I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one to find that hilarious. For a minute I was worried I'd become too much of a cynic. Turns out it's just a result of being awake.
This is coming from the guy who suddenly left his niche at USC for the NFL, where he had already been fired twice. Yeah, he's totally shocked.
At least in the pros, you are expected to pay your players. Carroll always struck me as more smoke and mirrors than legitimate coaching, and now we know one of his tricks. Now his legacy at USC is marred, and when he is fired in the NFL (and it will happen), he'll probably have a hard time finding a high-profile gig in college.
SEC will welcome him with open arms.

That make me hope USC appeals and the NCAA uses it as an excuse to drop an anvil on them instead of using the 50-pound sledgehammer.
Clearly there is some basis, even if you think the punishment was harsh. What a jackass.
What a reptile. I still can't believe Carroll is sticking with the "we are victims" defense. His contention that he didn't leave USC to escape impending penalties is truly laughable. So far, though, the NCAA has rewarded stonewalling and penalized self-reporting, so I can see where he is stonewalling out of habit.
Thankfully, it looks like the NCAA is finally going to teach the rest of their members that stonewalling no longer gives a school "carte blanche" to do whatever they want without consequences.
What's really sad about this is that Carroll is escaping any personal consequences for his actions. I would ban him for two years after his NFL job goes awry.
Of couse he thinks that. It happened under his watch so he's just as guilty.
Roger Goodell will take any steps against Pete if it becomes clear that Pete is lying and was obstructing the NCAA investigation; in the interests of protecting the NFL brand, of course. Pete may have jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire on this one, especially as he continues to spout off about how injust this is.
One can hope.
