Any mgobloggers participating in the Crossfit Open this year? Just got done with the first workout which is always a humbling experience. Always wonder how well division 1 collegiate athletes would do.
OT - Crossfit Open

Division 1 athletes would handle cross fit with ease. A day at Barwis Methods is illuminating to say the least..
They aren't working. Seriously, as fit as they are, if they do a WOD, they go as hard as their fitness let's them and they will get their work in.
I've had two NFL players in a crossfit WOD, and their ass was kicked. It's because as fit as you are, you go harder and faster.
I do crossfit with two former starters at Utah and it still kicks their ass.
Start a thread about a topic, have people who disagree start shit. The mgoblog way.
This past month and I had no idea how tough it would be. Better workout in 30 mins then I could do in an hour or two by myself. I could not imagine joining any competition though as of yet. Maybe in 3 or 4 more months I can see the progress to think about it. But I highly encourage anybody who gets bored with the normal gym workout routine to check out a Crossfit. My buddy has been going for 4 months everyday and has still not repeated a same workout. That being said I'm sure these Wolverines would be in Beast Mode in a Crossfit Competition.
I agree with much of what you say except that doing Olympic lifts at a standard gym will often get you tossed out of that gym. Particularly if you're dropping the bar.
A good Crossfit gym doesn't have you doing the 100 reps thing all the time. The thing with Crossfit is that there are good gyms/instructors and bad ones. Hopefully you can figure out which one you're at quickly.
Yeah I do crossfit. Then I proceed to drive my 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo to the tanning salon. Anyone see where I put my Ed Hardy sunglasses?

Seriously though, Crossfit works. I've trained for about 15 years and found Crossfit about 2.5 ago. Since, I've gotten about 25% better at literally every serious lift out there.
Perhaps you were doing it wrong the first 12.5 years.
yeah, and how many times have you been injured? We've had a bunch of crossfitters come into our training facility because they burn out and injure themselves because there is no accountability from the trainers there. Not everybody should be doing the same workout, specialized workouts catered to your goals and deficiencies are the way to go. plu, those aren't real pullups, do it without swinging yourself
Before Corssfit, probably 1-2 times a year, but nothing serious. Since starting Crossfit, I haven't been hurt once. Just do the lift right and you won't get hurt. That said, it's hard physical activity. People get hurt running too.
And are done that way for a reason, not to make it easy.
Try doing fifty...try doing the butterfly pull ups...or better yet, muscle ups.
The workouts are tailored if they need to be (when the trainer knows what they're doing). Any high injury rates come from people not paying attention to form.
How many times have you actually done it?

A couple guys I work out with hit 170 here in the northeast. I'm only a year in, and decided to pass. How long have you been training?
4 years... as I have no shot of regionals but I think it's fun to do the open to gauge my progress from year to year. My plan is to make the games in the masters division which means I have like 14 years until I need to peak.
Masters is 40 now. So your 26? Anyway the programming for the open seems a little sketchy. 90 snatches while increasing weight? I guess I'd rather work on getting a 250lb snatch. I do enjoy our box and all the beneficial changes I've made in my life.
No, 31... couldn't remember when masters started. Guess I have to modify my timetable now.
I can't wait to hear about all the slap tears that result from the high rep snatches in the first "WOD".
I actually have a SLAP tear in my left shoulder from playing old man softball... doing Crossfit has helped me rehab and has kept me from surgery up to this point, knock on wood. You can hurt yourself doing just about anything and just like anything else their are people doing less than ideal Crossfit.
Wow, no love! I actually am a father of 6 (soon to 7), have no idea what Ed Hardy glasses are, and work out in gym shorts and a t-shirt. What do you all do that's so superior?

of weights (3x/wk) and running (3x/wk) with insanity about 2x/wk on running days. in the summer i supplement with swimming 3-5 miles in the lake, a mile a day. enjoy child #7, and pray for #8, those the blessings of life.
I've lifted for most of my adult life, and I served in the military, and I dig crossfit more than any other workout platform I've tried. Also, I'm in better shape than I've ever been in. I'm not sure what all the animosity is all about here, but people have some serious hatred of crossfit. Perhaps just don't do it then?
It gets a bad rep for cost, ingroup/outgroup mentality, aggressive advertising, etc. I say whatever gets you off the couch
I guess in my case I have the equipment in my garage, and don't pay the fee. Also, people who are doing the lifts wrong are just... doing the lifts wrong. That doesn't make the exercises bad for those of us who do them right.
Served in the military? Ever serve in an infantry unit? Ever serve in a forward area? Place your life in another mans hands, ask him to do the same with his?

crossfit is great for increasing respitory fitness. not so great for show muscles that everyone wants to get.
And I'm not military/firefighter..just love the workouts.
I'd love to see the critics do it once.
I think most of the dislike of Crossfit comes from the fact that it is so easy to open an affiliate and many don't teach proper form on Olympic lifts. If I walked into a gym for the first time and saw middle-aged guys (like me) cleaning 165 with bad form and no correction, I'd be skeptical too. But done properly, it's the best workout for me.
Busy mom. Not a musclehead, but I am a former athlete just trying to stay in shape and manage a busy schedule. I absolutely love it! Different gyms have different personalities, and I appreciate the trainers at keeping my form solid.

I feel confident up until the 135 snatch..going to be fun.. Our Gym owner got 204 which has not been posted yet. That's insane
What sort of timeframe is this in? This seems like a really high number of reps to be hititng consecutively in an explosive exercise. Are these from the floor or the hang?
17 minutes, the workout is...
40 burpees, 30 - 75# snatch
30 burpees, 30 - 135# snatch
20 burpees, 30 - 165# snatch
10 burpees, as many 210# snatch as you can get until time runs out.
Edit: the snatch is from the ground and can be power or squat.
The average person is not going much past 135# but a score of 204 means they snatched 210# 14 times which is ridiculous.
I just started crossfit last week but am a little skeptical of the instructor's planning. It seems like he changes the plan daily. Where can I go to find the WOD's if I want to do them on my own? Also, this is the first I've heard of the crossift open. Where do I go to find all information about these kinds of events?
Yeah... I would not pay to go to a gym like that. They post workouts everyday on CrossFit.com, I have my own equipment and follow that for the most part. Starting out though I'd encourage you to find a gym with a quality coach that can teach you the movements and help you identify flexibility issues that will be good for you to start addressing. Doesn't sound like that's what you're getting.

Squat down to the floor, kick your feet out while on your hands, do a push-up, back to squat position, jump up and hit a target 6" above your reach. That's one.
We called them up-downs in high school.
So I just had 100 reps Rx. Top at my box (Invictus in Holland) so far has been 150 reps.
Most people can't snatch 135 w/out some practice--especially when you are that tired. I would like to see video of the gym owner who says he hit 204. That is... Suspicious.
