OT - Copa America Day 2 - Costa Rica-Paraguay; Haiti-Peru; Brazil-Ecuador

Submitted by bacon1431 on
Costa Rica and Paraguay are tied 0-0 at halftime. They are both in the US' group, so if the current score holds, that's the best case scenario. Paraguay look the better team so far. Haiti and Peru will kick off at about 7:30pm ET USMNT Jozy Altiodre actually paid for the tournament to be televised in Haiti (which is where his family is from IIRC), as they didn't have a deal in place. This will be Haiti's biggest game in their history as they have never qualified for the World Cup before. This match is the first match in Group B. Brazil and Ecuador play the other match in Group B at about 10:00pm ET. Brazil doesn't have all their best players (saving some for the Olympics in August). Ecuador are a solid team and could feasibly win the group. Edit: Sorry about lack of paragraphs as I'm posting on Safari on my iPad.

First games in tournaments are usually low scoring as teams really don't want to lose their opener. Not surprised by the lack of goals. It'll start to pick up around Tuesday (though could be early as we've got teams like Mexico, Chile and Argentina) play Sunday and Monday

group stage, 1st game: 49 in 8 games

group stage, 2nd game: 45 in 8 games

group stage, 3rd game: 42 in 8 games

round of 16: 18 in 8 games

rest of tournament: 17 in 8 games (that's kind of amazing, when you remember that there was a 7:1 in there)

Should be 16 games in each round in the group stage. 32 teams, everybody plays.

But that's interesting. I've traditionally held this belief and I looked at previous World Cups after reading your post and it seems pretty even throughout each round (aside from the knockouts when you're presumably getting more even match ups)
