OT: Buckeyes name ND as second most loathed team
From 11Warriors.com, their online poll of the Buckeye faithful, asking, "Besides That School Up North (TSUN) [which 11Warriors, in strict violation of The Ohio State University Style Manual, spelled "Michigan"], which college team did you grow up hating the most?"
Answer? Surprising to me, since they hardly ever play:
If you must know why, it's because of the GCL-ND trans-state football pipeline. ND has been stealing players from SW Ohio for decades and turning great players into good players and good players into Mike Golic. To top it off, ND refuses to play OSU (for good reason; the last time they played, it was a goddamn bloodbath).
When we're not busy hating you, we hate them.
It's rational.
I always thought that my Buckeye friends (I have several) were a little disappointed whenever I would earnestly tell them that my own personal rivalry with Ohio State was borne of respect, and a fantastic historic rivalry, and for the customary spoils that go with winning that last game in November.
Whereas with Notre Dame, well I just fucking hate Notre Dame.
I'm sure that if That School Up North had been among the "most hated" options, we'd have gotten about 112% of the votes cast.
Yeah, although many OSU fans truly hate Michigan, I have quite a healthy respect for you guys. Michigan is a great school. If I had my druthers, you guys would be 11-0 every year, right before we beat you 724 to -11.
Edit: also, fuck Notre Dame.
Especially being at the 'Shoe. (Quite a different scene from when I saw Woody's last game there, a 14-3 Michigan three-peat win.) But Sheridan and Threet were trying their best, and giving it their all.
GCL = Greater Catholic League
I went to one of the GCL schools (St. Xavier) prior to heading up to Michigan for undergrad... and of course there is a pipeline to Notre Dame. I actually never knew that the Buckeyes felt so much consternation about the players heading to ND over OSU because I always just took it as a given that those kids would be headed to ND.
Since there is such a large Catholic population in Cincinnati and they grow up worshiping at the church of the Fighting Irish, I'm never surprised at all of the guys that head up there. Of course, Cincinnati folks are Buckeye fans as well, but I imagine that UC's upsurge hasn't helped with OSU's Cincinnati recruiting either, since they are no longer the only respectable football school in the state.
Actually, Cincinnati being "good" (and, let's face it, they were only Big East Good) has only hurt insofar as it gives Kelly better roots to recruit out of the 'Nati. Cincinnati will return to cellar dweller status shortly.
Butch Jones isn't exactly dog-meat in coaching. He's been successful in his own right and has done so in a reasonably short period of time in coaching terms.
I lost the OP at "sensible bunch of Buckeyes."
Yeah, OSU hates the Domers pretty extensively. What I'm surprised about is PSU not being all that high on the list. Maybe because the question was framed "Which team did you grow up hating?" and PSU is a newish addition to the Big Ten, but there's definitely some high-caliber hatred of PSU in Buckeye land.
Also weird how the list is mostly national powerhouses, instead of Big10 teams. A Michigan list would start out with MSU, ND, PSU, and maybe even Iowa, right?
Mine wouldn't go past the first two in the Big Ten. And definitely not Iowa. Iowa is a lot of people's second favorite. Not even taking my UVA loyalties into account, I'd put teams like FSU, USC, USF, and Tennessee way above PSU.
Under Fry and now Ferentz, I've always had a lot of respect for what Iowa's been able to do.
What's the story with USF, by the way? Seems like an outlier among the usual suspects like the Seminoles, Vols, etc.
I don't like USF because they seem really uppity over their newfound position in a BCS conference, what with that billboard they put up about being the fourth major power in the state of Florida. The only reason they're in the Big East is because the Big East was desperate to maintain a Florida presence after Miami left. Plus their basketball program is really, really slimy. I'm hoping part of the fallout from Big Ten expansion busts USF down to C-USA where they belong, and then we can be friends again.
all. I'm sure RR sent Jim Leavitt a nice card when Leavitt was shown the door.
I'd probably go MSU, ND, USC, then maybe Alabama and Florida, uh...
Actually I'd run out of steam there, but I wouldn't really care much beyond our main rivals and USC. There's room for contention with Alabama for oversigning/general dickishness, or Florida for 2006, or Nebraska for 1997/2005.
We have some healthy competitions with PSU, Wisconsin, and Iowa, but none of them are really that hatable, as much as they hate us or want to be hated by us.
It's all about the fight songs. Anyone who has ever sat through a Notre Dame or a USC game (I know most here have at least one of these) will leave hating them because of the incessant repetition of the fight songs. If you didn't go in liking one of the teams, you will leave HATING them. Oh yeah...guys like OJ Simpson and Lane Kiffin don't help much either.
In reality though I think every fanbase hates Notre Dame.
...masochists
oh man everyone really does hate ND :)
these results do not include votes sent in by messenger pigeon or smoke signals from burning couches.
Why didn't they have LSU in the poll? :)
