OT: Charlie Strong to Texas
Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Charlie Strong told the Louisville AD today that he'd be taking the job at Texas. SI is reporting that it's a 5-year, $25 million contract. Source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/louisville-39-no-decision-39-190949890--ncaaf.html
Obviously a good pickup for Texas. I think he'll do very well there.

Texas doesn't need Nick Saban with its resources. Just a solid X and Os guy with an ability to instill toughness. Strong is that guy, though any number of other coaches would have also fit the bill.

Just sayin...

Fans are actually clamoring for Bobby Petrino.
January 5th, 2014 at 3:21 PM ^
For him? Maybe not.

almost have matching noses...

It's not the worst idea, actually. Petrino has always been able to coach (though there are some serious questions about his recruiting chops after Louisville's and Arkansas' collapses after Petrino left) and he's certainly available. Louisville might even be able to convince themselves that this time around Petrino could be interested in sticking around at an ACC job.
I don't think he'd be my first choice, but they could do worse.

Solid hire, but bottom line I'm struck by how pedestrian it is.

Just where I'm at with it. Fine by me if he ends up as the Texas version of Saban, but I don't see him doing much better than Brown. Still, good to see such a huge, traditional, rich school hiring an African American coach.

Pat Forde actually had a good point(!!) when he noted that Strong hated all of the booster-meeting, speaking, glad-handing, etc. at Louisville and that the administration struggled to get him to participate in any boosting events. Texas is an extremely political job (like Michigan and Notre Dame) and I wonder if there won't be a culture war as soon as the team stops winning. (He ain't a Texas Man!)
January 5th, 2014 at 3:22 PM ^
nor DKR were "Texas Men" and they did just fine. As for politics, that only really helps a coach retain a position when he's underperforming--I'd just assume have a unpolished coach who will either win or gtfo.

Saban=Better coach, wife didnt want to leave 'Bama. Wifey runs shit.
Harbaugh=Better coach, coaching in the Tundra as we speak. To wait is risky, especially for NFL HCs who almost never leave the top spot where they're doing well to...you get it.
Sumlin=Maybe a better coach, probably not, coaches at Texas' hated arch rival who also happens to play in the SEC. Obvi.
Briles=LOL. Seriously?
Mora=Maybe a better coach, probably not. No BCS wins, just getting going out there in LA.
Fisher=They thought they could get Fisher? Again, LOL.
Malzahn= Probably a better coach, and the only one out of your little list that is at all realistic.

Hey, it's the college student with a 10-year-old son who is best friends with every reserve player on the team.
Any more fake inside information to share?

Texans aren't happy about the move and want Mack back. LOL!! What a shocker. Red State Logic.
January 5th, 2014 at 5:53 PM ^
Judging other people is something I'm really trying to eradicate and something that works for me is to ask questions. The only question I have for you is why do you believe that adultery is ok and that winning is more important than doing the right thing?

January 5th, 2014 at 3:48 PM ^
Well, I think that is more money than anyone except Saban is currently earning, and Strong isn't quite as accomplished as he is.

I don't follow . . . are you suggesting that they should have paid Strong more? Or are you suggesting that they didn't get Saban because they low-balled him? I doubt that was it. I'm sure they would have given Saban whatever he wanted, but he probably just didn't want to move.

to UL makes sense. After all MSU owes them one for poaching John LLL during their bowl game several years back.

I think we overrate Narduzzi's prospects because we see him up close and personal. My guess is Louisville passes him over, as much as I'd love to see him go.

In other news, Golden appears to be staying at Miami.
January 6th, 2014 at 1:35 AM ^
Apparently MM was going to be the hire all alone and they were just waiting to he was done with Tenneessee.
January 6th, 2014 at 1:37 PM ^
MM is a canny hire for them. He can come in and say "everything BOB told you about getting you to the NFL is true and I know because I was in the league for 30 years" while also promising to never run out on them based on an incredibly long track record of loyalty in Houston/Tennessee and his PSU roots.
January 5th, 2014 at 8:13 PM ^
Strong is a good hire for Texas because it's a win/win for the a$$holes running that place. If Strong does well, then they can claim the credit for his hiring. If he doesn't do well, then they can fall back on the well we didn't get the guy we wanted first excuse. I think Charlie Strong is a hell of a coach and DC. After the departure of Dan Mullen and Charlie Strong from Florida, Urban Meyer started having health problems.

So anybody not named Nick Saban is a win/win hire for Texas?
