OT: Cleveland Browns land Hue Jackson as next Head Coach

Submitted by mGrowOld on

The remaking of the worst franchise in pro football continues. Reported by multiple sources in the past hour, Hue Jackson, former Raiders HC and current Bengals OC has accepted the job as Cleveland's head coach.  Finally we get our #1 choice.  Finally we arent settling for somebody who's never been a head coach before and nobody else wanted.  Finally we get somebody that was actually interviewed by other teams and still chose Cleveland for some reason.

Here we go Brownies....here we go!

Why on earth would Nick Saban leave a place where his boosters guarantee him a gross talent advantage in almost every game to coach for a franchise that has managed to "provide" its coaches with a severe talent disadvantage in a league that is designed for parity?

Saban isn't going anywhere. He's still a NC short of Bear Bryant, and he'll be in the shadow of BB until he matches him; then the question is can he overtake BB.

Right now, Saban is arguably the greatest college coach of a generation. With one or two more NCs at Alabama, barring a Joe-Pa fiasco, he'll be considered the greatest college coach of all time. You don't leave that on the table to coach the Detroit Lions.

I'll give you average to good.  We're about to break in a new corner and our LB situation is up in the air with Whitehead wanting to start and Tulloch losing a step.  If Ngata is gone, then we'll need to replace another DT.  Too many question marks to call this a great defense.  It has the potential to be very good, which is good enough if the offense can pick up where it left off.

I listen to Mike and Mike on my way to work in the morning.  (I know, I know, but I get my sports info from them usually).  They had him on and Greeny asked him the NFL question.  He kind of skirted around the answer and definitly didn't shoot it down.  So, I almost wouldn't be surprised if he ended up somewhere.

Why would he go to the pros?  25% of the NFL coaches were fired this year.  He makes a ton of money in Alabama  He gets his pick of the crop for players (no draft like the NFL), and I think they even built a statue of him already.  He doesn't have an irascible owner to deal with. He will go down in Alabama history with the Bear.  What is the upside in leaving--other than getting out of Alabama, and he has obviously made peace with being there.

Try it never happens for the Browns..  I follow our ofd friend Tim Kawakami and the 49ers are reeling that they lost out to the freaking Browns of all teams.  And he was scheduled to interview with the Giants today or tomorrow and that obviously didnt happen.

Haslam was the only owner not present for yesterday's owners meeting (sent his wife) which was a very good sign.

Got our man!

explain the idea around "got the guy we wanted".

Not that I proclaim any semblance of understanding of quality coaching hires (Lions fan, here), but I am not sure of the appeal of Jackson over other candidates out there.

Seriously interested in your thoughts.

1. Largely credited with the development and success of the Bengals offense. Remember - Marvin Lewis was a defensive guy.

2. Actually been a head coach before with the Raiders

3. Actually had some prior success as a HC going 8-8 with said Raiders.

4. Has experience in working for crazy, meddling owners.  When HC for Raiders had Al Davis in charge and from what I hear Jimmy Haslam is cut from the same meddling mold.

I follow all the NFL guys on twitter plus Tim Kawakami and to a man they are calling this an unexpected home run hire for the Browns.

Um Al Davis is a thousand times a better owner than Haslem. There is no comparison there. Toward the end, Al had a short fuse and both him and Hue didn't get along.

Hue did a nice job with Oakland and should not of been fired when he was. I think Hue has a real shot to make the Browns a better team if the GM and ownership actually let him.

Can't find a gif for that, just still images.  Did find this one to go along with that "lowered expecations" theme, though.

How shitty does it feel to be a Browns' fan today.  Their whole organization seems to be one of the biggest shit shows (starting with the owner) in professional sports right now.

Sucks for them...and that's coming from a Lions fan.  Wowzah.

Yea not so sure about "guy we wanted". I'll take it as "guy with somewhat experience" over first time head coach. Either way the team is a dumpster fire and is easily three years out from being any close to competitive. We'll see how this draft goes on whether there's a future. Otherwise he's just the next 3 year place holder until we rinse repeat.

Good for him. I have sincere-if-meager hope that Haslam is finally building something stable. I think the hiring of Paul DePodesta should help in this manager.

Still, I think the Titans and Colts did this the best way: you have to have a GM before you have a coach. There is just too much at stake for the GM and coach not to be on the same page.

You know, I think Hue is a really solid football coach. The first time around, Hue got a raw deal in Oakland and was fired even though it was the best the raiders had looked in awhile.

Hue is a players coach, the guys love him. I think this is a much better hire than Pettine.
