OT: Comcast vs U-Verse

UVerse sounds really cool because of that "DVR anywhere in the house" functionality. I almost switched to them from DirecTV but then I saw that their HD service sucks donkey balls (relatively speaking).

i would get u-verse in a second. but i live in the land where i can only get comcast, dish net or direct tv. my in-laws and on of my friends have u-verse and they love it. the best part is being able to use the DVR in one room and watch it on any other tv in the house.

I don't have U-Verse, but I have heard that only one box can watch an HD channel at a time. You might want to check that out before making your decision. On the flip side, other than the HD issue, I heard that the U-Verse service is awesome... and you don't have to deal with Comcast's shitty customer service (which I have and hate).

We love U-Verse. I have not seen any issues with the HD quality. The only minor complaint is that while you can watch the DVR on any of your TV's, you can only pause or rewind live TV on the primary TV. So choose wisely. Also, we saved over $50 per month switching our phone and internet service to them versus doing it separately.

I'm not crazy about either, though if I had to choose and price was equal I'd choose Comcast despite their relatively poor customer service. Since you're interested in U-Verse, here are my pros and cons: Pros: -the dvr, which lets you watch a taped program from any TV and tape 3-4 shows at once -a bit more choice of High Def vs. Comcast, at least in my area -since I'm an ATT cell customer, consolidating all bills on one -generally better customer service, although they make it hard to speak to a live person -generally cheaper, depending on package Cons: -until recently in my area, and still true in some others, you can only record a program or delete a program from the "main" DVR -same holds true for watching more than one program at a time on different TV's: if two TV's are tuned to HD, only one can watch HD (they've recently fixed this in Detroit but some areas still have this issue) -with the pros above, you'd think that U-verse would have superior technology, but not true. The box has fewer custom options than with Comcast, and the HD picture is subjectively worse than Comcast's (IMO, but others on video boards have said the same) -the internet speed is slower than Comcast, as U-verse's top speed is not available in Detroit, and their next highest is slower than Comcast (although to be fair, I haven't noticed a great difference) Having said all that, if you are considering uverse 100, some of these issues won't apply to you, good luck

I switched already. The most expensive uverse package (450) was cheaper to me than the just slightly above basic package I had with Comcast. Plus with the 450 you get the sports package which gives you a ton of FSN regional channels from all over the country. That will be a major benefit during college football and baseball seasons.

I use a local service in SE Michigan that I'm hesitant to name, for uh... personal safety reasons. I really like it though. It's just simple cable and internet, but good prices, good service, and easy to work with.

I know that sounds like a bit of a stretch but I record a lot of TV and many times shows are on at the same time on different channels and for some stupid reason it won't let you watch a previously recorded show from the HD while it records two others. You might also look into Dish - they have an HD DVR that allows you to access the DVR on a standard def TV elsewhere in the house - if you only have two TV and one of them is standard I'd say that's certainly the way to go. Also, I live in Texas, the land of ridiculous thunderstorms and hail and my DirecTV has only gone out once or twice in 3 years *knock on wood* and my parents in southern Ohio haven't had theirs go out (again, *knock on wood*) since they upgraded to HD last Christmas. One last thing - sometimes I'd notice some pixelation on U-Verse - they may have cleaned this up however so maybe just something to check with others in the area about.

I've got the full blown UVerse U 400. Love it. I pay what I used to pay for Comcast except I get about 80 more channels, including the premiums that I didn't have. And I haven't had any HD issues like the person earlier mentioned.

(U200) has been great for me. I was a long-time comcast guy (never had a dish), but switched about a year ago. I have the bundle with home phone (wife insists) and internet. Channels, HD content, etc. are comparable between the two. For me, getting a DVR system for less than I was paying for comcast without one was the kicker. Also, FWIW, I have zero internet connection issues, whereas with comcast I had them constantly.

I will never have a dish because I've gotten screwed so many times in rainy weather. Most recently, while at a bar for the Michigan-Miami game last year. I'm in northern Virginia, and the DirecTV went out right before the game because of light rain. Quickly drove home to watch it on cable. Happens to my parents' DirecTV all the time also. I'm a satellite engineer, and still will not support dishes for TV. I have Comcast, and am very happy with the sports package. I made a phone call on a saturday morning, and not two minutes after initiating the call, I had BTN, ESPNU, Fox Sports, NHL/NBA/NFL networks, and more playing on my tv, for just $5 a month. All in HD. Totally worth it.

The way it works with what you can watch is that it has 4 lines coming into your home. One line is used for SD and two is used for HD, so that means you can watch four seperate SD channels or 2 HD channels at the same time. I don't know how the person earlier can watch 4 HD channels....that doesn't happen for all. Also, I don't know what internet speed they offer in MI but in IN I can get 6MBps easily and can upgrade I believe to 10MBps which is just as fast as Comcast. There are a ton more HD channels especially when it comes to movie channels where Comcast has just like HBOHD U-Verse has 13 HD HBO stations and that applies with all the rest like Cinemax, Starz and whatnot. I've had it about 18 months and my bill has never fluctuated even though I'm outside of my one year contract and I have never lost cable or internet service even for a minute.

I have U-verse. It's great because there's no contract, no setup fees. The only thing is that I found the info on the packages confusing because the 100 has no DVR, but the 200 has free DVR. Both have BTN though.

My parents have U-verse... their only complaint is that the picture occasionally freezes for no reason around 2-3 am even when the TV is off and something is just being recorded. They have the U-200 package and HBO.

as a fellow resident of GR, U-Verse is the best service in the area.

and am quite happy with it. The picture quality is excellent, even in standard def and spread over my 67" Samsung. I think their HD selection is on par or better than most, and the onscreen menus and guides are pretty intuitive. The only issue I OCCASIONALLY see is the same as stated above, where the internet service will go out ealry AM (1 or 2) and stay out for a bit. This of course means no internet or TV, since it is all fed through the router. Other than that, I am glad I went with AT&T. It is much better than the WOW service my parents get, and I have never been a fan of Comcast. On a side note, I'm curious to see how AT&T handles live NFL games on the NFL Network. Obviously, with the U-450 I get the NFL Net, but my parents also get NFL Net with WOW, and whenever there is a live NFL game aired, the WOW service doesn't carry it and instead has some old NFL Films crap on. Something to do with WOW not willing to pay an additional fee to the NFL to carry live games. I'm hoping this is not the case with AT&T.
