OT: CBS to have "Johnny Cam" for Bama-A&M game

Submitted by Lionsfan on

Headline says it all. CBS has decided to put a single camera on Johnny Manziel for Saturday's game.

No matter where he is and no matter what part of the game it is, we will have a shot of it,” said Craig Silver, CBS’s coordinating producer of college football, told (Richard) Deitsch. “If he is anywhere in sight of that camera, we will catch it.”

The guy is not perfect, but this is absolutely ridiculous. I can't think of any other player in recent history receiving this much scrutiny.

I've been rooting him the whole time, even moreso after ESPN tried to sandbag him after the Rice game by pretending that football is some church affair. Players talk shit all the time, worse than anything Manziel did. If I was the reigning Heisman winner who went into Alabama and took down the National Champions, do you think I'd let some fuckstick from Rice shit talk me about something on the field? Hell no, good for him.

He should probably keep some humility given the fact that A&M didn't really win anything last year. No division or conference title or even a BCS bowl bid. Just a win over an exhausted Alabama team that had played in Death Valley the week before, and A&M damn near let that one get away.

Focus on your team and not your own personal achievements.

This is not:  CBS puts camera on him and that causes him to act like an egotisical jackass.

This is: He acts like an egotistical jackass and that causes CBS puts a camera on him.

As far as one reason why has fame gone to his head?  Look no further than a coach and university that enables his behavior.

This. Much like Hernandez or Lawrence Phillips, the guy lives a life of near zero consequences for any of his actions. I'm sure getting benched for a half and then having to sit after the game was well in hand were brutal punishments for this kid.

He thinks he can get away with anything, and this idea has been reinforced by the irresponsible actions of the adults who are supposed to mentor and guide him. This is exactly why Urban got some much-deserved flack for allowing Hernandez to be a blatant criminal at Florida just because he could catch and run fast.

Johnny Football to Aaron Hernandez or Lawrence Phillips. Both have done horrify things off the field that includes murdering people, running people over with a SUVs.  Johnny Football's shortcoming is typical for college students in terms of partying and signing autographs.

It's pretty fucking tame compared to both players whom you've tried to compare which is hilarious in so many different ways.

This doesn't seem too far from the norm for high-profile players, does it?  I'd imagine that guys like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have cameras on them for essentially the whole game, too.  Same thing for a lot of coaches, no?

Tom Brady and Peyton manning are professionals who have won superbowls. This kid won a popularity contest that is heavily influenced by ESPN for the Heisman. All of these sports medias are almost disgusting how willing they are to act like TMZ. I blame Jersey Shore lol. This is also ESPN's fault too.

I have worked a game, that I was michael Jordan cam. It was when Jordan came back and played for Washington. A preseason game in Grand Rapids against the pistons. Where ever Jordan goes you shoot him. For network shows this is common for mic'ed up players. You shot that person trying to get good sound. But for college football, I don't think this happens very often. Nba finals yes, and it's Kobe, lebron, or Jordan. It has to be a zoo at Texas a&m, media wise right now. So it makes sense for CBS to do this. I hope this story turns out ok. But it feels like it is heading in a bad direction. If this does not become a 30/30, I don't know what will.

Why? Because ESPN, CBS, et. al. has convinced you of it?

Simple question: With this camera on him throughout the entirety of the game, do you think the producers will be equally likely to show Manziel in a positive light as they will a negative light?

If the answer is no, then this is just another self-serving ploy by Media at the expense of a student-athlete.

I think all of the networks have built him up, then they have completely enjoyed, and capitalized on the downfall.

However, it's been apparent that Manziel doesn't have the maturity to handle any of this.  Anytime you drive a Mercedes that costs more than some people make in a year, and then you cry to people about, "how about you walk a mile in my shoes" you're an asshole.

If you want your profession to be NFL quarterback, and you have the chance to spend a weekend with one of the best players to ever play the position (Peyton Manning).  Then you ruin that chance by getting hammered the night before, AND lie about it the next day when there were 100 people that saw you at the bar, you are an asshole.

It's nice to paint it as "The media framed him!" but Manziel has 100% brought this on himself

  • Geeting kicked out of the Manning Academy
  • Tweeting about 'can't wait to leave College Station'
  • Over-trash talking against Rice
  • Signing autographs for money
  • I think a few run ins with the law this summer(?)

Everybody loved Manziel when he won the heisman but he's done nothing but be a spoiled kid since then. He's the one who changed the public opinion of him, not ESPN

The media did framed him to be a bad guy but the fact that a couple people compared him with Aaron Hernandez and Lawerence Phillips is mind boggling.  All Johnny Football have done is drink and party which is normal for any college students including any student-athletes.  Signing autograph isn't a henious crime considering he's always hounded for autographs and there is no evidence aside from the dealer's words that he signed for money.

Trash talking is completely normal and it's overblown because of the coverage.  You'd be surprised at how much players talk trash.  Johnny Football is tame compared what you don't know what they said on the field.

Johnny Football is a normal college kid who happen to be a victim of an overexposure by the media.

The people in charge of the networks won't be happy until all of college sports are nothing but a smouldering ruin.

Fox Sports...they have admitted that they don't care about the game. it merely serves as a backdrop onto which they project commercials for other things. Then during those other things, they run more commercials.

Then there's Mickey Mouse and their meme-factory. And now this from CBS.

Has anyone watched any of their programming for more than 45 seconds?  I should have known better to expect anything even halfway decent from FOX, but ... ugh.  Just ugh.  I guess on the plus side it did replace the SPEED channel for me on Dish Network.  Huzzah?

I've watched and like the evening, "round table" stuff they do with the likes of Donovan Mcnabb, Andy Rodick, Gary Payton, etc. with the blonde gal serving as mediator; it isn't anything mindblowing but it's been better discussion than I've seen on ESPN in the last 6-8 years.  They almost mix that in while doing the evening highlights (their Sportscenter).

Anywho, I know it's probably not what we'd all hoped it'd be but, I've found it a bit better at times than the Mothership.  I don't/wouldn't dispute what you're saying though, either.

Of making a team sport about one person every week now. Pretty soon the other 21 guys on the field will disappear and we will just have to watch Johnny football make money signs with his hands after he plays catch with Tebow.

EXACTLY! I absolutely love what's going on here. I am rooting for meltdowns, indiscretions, and all that fantastic stuff. I want to see him continue to mock opposing teams and make a mockery of the NCAA. This kind of shit that puts the media in an uproar is awesome. I'm just waiting for Manziel to make some kind of statement criticizing Tebow for the cherry on top. It's just good entertainment, which really has little to no effect on M football.

Pardon my language, but this is fucking pathetic. I'm so sick of this fool and cannot wait to see Alabama eat this kid alive.

Do you think it's Manziel's decision to have CBS do this?

Do you think it's Manziel's decision for ESPN to spend every TV and radio show ripping him?

Sure he's made some poor decisions (really nothing compared to the assault/theft crimes that other athletes have made), but it's the media's fault for shining a ridiculously large spotlight on him and highlighting/criticisizing every single thing he does.

I missed the part where I said I'm blaming Johnny for this. All I said was I'm sick of this kid. In a way, it actually is his fault when you think of all the shit he did this past summer. If he just laid low, he would not be getting nearly this amount of attention.

So, is he going to at least get paid SAG rates for this?

What the NCAA is saying here is, "We will take as much income as you will generate, but you don't get any of it."  I think Manziel should capitulate now and have a camera every game.  Then, when he is finished playing, he should sue.

I really hope we see an end to kids not being able to take money from outside sources soon.

At least this way the prosecutor will have multiple camera shots to prove which bama player murdered him on Saturday... I don't expect him to walk off the field, no one beats saban and lives to tell about it

You know why CBS is publicizing this?  Because controversy sells.  Multiple ex-ESPN talking heads have come clean about how ESPN makes sure all its major news broadcasts are planned to have two people with opposite viewpoints, no matter how ridiculous.  CBS is announcing that they will have a Manziel Cam for the same reason - because it prompts dicussion threads on college football websites that don't even have anything to do with Texas A&M.

Manziel is a good college football player who also happens to be an immature 20-year old.  But when you phrase the truth like that, it's not that interesting, is it?

And accounts for 8 TDs, one more than Peyton.

Then I hope he walks up to this camera as yells "fuck wit me, you know I got it" like the Jay-Z song and throws up double birds as he walks off into the locker room.

This is nuts.

Second, this is pathetic, but somehow perfectly and entirely fitting for Johnny Football, the NCAA, the SEC, and college football in general.

They all derailed months ago, but like a typical Hollywood action flick, OMG there's a pair of fuel tankers ready to explode any second!

So don't even think about looking away just yet!

Nothing says "amateur athletics" quite like a major broadcasting station following around a college football player during a game.  I just hope the announcers talk about Poochy Football the entire game, and then ask other players what they think of Poochy and why he's so awesome.
