Special Teams (bad special teams at that) straight to college head coach? I guess maybe they're hoping for a John Harbaugh type hire? This one is a head scratcher.

You have Annese, an offensive innovator who has been successful at every stop, just down the road and instead you hire a career special team's coach?  I don't really undertand the thinking behind that one.

I grew up in MP going to CMU games. We used to sit on the grass hill when it was the north west corner of the stadium and the Chips were winning the MAC and going to The Raisin Bowl. MP will put butts in seats if they put an exciting team on the field and they just struck out. Was Annese even interviewed or offered?

How will this affect their LOI's? I can't imagine that not having a head coach helped in recruiting, but did Central get any LOI's that they can now hold guys to?

This guy was my coach for one year In HS (1987-yikes)...his first ever coaching gig when he was playing at cmu. As a person, he was a great guy, player's coach and took me from being a nobody to a starter / hon mention all conference type before I was done playing. Shifty wr in his own day, coached wrs. He was brought in by cmu's old offensive coordinator (Petty) whose son played on my team. Don't know what type of head coach Bonomego will make but he is personable, was in the nfl and they didn't lose any recruits on signing day. I think he maintained his connections with the university and they finally are trying the "alum" thing to see if he will stick around longer since they've been burnt quite a bit by the coaching carousel in recent years. Big turnaround job ahead of him though and big leap from current role. Wish him the best of luck.

Man I feel old.

Coach Bonamego was my special teams coach at Army in the late 90s. Bob Sutton, John Milligan, and Bill Sheridan were a few of the other coaches there at the time. I don't recall thinking back then that he was destined to be a head coach one day, but I found him to be competent and fair. He certainly had the requisite knowledge and aptitude to perform in that role. I also thought he was very personable and energetic. I have no idea how he'll do at CMU, but I certainly wish him the best of luck.

Brian Kelly, Butch Jones and Dan Enos were supposed to be hires that had the in-state roadmap for recuiting.  I have now idea who this guy is.  Enos set the bar pretty low, so he has that going for him.

I did some coverage on this for Ferris State's newspaper and Tony told me that he was never even in contact with CMU. Personally, I think he would have been a great hire for them, and there were a million reasons for Annese to go if he was offered the job, but I'm glad he's sticking around here.
