Interesting idea, and since it seems to have the backing of government it'll probaby last a few seasons at least.

On my recent trip to China it seemed like there was a decent following of the NFL, especially in the bigger cities. I'm just hopeful there will be a team in the city my wife is from so there will be more to do there the next time I visit.

Wow.  Now that's a wild idea.

If it does have State backing, then Chinese Football could develop very rapidly indeed.  When you have a billion people to choose from, you're likely to have a few that are freakishly large, fast, strong, whatever.

And when the government can find them and select them as toddlers, and place them in demanding athletic schools away from family and other distractions, that talent can be developed in a generation.  Just like gymnastics, or diving.

Does China even have enough football talent to compete with DIII caliber competition from the states?

The league’s 20-man rosters will be divided evenly between Chinese and American players, Judge said, with the American players being drawn from the A.F.L. and colleges.

When I did a study abroad trip at Peking University in Beijing back in 2007 I showed them a video of Michigan football as well as pictures and they thought it was amazing. The Chinese students loved the MMB and the banner touch as well as the actual game. There were so many questions it was rediculous but I tried to answer as many as possible. They would definately sell out the national stadium (Olympic Birds Nest) for a game.

I've indoctrinated quite a few Koreans (especially kids) by showing them videos of Michigan football and hockey.  One kid was running around after watching, yelling "touchdown, Michigan!"  Put a smile on my face.
