OT: Colin Cowherd sticks both feet in his mouth at once

Submitted by Bambi on

Our favorite ESPN personality and radio host Colin Cowherd is under fire for comments he made about Dominicans and baseball.

Deadspin has the 15 second clip here but for those who don't want to listen, Cowherd's damning quote is:

"I've never just bought into [the idea that] 'baseball's just too complex.' Really? A third of the sport is from the Dominican Republic."

This Yahoo article has the full quote where he follows up the first quote by saying:

"The Dominican Republic has not been known in my lifetime as having world class academic abilities."

Apparently Cowherd has no problems burning bridges and offending anyone in his way as he goes from ESPN to Fox Sports. He's been called out by multiple Domincan players including Joey Bautista on twitter.

Now more than ever I'd rather be on the Harbaugh side of the Harbuagh Cowherd debate. To put it nicely, Cowherd is an asshat.

Sounds like Cowherd is erecting a straw man and then setting himself on fire when he tries to put a lighted match to it.

Both watching and playing.

The statistics lack of salary caps and trying to compete off a farm team and 1/4 the aggregate of the big boys makes it complicated or just retarded your call.

It seems like it's just a spreadsheet and the entire season could be simulated and no indivudual game or month matters.  Can't get into anything but maybe the world series or AL/NL races.

Cowherd's whole ESPN career has been him race-baiting, and then talking himself out of it. I guess he just said "fuck it" on his way out...

I see two problems with the Cowherd for breakfast diet. 1. I don't know that pieces of shit are good for you. 2. If Harbaugh is, ahem, eating him, wouldn't that make Colin fucking Cowherd the breakfast of Champions? That cannot be right and John_Mcenroe - You cannot be serious

Cowherd just posted this on Twitter. Apparently trying to make amends with our coach:

@ESPN_Colin: Absolutely love what @CoachJim4UM does w his Twitter when he notes GPA and academic success along w pix of kids. Very cool.

I hate defending the guy but a 15 second clip is taking this way out of context. I was listening (watching on ESPNU). It had to do with sports writers making up stories for click bait. He referenced how sports writers insinuate that baseball is too "complex" when most writers could manage a baseball game but none of them could draw up a Belichick play (which I agree with). His reference to a demographic may have been dumb but his premiss is true, you want to play in the NFL you absolutely have to attend college. You want to play in MLB, not so much.

Even if his premise is correct (which it's not), that has nothing to do with the fact that he's an asshat. So what if you think the point he's making is correct? If he's making ignorant comments along the way, he's still an asshat.

Also, that quote wasn't taken out of context. Everything you mentioned about his quote was put in the OP. Out of context would be if Cowherd had said "I hate when people say Dominicans can't understand baseball" and I posted somethign saying "Cowherd said Domincans can't understand baseball.

Here, I posted the 15 second clip and the full quote of his. He was making a point, sure, but in his point he added an unnecessary ignorant and hateful comment. There is no way to take that out of context. He implied that Dominicans as a people are stupid. That is not out of context. That is in context. You just have no idea what that phrase means.

Also the fact that you think NFL players "attending" college means they're smarter than MLB players is laughable. Look at Cam Newton or Jameis Winston or Riley Cooper. You think that they're smarter than the average MLB player?

Most NFL players don't learn anything in college, and especially not anything useful to football. Most of these guys general studies majors taking Rocks for Jocks 101, getting passed all the way without doing any work. The fact that they went to college does not mean they're smarter than MLB players, it just means that they're good at football.

I'm confused, so it's 'ignorant and hateful' for CC to give his opinion (which he gets paid very handsomly for) that, generally, people from the DR are less educacted than people who have attended universities in the United States.  But it is okay for you to give your opinion  that 'most nfl players don't learn anything in college...'?  Seems like this is an angry conversation between a pot and a kettle.

I don't see how him getting paid for an opinion matters here. It's an opinion. Whether he gets paid or right has no bearing on the validity of it.

"people from the DR are less educacted than people who have attended universities in the United States."

Except that's not all he said. He said that because Dominicans make up a third of baseball's population, that means baseball is not a complex sport. So if Dominicans can understand something, it can't be complex. Because Dominicans are stupid. (Also this past year less than 30% of baseball was Latino, let alone Dominican, so either Cowherd is an idiot who doesn't know his facts, a racist who thinks Latino=Dominican, or both.)

If he had just said "generally, people from the DR are less educacted than people who have attended universities in the United States" then sure, there would be no issue. But that's clearly not all he said. He implied that Dominicans as a whole are stupider than the average human being. That is an ignorant comment.

"But it is okay for you to give your opinion  that 'most nfl players don't learn anything in college...'"

I never said it wasn't okay for him to give his opinion. I'm just saying that his opinion is stupid, ignorant, and hateful because he implies that a group of people are stupid based solely on their ethnicity. That is the definition of ignorant.

If you can't tell the difference between saying that Dominicans as a whole are stupider than the average human and NFL players generally (meaning not all the time) sisn't care about their education in college, you have issues beyond this conversation.

Especially since there are many documented cases of college athletes not doing work in college.

And keep in mind, this is just info about college players. If you look at NFL players, guys who may have known they were ticketed for the NFL since they stepped on campus, I'm sure the information is even more damning.

"Seems like this is an angry conversation between a pot and a kettle."

No, this is just you trying to compare apples and oranges.

Also, keep in mind Cowherd's entire argument is stupid to begin with. He's saying because more NFL players went to college than baseball players, that football is a more complex sport than baseball. This ignores the fact that baseball has a separate minor league system which means players don't need to go to college whereas college football is the minor leagues for the NFL, they have no other option.

Also, if Cowherd is right and the NFL is more complex, then shouldn't all prospective NFL players get Ph.D.'s before going pro? Because if college degree matters, than why not get the highest degree level possible? Also, if he's right, then no high school student should be able to understand football, because clearly you need a college degree since it's so complex.

His point is analagous to saying a CVS that serves mostly doctors is a smarter store than a Walgreens that serves mainly coal miners, ignoring the fact that the CVS is next to a hospital and the Walgreens is next to a coal mine.

football is much more complex than baseball. cowherd came off as a bigot making his point but it is no less valid. your rant came off as a defense if baseball which is fine but it is clearly less complex than football.
