OT: Clowney sits. Spurrier calls him out.

Clowney told his coaches last minute that he was too sore to play.  Spurrier's response - If Clowney "wants to play, we will welcome him to come play for the team if he wants," Spurrier said. "But he if doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to play. Simple as that."

I agree with you and have

I agree with you and have never been a fan of Spurrier but I think if he is saying what he is saying he is done dealing with a Diva.  NFL GM's must be shaking their heads right now.

You don't call your players

You don't call your players out in the media.  It is embarrassing for the players, tears lockerooms apart, and creats negative publicity.

Your top player, who is supposedly the best

Your top player, who is supposedly the best overall player in the country has drastically regressed this year and seems to not care. How much as the ol' ball coach tried to unsuccessfully motivate Clowney out of the media's watchful eye? Maybe this is Spurrier's last ditch effort to light a fire in him. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Spurrier knows what he's doing a lot more than we do.

I know ESPN loves chirping about him, BUT

have you actually watched him play?   He plays like the Vincent Smith hit is all he will ever need to do to be great because people loved that singular play.  He is a beast, but he has regressed and no one can truthfully say otherwise.

Totally disagree

IMO he has never been close to the best in college football. All media hype because of one missed block in bowl game last year. He's good, but not that good.

What if the media has

incessantly asked you about the player? And until now you have stood up for the player. And the player has continued to play only when he feels like it?

Also, I would assume there are already locker room problems. The team must be upset with Clowny's behavior. A for the coach to publically simply make a statement of truth, instead of cover it up after five weeks of football, must reassure guys who want to play and don't get the noteriety that Clowny gets. There are 7 other DEs on roster who have seen and heard all of this.

Like all things, there are exceptions and this is one.

Clowney deserved to be called out. He clearly has regressed, is looking to remain healthy for the draft, and is not giving full effort for SC--precisely the definition of a bad teammate

I agree, but I also figure

I agree, but I also figure Spurrier doesn't much care at this point.  Clowney has been a bit of a disappointment so far this year, and Spurrier knows he is gonea fter this year while OBC will be sticking around.  Might as well reestablish your position.

I find him humorous. During his time at Florida he would freely insult other SEC schools. Please feel free to google some great Spurrier quotes.

Favorite of all time...

I think Spurrier's best all-time quote was "You can't spell Citrus without UT."

Sadly for UT, their program is now at a point where they would be ecstatic to go to what is now the Capital One Bowl this year.

How is Spurrier calling him

How is Spurrier calling him out?  He answered the question in a coach manner and was pretty un-douchey, as the kidz say, about it.  I'd be pretty pissed about dealing with this kind of sh*t myself, as a coach, as I'm sure the South Carolina defense and overall team is I'd wager.

Yeah I guess I didn't really

Yeah I guess I didn't really mean to ask "How is he calling him out" as yes he is, but more a question to the others above as to why they think he was doing it in a bad way.  I think there's different ways to call out people/players.  Essentially, I thought how Spurrier handled this wasn't bad/"douchey" at all; could have been a "bad call out" but really wasn't, he simply stated how it was.

Good for you.  I don't.

Good for you.  I don't.  Sorry I bothered to explain myself.

FWIW, it's classless to let your team down.  But he's only 20 years old, regardless that he's worthy of making millions as we speak, so yeah it's classless for Spurrier to have laid out the truth in a read-between-the lines manner.

I think you are trying too hard.

Spurrier said Clowney didn't play because he didn't WANT to. Not that that he was hurt, not that he was too sore, but because he didn't WANT to play. You call that the truth. It's Spurrier's opinion. He's entitled to his opinion, maybe he's even right, but there was absolutely nothing "read between the lines" in Spurrier's statement. It's classless at best. Spurrier is using his media access to publicly attack a player's character. What's going to happen if Clowney responds in kind?

remember Clowney

had a front row seat to Lattimore's injury and how it affected his draft status ie $$$$$$$

Clowney's been dogging it all year, looks like a classic case of just trying to make it to the NFL.   Spurrier's right to call him out and I imagine he has far more evidence of Clowney dogging it than anyone else.

No kidding

If he quits on his team in college, what's he going to do when he's stuck on a 4-12 team in the NFL? Or when he has his big contract and doesn't have anything to work for?

I can't pretend to know

I can't pretend to know whether a kid's injury is real or not. However, I don't think the League would have punished Clowney much at all if he had honestly said, "It is not worth the risk to my financial futrure. I'm sitting the year out. If he is somehow being dishonest about it, I think that will hurt him a lot more." Could be wrong, but I don't think so.

I call it you blowing things well out of proportion and crossing a line that should never be crossed. I think Jadeveon, other football players, and other people who can trace their roots back to slaves (like me) would say you are very confused as to what constitutes slavery.

Does the current system use players for their gain without giving each player an equal cut? Sure. So do many things. Do you make an equal cut at you job of what the company makes? Is there a higher position you are qualified for, but you have to wait your turn until the oppurtunity comes up to get it? Yeah, well that's life. These young men are getting an education from some of the best institutions in the country. They are getting to travel the country. They get free meals and room and board and the oppurtinity to one day make millions if they prove themselves. This is very far from slavery, and you are a very irrational confused man. Work on more appropriate analogies.

There are other places he could play professionally if he wanted to forgo college. You are making the false assumption that the NFL is the only gig. If you are saying that he has a right to get a job immediately at the very top of his profession out of high school despite the qualifications set down by that particular employer, that is a silly argument.

The NFL has determined that a certain amount of time post-high school is a qualification for employment in their organization. So? Employers make these determinations all the time, and they have the right to do that.

He can go play in Canada or elsewhere if he wants employment. He doesn't

To have the right to the specific job with the specific employer he chooses. None of us do.

The fact you are complacent to ignore my main concern with your initial statement and thus stand by the fact you openly and unrepentingly compared college football to slavery shows what a loose grip you have on reality. Under the false guise of a concerned critical thinker, what a joke of a shallow minded man you seem to be.

I do hope there is truly something a lot more respectable on the other side of that keyboard than the MGoPersona you've created.

Very, very little of slavery relates to college

Very, very little of slavery relates to college football, but enough so that in your little mind, you feel you can defend your decision to bring it up. Again, you continue to enlighten me about yourself with each ignorant word you type. Your inability to use an appropriate, non-extreme example to prove your point shows that you are much more aroused by the thought of stirring the pot than you are interested in truly convincing others to understand how you feel about this topic.

I have nothing more to say to you. If you wish to write something else on this mini thread and pretend as if I still care and you are getting in the final word, by all means...

P.S. - To your other post, I worship taking care of my little 1 month old baby girl, the same reason I'm awake right now. Fuck football, because I couldn't care less about anything but her anymore. I take it you worship the sound of your voice?

I agree that this is not slavery but some of the points you make were similar to those made by people who defend slavery. slave owners would tell slaves that you are getting a place to live for your work in the fields and the home. Some even got educated by the slave masters children. And there were slaves who loved he system. The difference was in the physical treatment of slaves. Football players are not treated in like that and if they were the culprits would be in jail.

The rest of the thread apparently has been pulled

but thank you for making this statement. You said it very clearly from a position of moral authority.

College football has gotten way off the edcuational mission, and bloated department budgets, coaches and AD salaries, and gilded facilties. The simple fact is, a D1 scholarship to play football cannot be akin to slavery. Why would there be thousands of high school atheletes competing to get those scholarships otherwise.

After my sophomore year I had a co-op job and a full time offer to pay me a large sum ..... When I graduated. It was not for millions, but I still had to go back and pay for two more years of school. Nobody will feel sorry for the NFL team if they pay him millions and he does nothing and I certainly think it is in the NFL rights to require three years of experience before hiring someone.

I agree with much of the point you are trying to make. But you are doing a very bad job of making that point. Schools/conferences/broadcast networks/bowl official hacks/the NCAA are all making obscene amounts of money on the labor of players. It is a very reasonable position to believe that the labor, which is the entire source of that revenue, should receive a greater share. But referring to people who don't agree with you as "Wal Mart" is not the pinnacle of effective debate technique.

Bad analogy

The guy is not being forced to play football. He has the choice to not play at all, or to just sit this year out and enter the draft. Now,those choices have consequences, both good and bad. But the choice is his to make. (Including whether he is too injured to play which may be all that this is.)

If he wants NFL money, he has to make his choices within the rules of the system. You will find a lot of folks who agree that those rules aren't always fair. They may even be exploitive to an extent. However, it is not comparable to slavery.

No one

Forces them into receiving a college education free of charge, which is worth close to 100k over 4 years. I know a lot of people who don't make that much money working in the real world.

If they worried so much about their bodies, they should just sit out for three years and patiently wait for the draft.

The NFL is exploiting a system, sure, but these young men are NOT slaves. They can walk away from the game at any moment. That is a horrible comparison.

If he wants to protect

If he wants to protect himself for the NFL, fine. Then he should leave the team. The expectation when you're on a team is that you play, whether you have a potential NFL career or not, whether there is a growing sense that college players should get some sort of compensation, or not. His education is his form of payment, as the rules currently stand. He may not appreciate that, as some players see college as purely a stepping stone to professional football. I don't know Clowney personally, so I don't know whether or not he values his education. He's ultimately just hurting himself because what's valued out there - in football, in work of all kinds, in society - is pushing yourself and being a team player. And judging from the comment above about all the different maladies he's had, he's not playing for the team. He's playing - or not playing -  for himself.

Do you think the Ol' Ball Coach doesn't know exactly how hurt he is? I'm sure the trainers are working on Clowney around the clock and reporting directly back to Spurrier. Clowney has been pulling this Julio Jones garbage since fall camp. You may see this problem as the exploitation of college kids?, but I see it has a societal problem, "do it all for the money."

I respectfully 100% disagree

As I suggested above - the press has hounded Spurrier about Clowney all season. Spurrier answered the question openly and honestly with patience.

The simple fact is Clowney didn't feel ready to play, and Spurrier said as much. Clearly Clowney will need to answer to future employers later.

What happened to him was Taylor Lewan.  He hasn't been the same since the Outback Bowl.  By his own admission Lewan was the best tackle he faced and despite the widely publicized "hit' he did next to nothing in that game.

First time his confidence took a major hit and it's in his head.

Clowney has just been one

Clowney has just been one major disappointment this year so far. He was supposed to come in and probably have 20 sacks by now. Maybe he really is hurt, maybe he isn't, but this isn't looking too good as far as draft scouts are concerned. I'm sure he's getting double, and maybe in some cases, triple-teamed, so that hurts his stat chart a little bit. But still, he should be dominating his competition.

He'll still go high up in the draft based solely on his potential, but at this rate, he can probably kiss the first overall pick good bye. And if he doesn't produce much else this season, he can probably kiss first-round status good bye as well.
