy. No matter your team allegiance, I think think that speaks volumes to the type of man that Chuck Martin is and all the people that helped with the search.
Cullen meant a lot to the GVSU alumni. Grand Valley purposfully hosts games at night so that they don't interfere with Michigan games. I imagine it must have been quite an expereience watching Michigan during the day, and then Finnerty working his magic after. R.I.P. Cullen! I'll keep your family in my prayers.
Unfortunately I figured this would be the outcome. With today's technology of cell phones, credit cards, etc. once someone is truly missing, there is rarely a good outcome (a similar situation occurred w a good friend of mine when I was at U-M)
Sad to hear. Last I read they didn't know the cause of death, but still hopes and prayers out to his family.
Nytimes.com has a long story this morning on his disappearance and death: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/sports/ncaafootball/questions-linger-a...
