OT - Cheap Flights to Michigan?

Submitted by TXWolverine44 on

Hello all,

I'm supposed to be standing in the wedding for one of my good buddies at his wedding in mid-August and have been scouring different sites for some cheap flights out to Detroit. Right now, i've used priceline and the cheapeast roundtrip from El Paso, TX to DTW is still about $475. Anyone have any good tips on how I could possibly find a cheaper flight? Thanks for any advice!

Fly Southwest from El Paso to Chicago Midway, take the CTA Orange Line downtown, walk to Union Station, and board the Amtrak "Wolverine" for Detroit. Or, if you want to get there on time, take Megabus to Ann Arbor / Detroit.

I'm about 13% serious.

I'm flying the reverse, Detroit to Houston in a few weeks for a wedding and got 1 stop for near 450. I had been scouting the sites for a while and that was the best price I found. Good luck and I hope your able to find something cheaper

Crossover to Ciudad Juarez, sling some rock, and then the $475 will seem relatively inexpensive. This all hinges on you not getting beheaded, of course.

I'm in El Paso, it's never cheap to fly back to Michigan.  If you get in early, Southwest Airlines might have some good non-refundable deals, but it always costs an arm and a leg because El Paso is a small airport and you always have to connect to get anywhere farther north than Nashville.  My average round-trip flight is always around $400-500.

Look up each part of the flight individually (so that it's two one-way searches instead of a roundtrip search). In the past, this would be much more expensive, but that's no longer the case.

I setup daily alerts on kayak.com early and often. I've tracked a AUS to DTW flight at the end of this month for a few months now. It's been tracking well above the average since I started watching at around 450-500. I usually try to get this flight for 300-350. I'm no expert, but I think the airlines have inflated the prices during the summer because more people travel.

Last week, I saw the flights drop 75 in one day, and jumped on it. An hour later, they were back high. Being only 2 weeks out, the flight's still fairly empty, so I imagine they might drop soon to try to fill seats.

So my recommendation is use kayak, if you can, be patient and persistent, and try to take one of your segments on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Good luck.

The words cheap and flights just don't go together very often anymore. Studies have shown that the best fares usually are offered about 6 weeks out from your travel date. Of course there are a lot of variables that could have an effect such as supply and demand.

I agree with Spirit. I'm from Atlanta, but I live in Lubbock right now for grad school. Often times it's worh the drive to Dallas (it's quick going through west tex anyways) for he cheap flight. Spirit is WAY cheap. I've seen tickets for 15 before if you catch them early.

Spirit is a rip off. They charge for carry-ons. You think you are getting a cheap flight, but add in all the extras and you are paying the same or more as you would for a Southwest flight, but getting sub-par service. And they don't even care that their service is always rated worst in the industry.

In conclusion, NEVER fly Spirit.

Just in case you didn't realize, Southwest flights do not show up in metasearches. You have to search on southwest.com. I'd advise checking there. They do fly to Detroit now.

Many of the small, low-cost airlines in Europe, there is more than one place. Low-cost carrier phenomenon significantly increases competition and thus keeps interest rates low for consumers. For cheap find flights to cities in Europe and the UK to Italy checks. You can find online hotels booking  to major cities are quite easy.
