OT - Chuck Pagano returning to Colts

Submitted by Mr. Owl on

ESPN reporting Chuck Pagano agreed to an extension with the Colts.

Rumors that everybody Irsay tried calling about their interest in the job hung up laughing their asses off are unsubstantated..

The team is scheduled to officially announce the deal in a press conference that starts at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Just like his dad, he makes his moves late at night.

That's... very surprising.

What a mess that franchise is. Yet, they still have Andrew Luck--they could go 10-6 next season easily.

If I were a Colts fan I would have zero confidence in the front office. None whatsoever. The expectation, as Irsay has stated publicly, is that with a QB like Luck multiple Super Bowls should be on order. But they're charting a course to make Luck the next great player who never won the Big One.

What's so bad about the Colts? This year they were down, but Luck was hurt (and they even won some games with Hasselbeck, I believe, who eventually got hurt, himself). They've been winning a fair number of games the past few years, I thought.

I know Irsay is an addict and probably not the best boss to have. But from a roster standpoint, what are they lacking? A RB shouldn't be too hard to find, once Gore stops being reliable (if that ever actually happens). They have a pretty good, young receiving corp.

I guess that leaves, what, OLine problems? Neglected defense?

They have major issues in the trenches, especially the OL.  And what did the GM do to address those issues last year?  Draft and sign a bunch of skill guys.  That's why Luck (and Hasselbeck) were hurt this year, they just got lit up every game (a la Gardner).

Ah, gotcha.

The mind boggles how any team, college or pro, can let their lines go to seed. I understand trying to build a line and failing (poor recruiting in college, drafting busts and/or missing on free agents in the pros), but just letting those positions go to shit is such a proven recipe for failure.

They're the favorites anyway. They barely lost the division this season as it was. Granted, the Texans had an even worse QB situation than they did, but with Luck at the helm they should continue to win the division easily.

It's winning Super Bowls that's the problem. And acquiring a new RB may be necessary but it is far from the key issue.

Must be Irsay came out of his speed ball induced stupper long enough to realize it was a bad bad idea.  But what is in it for Pagano? I hope he made them pay enough so when they fire him next year it was worth it.

but I thought Irsay was a typo. I was trying to figure out what the first thread with his name in it was trying to say. Obviously I can only say that Oakland was trying to reach Chuck by phone this morning. I will leave now. Go Blue!

The Indianapolis Star is of course all over it....LINK

This whole thing is a Chuck Pagano power play, but the nicest kind, the purest kind – what you would expect of Pagano. Some folks around here, the most pessimistic of Colts fans, are sick of hearing this in the media, but it’s relevant today: Grigson is right; Pagano is a great man. The players love him. So do the coaches, the locker room staff, even the media. Even, perhaps now, Ryan Grigson.

It seems like Grigson and Pagano have their ultimate fates tied together now, but it will be interesting to see how the Colts do over the next couple years. As the article points out a couple times, Chuck Pagano is a survivor, and he seems to bring the best aspects of that attitude to the locker room with him.

From a born Yooper to growing up in Colts Country, this is a somewhat surprising move.  Irsay is a first class turd, but in a different way then say a Jerry Jones.  IMO, he generally is out of the spotlight, unless it's a DUI or having too many opioid prescriptions.

For the average Colts fan, the sentiment I felt and most others shared was; Fire Grigson, retain Pagano.  When he hired in, I wasn't confident in the hire.  Similar to Hoke, RR.

Then Arians.  Should have kept him from a FB as a business standpoint.  Sure keeping him would have been a PC blunder, but Irsay himself is circus sideshow, and this blunder would've been forgotten.

We'll see how the Colts do.  I'm optimistic.

More so for UM.  Can't wait for next season. GO BLUE.
