OT - Columnist compares Vancouver Olympics with Berlin Olympics
After reading this it made me wish you had to obtain a license to be apportioned space in a newspaper.
Deadspin* does a good job of breaking down what an absolute joke the column is.
One quote from it:
I didn't attend the '36 Olympics, but I've seen the pictures. Swastikas everywhere. No political reference is meant, just an Olympic one. What on earth were the Canadians thinking? An Olympic host is supposed to welcome the world. This one was too busy being (their word) "patriotic." "Now you know us, eh?" chief organizer Furlong said. We thought we did two weeks ago. Now, I'm wondering if Canadians can even recognize themselves. Nice party. But so 1936.* I know, I know, but the enemy of your enemy ... blah blah.
if he is comparing the 36 Olympics with the Vancouver Olympics. What a douche.
Deadspin thinks it's crazy? It's either very accurate or ignorant beyond comprehension. I'm going to side with it not being accurate.
I am pretty tired of the blowback, particularly from Deadspin and other gossip blogs, about how bad these Olympics were. Look, there were some great moments in these Olympics, like any other Olympics. Yes, the television coverage left something to be desired. But the highlights were televised, and the hockey finals was the most intense Olympic event I've ever seen.
But the proliferation of media has meant that in these Olympics, every embarrassing moment was captured on video or in a photograph. This could be said for *any Olympics ever.* Or any sporting event.
re-read the original post. ... Carefully.
No, I get it. Like the OP, Deadspin appears to be criticizing an article that made a grossly off-base comparison. Fair enough. My point is that 90% of Deadspin's Olympic coverage, as well as the embedded offending article, are variations on the same theme: worst Olympics ever. I'm not buying that.
but it seemed to me that Deadspin was more critical of NBC than of the Olympics.
Perhaps that's true, but they did publish a post entitled "Worst Olympics Ever," even if much of it dealt with criticisms of NBC's coverage.

The difference between the two was simple. 1 there were no swaztikas flying over head and 2 nobody was saluting Hitler. Pretty simple if you ask me.......
Nice party, but so 1936.The athletes and officials at the Berlin Olympics went through 100,000 condoms in under two weeks as well? I never knew the 1930's were so bawdy.
...complaining about Canadians exhibiting patriotism. Give me a break. Asshattery at its worst. Comparing the Maple Leaf and the Swastika is like comparing Dudley Do-Right and Hannibal Lecter.
Methinks this is the response of someone who doesn't quite understand the purpose of the opening/closing ceremonies and is mistaking highlighting cultural aspects of the host country with over-exuberant nationalism. That guy is going to love Sochi 2014, then...
...will be a sight to see. I think it will be fascinating to see how the Russians portray themselves. The lines between Russian nationalism and Soviet state worship aren't that bright, but I don't think there will be a ton of Marxian imagery.
Some Ivan Drago would be cool, though.
Wow this guy is nuts. It is a stretch to correlate a strong sense of patriotism to Fascism. Hopefully he never goes to a Michigan football game. What would he think about a "Maize Out."
Makes perfect sense to me. Canada has national health care, which makes them a dictatorial fascist state employing death panels to weed out the elderly.
...that may be imperceptible to some.
Prior sarcasm acknowledged.
Still, don't need death panels when you've got 8 month waits for brain tumor MRIs.
Damn, you found us out. Weeding out the elderly is a true Canadian past-time.
