OT: Controversial tweet by the Lions Aaron Berry

Submitted by MGoCooper on

This is why letting players on Twitter after a game is a bad idea. Clearly frustrated, he said something that he will never live down in this city.

RT @LockDown717: Y'all can go back to being Broke & Miserable...now back to regular scheduled programming...

Lets be honest fans have a right to an opinion as you do with any product. Its pro sport so you have a right to expect the product (team) to give you a desired performance (wins) when you purchase tickets. Merch. Etc. if aaron barry doesnt like that then im sure a team will be glad to allow him to play for free. Our dbs are average at best.. We need a strong draft to overcome this exposed weakness asap! By the way fuck aaron berry!

That any defensive back on this team would have anything to say outside of , "Dear fans, I am so sorry for the putrid display last night" is laughable. That whole secondary is a joke.
I live in Ohio and watched Eric Wright play for the Browns for the past four years so to even have him on the field for the Lions shows what a terrible state our defensive backfield is in. Berry, obviously should not be talking. If there was still an NFL Europe, he would be filing papers for a passport right now.
If these guys draft anything other than DB's and LB's they should have their heads examined.

He earned his money so why should he hide it? It is PC to not bring gloat about your income, but its not like we don't know professional athletes make money, so people being appalled by this is kinda silly.

Edit/ I believe you when you say that you would be stupid enough to tell this to his face

Why wouldn't someone tell him that to his face? Are you insinuating that he would commit violence if someone said those things to his face? What kind of weak-minded individual would do that?

Even if he would commit violence over it, I say, "do it." Have you seen most of these guys when they get in fights? They have no idea what they're doing, then you sue them and you'd no longer be broke and miserable.

But let's not pretend that the Saints haven't done that to pretty much everyone in the league this year. Drew Brees did set the passing record this year. The secondary was bad, but at some point you have to give credit to how good that Saints offense really is, especially in the dome.

January 8th, 2012 at 1:58 AM ^

It's more on the Lions front 4 not being able to mount any pressure. Brees had all day to throw and when that happens you're in a world of hurt. The scondary can only do so much. Now that being said there were many plays where they were out of position and they also couldn't seem to tackle anyone.

I'm not saying the Lions D played well at all, but the Saints have been doing this to teams all year. At some point you have to give it up to them. This is one of the best offenses the NFL has ever seen. The Saints are just on a different level than the Lions at this point. Part of the problem not being able to get pressure too is that the Saints have one of the best offensive lines in the league. Let's face it, the Lions would have had to play a near perfect game to win. They definitely had a chance though, and who knows what could've happend if they capitalize on a couple of those missed opportunities. It is what it is. The Lions are a playoff team at this point, but not yet Superbowl contenders, and the Saints are.

You hit is spot on...Some delusional Lions fans actually thought they were the favorite...Did they not watch the Green Bay game? We are a year or two away from being true contenders.

Lions fans should be happy they got this far, not flooding the twitter of players that contributed (albeit ineffectively in Berrys case) to this playoff run.

But lets be real:

What are the differences between Detroit and New Orleans (and Green Bay/New England for that matter?)

None of those teams have great defenses. In fact, all three of their defenses rank below Detroit.

They have an advantage at QB, but Stafford is almost there. On his day, he can play with any of them. Also, we have the best receiver in football.

Our defensive front four is as talented as anyone. Last night they were outplayed by the Saints Oline and Cunningham did little to adjust. He should have just blitzed like a mad man since we weren't stopping Brees anyway and tried to force him into more turnovers.

In all honesty, we were an official's blown call and two easy interceptions away from this being down to the wire.

So many people making excuses like "Oh, we should be happy".... I'm happy Detroit's finally on the upswing, but acting like we couldn't have won this game is as dumb as thinking Michigan was going to go 7-5 this year.

IFs and couldas won't change the final score, and as UM fans know, that's all that matters....they owned our defense, just like Green Bay did before us...Our vaunted D-line is a sieve against the run and incossistent against the pass. We need a piece or two to give us some semblance of a good pass defense and get back a healthy rb. Then, we can win this game.

And the Saints D has been owned and Green Bay's has been owned and New England's D has been owned all season.

Yet those are the three best teams in the league?

Why?

Because they make two picks and their offenses are so good in makes up for a lack of defensive talent.

Once again, I'm not saying Detroit is quite there, but people on here act like this game was a foregone conclusion when two or three key plays could have swung it our way.

And to act lke you need those things you described doesn't make sense given the examples I've cited.

Between Detroit and the likes of NO/NE/GB you ask? The difference is that GB and NO have major weapons for their QB's all over the field. The WR cores are so far above the Lions, it's not even close. With Best out, the only real weapon the Lions have is Megatron. Pettigrew is a pretty good tight end, but is not in the ballpark of Graham or Finley, and besides Megatron, both receiving cores blow the Lions outta the water. As far as the Pats are concerned, people can say what they want, and I'm not saying this because I'm a homer, but New England has the best quarterback we have seen in the last twenty years on their team. Brady is unreal, and Belicheck is one of the greatest coaches ever. Just as I said on here in a recent post, the Lions are a playoff team right now, not a Superbowl contender like these other teams. Stafford is super young, and looks good already. I'm not saying they won't become Superbowl contenders, but they are still a few pieces away before they get there.

The Saints have so many weapons that they force teams into making bad decisions. I'm not saying whether you have or haven't, but watching the Saints this year, this happens against most teams they play. The Saints (particularlry Payton) are extremely good at out-schemeing people, and they have made people look stupid all year. I just think Lions fans have to come to a realization that it was a very slim chance that the Lions could go into New Orleans and win. I am by no means defending the Lions secondary, but I think in this case it is more about what New Orleans does, than how bad the Lions played. The Lions offense is awesome, and it still isn't near the level of New Orleans'. That offense is literally one of the best in the history of the league. Brees broke the all-time passing record, and they still had a top ten NFL rushing offense as well. That is insane. The Lions have to get better in the secondary no doubt, but very few teams are capable of slowing down New Orleans at this point.

People said the same thing about Young....That turned out well. I think this offseason, they need to cut Vandenbosch or allow avril to go (I believe he is a free agent), and sign some veterans in the secondary...I still think Fairley will really be great next year as this year he was hampered all season by that foot injury.

SalvatoreQuattro

You need two outside rushers at DE. Why in God's name would let Avril go? Vandenbosch is a situational player at this point. If anything the Lions needs another end who can rush the passer.

The Lions need all sorts of help on defense that much is obvious. CB, LB, and DE are needs.

Obviously not cool, but if fans were all over him roasting him for dropping those picks, I'd be understandably upset. He played a strong game against the New Orleans offense. Sure, the picks would've been nice, but you can't pin the game on those plays.

He's going to be a hell of a player, I hope Detroit doesn't look too unfavorably on him for this.

I don't know, that first pick could have really driven the dagger in deep the way our offense was clicking at the time. Can of course never put a game on one play or player though. The fumble/incomplete pass/dead ball touchdown would have had a similar effect. I''m with you on the tweet though. Really stupid but if you continue to poke the guy when I'm sure he's already beating himself up about it what do you expect him to say? Not everyone can have the poise of a Brady Hoke.

Well...that was stupid. I hate when players make comments like this. Twitter is great because you really can see the raw emotion form players and people, etc. but people really need to learn when and when NOT to tweet.

Steve Lorenz

Another reason why I love college sports over professional sports. I don't feel like you'd get a comment like that from a college kid. Not that they're immune to saying stupid stuff, but that's just professional arrogance at its worst. I don't care if you just lost or what.

Read "3 & Out" - college players actually do express frustration at fans and students ("normies") for not understanding the work that players put into the game. And I'm sure if we look hard enough we can find an example of an ill-advised tweet coming from a college player.

StephenRKass

January 8th, 2012 at 12:48 AM ^

Well, he can actually tweet this cause he did. But he shouldn't have. You can't let fans taunt you into stupidity nor let them get under your skin.

And yes, you need to make the interceptions. That (among many things) cost Detroit the game. Missed opportunities (and seized ones) make all the difference in the world. Exhibit A: the Sugar Bowl last week, where Michigan seized opportunities, and VaTech let them slip from their hands.

Aaron Berry played terrible as did the entire Detroit defense. What he did was ignorant and obviously done out of anger and frustration. He will regret that message soon enough if he doesn't already.

However, I think it is hilarious when fans start talking shit to players. You are a fan, you are obviously not good at sports or you would be out there. You are watching grown men play a game that has no bearing on your life at all. People need to take a step back and effing relax. Do not send tweets to a player because you are mad they played like shit. It is pathetic. Grow the fuck up.
