OT: Bulls Fire Thibodeau

Submitted by BornSinner on

Smart or stupid?

Which team will get him next?

Who's going to replace him? Scott Brooks? Fred Hoiberg? uh...

The Pelicans should be giddy right now.

Lastly, is "running players into the ground" actually a thing? Or is this a recent phenomenon that old school players shake their head at?

One of the criticisms of him (besides bad offenses) is that he plays his favorite players a LOT of mintes, maybe more than necessary.

That could be contributing to his players being more injury prone and not having as much energy.  Evidently this was one of the Bulls mgmts' major problems with him.

Where the fuck does this spoiled star meme regarding the NBA come from? The last case of spoiled stars in the NBA was probably the Decision which turned out to be a great move on Lebron's part. Melo to NYK and Deron Williams to the Nets are about the 2 that stick out.

Look at the NFL if you want to see spoiled stars. OTA season is starting up aka drama queen season.

Smart. His offensive sets were brutal. The Bulls organization has been all about waiting for Rose to be available in a playoff run the last few years. That finally happened and they still got bounced in the second round per usual.

I'm hoping they get Mark Jackson but I don't know if he's even in the cards. I personally thought Thibodeau was a top 10 (maybe top 5) coach in the NBA. All of the crap about him not getting along with management sounds a lot like HARBAUGH, and look what's happened to the 49ers since. I highly doubt the Bulls will have nearly as much fallout but it's still disheartening. I think that because of these problems with management, Thibs had to go but those problems were stupid in the first place. I'll miss seeing him going crazy on the Bulls bench; it was a good five years.

Mark Jackson is just as bad of an offensive coach as Thibs was. I doubt that's the direction you want to go. Jackson also had run ins with management. Ask a Warriors fan.

Actually now that I think about it, Scott Brooks is god awful at offense too.

a coach who knows how to run offense. The Warriors made an unpopular decision when they fired Mark Jackson, but they made a great hire in Steve Kerr who knows how to leverage Curry into an offensive power while still maintaining a great defensive team.

There are only about 20 other teams in the NBA that would be happy to have him.  You can only do so much when your "star" player averages a handful of games over the time you're there.

I think Hoiberg goes to Chicago. Will be interesting to see who takes the ISU job. Not a top job in terms of prestige, but they return a ton of talent this season.

I would bet anything if the referees had seen this and made the appropriate call Cleveland would've lost the series and Blatt would've been fired, not Thibs.  And this is coming from a hard-core Cavs fan

As a Chicago fan, I shook my head when that happened. Not outraged . . . calls or non-calls happen, shots go in and they don't, and that's just how it works sometimes. Still, I remember thinking that it often is on a simple thing like this that success happens, or doesn't. Lebron is tremendous, just as was Jordan. But losing to Cleveland sealed Thibs' fate.

Here in Chicago, there are at least a few questions about Paxson, and whether he'll ever be happy with a coach. He has already fired two taskmasters (Skiles & Thibs) and one guy who never should have been here. (Vinny.) It really takes a special coach to maintain discipline, but not have too heavy of a touch. Phil Jackson was that kind of coach, and I think Pop down in San Antonio is the same. And, for that matter, Beilein. Hard to say what's going to happen. A bit demoralizing in Chicago.

At least we have the Blackhawks . . . until the salary cap breaks them up again at the end of the season!

It was probably time for the Bulls to move on.  Thibs is a great coach, but his style of coaching probably reached its limit with the current set of players.  Lebron wasn't the reason why the Bulls lost to the Cavs this year.

It seems like a change for the sake of it, and I'm not sure this Bulls team was ever constructed to win in today's NBA.  I don't love Thibs, but his defense would be great with Davis and the Pelicans, but I could also see him make sense in an Orlando situation where he can just send a bunch of young guys crazy on the defensive end.

Please do not go to New Orleans and run Anthony Davis into the dirt. Basketball fans deserve to see Anthony Davis reach his full potential.

A couple things here: First, he's a great basketball mind and coach. You don't win that many games without knowing what you're doing. But I think it was time to go in a different direction. Based on Reinsdorf's comments in the press release it would appear that the problems between Thibs and GarPax might have been actually worse than the rumors. I think Thibs is probably slightly insane and a little too intense and he probably lost the team a bit this year. It was pretty evident in games 5 and 6 they were done and there were times during the year that it looked like Jo and Pau picked up fouls on purpose to get a rest. The guy wants to pretend he's a great coach like Pop and then does pretty much everything the exact opposite of him.

Someone mentioned Hoiberg staying at ISU. That's the guy the Bulls want and they may have even already reached out to him to guage his interest. He played 4 years for the Bulls, so knows the organization well.

He's a good coach. But man, he had no mercy on Jimmy Butler, and injured players like Noah minutes wise. That's the main reason he had friction.

Players would also plan offseason workouts away from Chicago just so they could get a break from Thibs. And some in their exit interview said they wouldn't want him back.

I'd say it was the right call to go in a different direction. Why not Hoiberg??
