OT: Congress interested in NCAA dealings

Submitted by GoWings2008 on

This topic has been discussed on this blog for quite a while and even a post yesterday about the B1G president's statement on a reform package to address student-athlete support.  I found this story, sorry for the source, on a US Representative (Tony Cardenas, D-Calif) who is involved in getting answers from the NCAA and "that lawmakers are pressing for action to address perceived inequities."  Some very familiar sounding information from some student-athletes in there, stuff we attribute to SEC schools, but hopefully this will lead to some significant attention on the necessary reform.  Link:  http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/11128414/congress-hikes-scrutiny-ncaa-actions.  A lot of quotes from Jim Delany in there as well.

Politicians see an organization with money to burn in midst of a controversial subject and see an opportunity to get their hands on the money. I highly doubt this is for any sort of good or ethical reason.

They already have the power to tax this stuff and largely don't. Besides, we're talking about large sums of money in regular person terms, but to the federal government a couple of hundred million dollars is pocket change.

/s will not go well here.

since congress is already badly investigating several 'issues' , what the hell is one more that they can screw up....

Just like the baseball scandal, congress needs to mind their business. The government is a mess, perhaps they should worry about that first and not amateur athletics.

If the NCAA and its member institutions didn't receive tax exempt status for all of their activities including sports, and billions of dollars in Federal direct grants and aid, then I might agree with you, it's not "their business" (ironic choice of words). But, they feed at the Federal trough, and unlike you or I they are largely tax-exempt, so yeah, it's Congress' business.

I think this is much different than the baseball situation. This essentially involves the regulation of labor and industry which is definitely Congress' business, as it has been for much of our history. Doesn't mean they will get it right, but it is their business.

my athletic association composed of institutions that receive federal funding allocated by Congress and have been exempted by Congress from numerous federal laws including from antitrust statutes!

Who cares. The shear majority only care about filing up their reelection coffers from lobbyists than the actual and urgent needs of their constituents.

fuck congress.

If I had it my way we would have immediate election reforms (including the repeal of Citizens United) and dissolution of all current representatives and senators, with an immediate elections to refill those seats.
