OT: Buckeye fan new low?

Submitted by mdsgoblue on
I was just listening to Bill King and a regular bucknut called in to talk about Ohio basketball. He finishes his call with this awfulness.
My grandmother died a couple of months ago and it's sad, but she was a Michigan fan. So it's one less to listen to come November.
I like comedy but this goes a bit far. Can't even say its typical!

If his grandma really died a couple of months ago this would be sick (and I know that's possible with Buckeye fans). But he made that up as part of the joke, along with her being a Michigan fan. That's why it's no big deal. Hell, it's actually kind of funny. And it's no worse than singing "grandma got run over by a reindeer"; which would be sick if grandma had just died, not to mention if she had just died from being ran over by something.

I was listening when Bill took that call too.  I believe it was his wife’s grandmother, but that’s still kind of crazy.  What do you call Buckeye fans that never attended OSU?  Wolverine fans are referred to as Wal-Mart Wolverines.  I have no problem being a Wal-Mart Wolverine because Kate Upton is one as well.  Can someone come up with a good nickname for these types of Buckeye fans?

Why would you want to do that? "Walmart Wolverine" is one of the dumbest, most self-trolling epithets. Having a large and loyal fan base is something to be proud of, not to denigrate. There are plenty of reasons to hate on Ohio, but having fans who didn't attend the university is not one of them.

Exactly.  The term only exists because some jackass radio jockey on 97.1 who went to MSU has a huge inferiority complex.   Oh, and also because he figured out that if he can piss off a bunch of Michigan fans, he gets more calls into his worthless show.

Odd Lot Buckeyes?

***I still think having any kind of negative nickname for people that represent 95% or more of a team's fanbase is rather misguided.  ohio is a much larger institution than Michigan.  Assuming similar overall sized fan bases, there are likely a lot more WW than OLB.  Those who chose to follow with no other reason than fandome I would argue are likely more exciting fans--they are fans only because of passion--not necessarily a bad thing.

Get with the times.  It's Big Lots now.  I agree about the fan base thing with one stipulation.  I will never understand how someone who did not even attend a school can have so much contempt for another non-alum who doesn't root for their team.  They chose their team, why can't they let me choose mine?  It's not my fault that I realize there's a larger, better world out there beyond "Buckeye Nation".

You really need to reconsider this IMO...I live in Columbus as a "minority among the masses" and I would be extremely proud to be united with others and share MY Michigan experience with them if I was enrolled (or alum) and they weren't.

Don't undermine the disparity between UM and OSU. Trust when I say that I would give anything to be in Ann Arbor over Ohio. My friend's family has a lakehouse in Michigan. We VISIT Michigan from Ohio!

Amongst the many reasons, I guess my main point is that since you are a UM fan...act like it man. There's a reason why there's 60,000 students here as opposed to 40,000 in AA. And it's a good thing.

This is off-topic, but:

OP, I am a marketing professional, and I am going to offer you some unsolicited advice:

Put up different photos on the front page of your website. I understand what you're trying to do, but I was greeted with an eviscerated pig with his arms reaching out to me as though his final moments before death (right there on that table) were to beg ME for help.

It's awesome that you use nose-to-tail. It's also awesome that you make kickass barbecue. Too much eviscerated pig, man. Just too much.

I have been told that by a couple of other people in the last few weeks.  Consider those pictures removed and thank you for the advice.

Edit:  I think it was my intent to show the whole process because we get so many questions on "How do you do it?".  Probably people don't really want to know.  Thanks again for the advice.  Site updated!

I would like to echo what Boston Wolverine said and add that you might want to remove some of the pics in your gallery as well. There are about 5 with eviscerated pig and 4 of them are pretty graphic. I may not have the same experience that Boston Wolverine does but I've spent 20 years in sales and marketing and those pics are not helping you sell your product. Focus more on finished product, those shots were making me hungry. Just my two cents.

Why worry about the stupid things OSU fans say?

I'm sure most people on this blog have said stupid/horrible OSU jokes (pizza delivery jokes etc.).  Yeah it was stupid and in bad taste- but so what- most jokes that are said are stupid with many being in bad taste.

Think baout how many Michigan fans have MSU family and make comments- I imagine many of them probably were distateful or crossed a line as well.

If its not a key OSU figure or player I'm not too interested in dumb things said about the rivalry.

also cause she missed the Big Ten Title this year, if she is a fan I am sure she would have loved to see that happen. I live in Ohio and it isn't a buckeye thing I swear the whole state has the dumb gene. I am sure it was a joke, but in very poor taste. But coming from a fanbase who has a band called or use to be called The Dead Schembechler's. Thiis can't come as too big of a surprise.

The people are sick savages. It's why I don't like em, don't respect em, and generally hate their entire fan base. When I see people in Michigan with Buckeye gear I give them a dirty look everytime.
