OT-Clock Management Rant

I can't watch one more game right now without letting off some steam.   This has happened multiple times so far but most recently SDS and Temple are tied with 1 minute remaining.  The team with the ball holds it until there is about 35 seconds and jacks up a shot.

You have to shoot with about 50-55 seconds left so you can get a 2 for 1.  I understand if you can't find a decent shot, but to just hold it so the other team essentially has the winning shot is moronic.

I just don't get it.

Also, can anyone explain how for 39 minutes teams run offense to get the best shot then in the last minute teams just hold onto the ball and then go one on one.  If that was the most efficient offense why don't they do it for the 1st 39 minutes?

If I had known Jamie Dixon could so massively blow a game like that at the end, I would never have picked them to win it all...

1.4 seconds left, no timeouts for either team. Your shooter just made his first free throw to tie the game. Now, one of two things can happen:

1) He makes the 2nd and Butler has 1.4 seconds to get off a halfcourt shot or Laettner heave

2) He misses, and Butler has to do the same thing but can't position themselves during an inbound and have to do it on the fly--> they aren't getting off a shot closer than halfcourt

Regardless of which one happens, why oh WHY do you have your players try to go for that rebound when you know Butler is in the double bonus? None of them should have been on that side of the court. Dixon had more than enough time to gather his team and explain all these things while the refs were checking the time on the first foul. Just plain dumb.

another clock management thing that has been bugging me during these ncaa's is when a team tied/down 1 will wait to take the final shot until there are only 2 seconds or so left. obviously you don't want to give the other team the ball back with too much time, but it has seemed like there have been multiple games where the offense didn't have enough time for a putback to potentially win a game.

It was definitely part of their strategy, but I don't see why.  Its one thing to use clock running offense, but late in the game they were using clock not running anything.  Unless it is the last possession I see no reason for this.  They weren't getting good shots is the point.  If you start your offense with 10 sec left in the shot clock and get a crappy shot, why not start 10 seconds earlier and try to get a better look?  It doesn't make sense.

Yeah, the end of the Pitt-Butler game was a coaching failure.  With only 1 second left, Pitt should have pulled all its guys off the line to avoid that.  The shooter should have been tasked to cover the inbounds guy if he made it, but everyone else should have been back to avoid a stupid foul.  I thought it was ticky-tack, but there is no question he fouled him.

needs to be smart and not go for the ball. Howard is simply trying to secure the ball, much less a shot to win the game. There's almost no chance of Howard making a full court heave shot. Just let it go and go to OT.  It's on the player, not the coach IMO.

The coach put the kid in a position where that could have happened and very little good could have happened. You are just about never going to get a tip on a rebound.

Obviously the kid needs to not reach but there's no reason for him to be there in the first place.
