OT: Chantel Jennings to Pac-12

Submitted by Lucky Socks on

Chantel Jennings - formerly of Wolverine Nation, who recently seemed to be pseudo-covering the Big Ten in addition to Michigan athletics - recently tweeted that she will be moving west to cover the Pac-12 for ESPN.  Seems like a step forward in her career.  Good for her.

I followed and then somewhat-promptly unfollowed her 3 or 4 times by now.  After not following her for a couple months, I see a RT or something that reminds me that she might have some useful information.  After a couple days, I'd realize my mistake and unfollow her -- baiting tweets and ledes, rudimentary analysis, and a refusal to interact with her followers.  One of the reasons people like Brian, Ace, BiSB, and Meinke are such good twitter follows are the interactions and back-and-forth quips that you can watch from afar.

Pseudo-covering the Big Ten.  Her responsibilities seemed to grow gradually, but I think she was still employed to be Michigan-centric.  I assume that covering the Pac-12 means that she will cover the Pac-12.  Either way, she thought enough of the position to take it...so I think it's safe to say it's a step forward.

Maybe the journalism market on the West Coast provides more opportunities than the Midwest does. Probably wouldn't hurt to start networking and getting references in that neck of the woods in case one didn't want to stay with sports his or her entire life.

I don't know all the internal politics but I believe ESPN's purpose in getting Chantel and TomVH when they did was they wanted to start up a competitive web community to us and Rivals and Scout. That never really materialized but they'd gotten such great personnel they couldn't just let them go, so Tom was moved to just generalized recruiting and Chantel hung around with ranging responsibilities hovering around Michigan and environs. I believe this means they're actually going to have a defined role for her now.

Meh. I've grown sick of her since she's started to prescribe to the school of journalism that seems to think HEADLINES and controversy and edginess is the only way to be a journalist. But that's just, like, my opinion, man.

I was thinking that Chantel sounds like a girls name? He must be one tough dude or he's a kicker. Then I thought well ok he's going to the pack 12 but what school? Man who's posting this shit nowadays. Sorry Chantel no offence good luck out west and spead the love for UM. Go Blue!!!

I will always remember her for her pieces on Stu and Zack she wrote for the Daily.

You could tell from her writing that she felt the same way that we did about them.  Admiration and pride and kind of a greatfullness all mixed together.  She knew she was watching something special, and she conveyed it well.  She will be missed.

And I was kind of hoping her and Ace would get together.  Their babies would be smart AND beautiful.

I'll bid her good luck as a fellow alumnus, but I was never a big fan of her writing/posts. The "quarterback controversy" was the last straw for me.

Peace.

This is a loss because she's a Michigan alumnus and I think she's totally hot. Though as a writer, I agree with many here that she left much to be decided. It seemed like she started of doing well, then went too far in the HEADLINES and shock factor direction. It seemed like all of her headlines at the end of the season were "Is there a college team in North America who could beat Michigan right now?" or "Is Devin Gardner worse than Nick Sheridan with dementia?"

A) Writers don't make headlines. Editors do. So the headlines on Chantel or any writers's stories aren't their doing. So stop blaming them for them. B) Every single news outlet writes and creates headlines aimed at trying to get you read that content. It's the whole point of news coverage. ESPN, Fox, CNN, The New York Times, etc, etc. They all do it. This is even more so the case online when there are millions of things for you to look at and read.

For as much as people bitch and complain about journalists and the media, they are all generally clueless about how it works. And it just pisses me off.

Bad for us. Rittenberg and Bennett are the worst. Her work may have not been the best, but her Michigan coverage far surpassed her peers on the ESPN Big Ten blog. And this will probably mean a decrease in Michigan coverage at ESPN.

She had permanent braces mouth and at times sounded as if she was swallowing a gulp of water in mid sentence BUT that being said she did drop a few good dimes regarding Michigan athletics from time to time and for that she will be missed. Best of luck.

I liked her because she is cute for a Michigan grad.  At State she'd be middle of the pack.  Reporting was okay.   Best of luck Chantel!
