I don't even think the Dodgers will pay him that kind of money.

Their goal is to build the team through the farm system/younger players and money was just a way to bring in some talent immediately to bring the fans back.

The goal for 2B seems to be signing Cuban Alexander Guerrero and probably having Mark Ellis hold down the position until Guerrero is ready.

You have a perennial MVP candidate and likely Hall of Famer, the greatest second baseman of a generation, who has posted a higher WAR than Miguel Cabrera each of the past two seasons. If that's not enough, he's remarkably consistent, in great shape, and hasn't missed more than three games in a season since 2006.

I'd argue that 2nd base right now is pretty fallow, with maybe 2-3 guys who are consistent performers year-in, year-out.  The WAR argument is fine, except because 2nd base is a bit down his "replacement" player inflates his value a bit.  To his credit, he's a plus defender.

And maybe it's just being here in NY, but I think people are a bit more down on Cano than his national reputation.  He does have a bit of a lazy streak in him, or at least that's the talk.

I'm in NY also and see him a lot.  Like a lot of very talented players at least part of the "lazy" talk stems from the effortless way they seem to do things.  Cano is a phenomenally talented fielder.  Having said that I've seen him fail to run hard to first a few times but you can say the same about most major leaguers these days.

I remember when the universe what up in arms because Jon Koncak received a 6 yr $13M deal from the Hawks in '89.

Franchise owners are morons, especially the retarded Yankees.  If they had any semblance of a clue, athletes would still be making $3-$8M/yr tops.

A true sign of the apocalypse was when Brandon Phillips of the Reds called $72M a slap in the face because poor him, though in one at bat he was making more than a third world farmer makes in a lifetime, he wasn't getting the 10 yr $200M Voto was...

On the bright side, at least the vast majority of this wealth bleeds right back into society given how little these guys know about saving and living moderately.

I wonder if he'll get anything close to that.  All of these giant contracts seem to have blown up in the faces of the signing teams -- ARod, Pujols, Votto, etc.  You would *think* that teams would finally figure out that this is a bad idea.  Especially the Yankees since they've just been burned by ARod.

Curious why you included him?  He was injured a bit last year, but his OPS has been as good as ever the past two years.  Teams are definitely pitching around him.  I don't think $18M for him is bad compared to others.  That said, the final years of that 12 yr contract could be an issue.  How many more years left on Pujols?  Ha ha ha.

Votto is the best of those three deals, but he'll still be 41 at the end of the contract and earning $25M a year for the last half of it.  That just seems like a lot for dude that hits a little above .300 with around 20-25 HRs a year.  Yeah, he has a high OBP, but I don't know if that's worth $20-25M a year.

In general, 10-year deals in baseball just seem nuts.  Especially when its someone 30 yrs old that's asking for it.

The New Yourk Daily News has a nice story with several Cano quotes - HERE.

"Cano says he wants to go over pros and cons with his family before making any decision about where he plays next season, noting, “I want to get advice, because your mom and dad always want the best for you.”

I have to wonder if the discussion with mom and dad basically begins with, "So, mom, dad....if the Yankees won't give me $305 million over ten years, what do you think I should do?" I know this is a question I would love to ask my parents.

Hmmm, I can't think of any time recently the Yankees have gotten burned by giving someone that large of a contract for that long, can anyone else?

Cano probably couldn't have picked a worse time to ask the Yankees for stupid money.

But I bet they still sign him. They are desperate and I'm tracking the following starters missing in 2014: Mo Rivera, Andy Pettitte, A-Rod (almost assuredly banned for the season), Jeter (Ok, not gone, but might as well be), Ichiro (I'm sure I'm missing a few).

Their farm system is in poor condition, CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira spent considerable time on the DL... The Yanks are gonna suck for at least a few years.

For crying out loud he is 30 years old! Doing a simple across the board split means he would be making 30.5 million when he is 40 years old which is way to damn much.

I remember reading a story where it was statistically proven that baseball players have the highest likelyhood of juicing (e.g. playing hard everyday) their numbers in a contract year and then coasting along once they get paid.  I mean just look at the contracts given to guys like Votto, A-Rod, Hamilton, and of course Pujols....not worth it at all.

This is the Yankees were talking about here. I agree that there is no way they should entertain this.  You can get 80% of the production for 40% of the price.

I hope the Yankees don't come anywhere near that with their offer. I like Cano, but there's no way he's worth that kind of moeny. If he leaves, what are the chances Jeter makes the move to second? I've heard outfield/DH for him, but I'd still love to see him in the field (almost) every day.

I can't honestly remember when one of these 8-10 year contracts worked out; granted I think they're, blockbuster contracts that is, relatively new in the sporting world (ten years?) but the point stands.
