OT: BTN now included free on Dish!!

Submitted by austinnt on

For those of you who pay extra for a sports package right now through Dish, you may not have to anymore! I got an email from Dish today saying that BTN is now offered free of charge to all lineups! I for one am very excited!

Just wanted to share in case someone out there is paying for their sports package just to get BTN.

Also, this is my first post, so yay me!

Can anyone confirm to actually seeing it on their TV?  That will save me from going to the bar to catch the Indiana's, Minnesota's, and Northwestern's of the world play Michigan!  That would make me a very happy fan.

I got Dish installed about two weeks ago and have BTN. I never knew it was an issue with Dish and just assumed it would be available. I have the America's Top 200 package.

My deal with Comcast runs out in April and I'm thinking about switching to Dish or DirecTV (my other choice is WOW and they are awful). My biggest worry is the signal going out during bad weather and I'm not sure about DSL internet. I'm leaning towards DirecTV because they offer beIN Sports in HD. For those that have made the switch, how are things compared to cable?

This is why you want Dish. Just read the features of their new Hopper 3. Two things are in their "coming soon" category, like the voice command remote control and sports bar feature (four programs of your choosing on one screen, which is fantastic when football is around, or any other sport). The sports bar feature will be sick on a huge TV screen. Here is the thing, though - it's meant to work with 4K TVs; however, it still works with non-4K TVs, but the picture quality is just diminished a little bit. For me, though, that's OK because when I'm using it, it will only be for college football games and I when I have that many games on one screen, I don't necessarily HAVE to see them in the best picture quality. How different the picture quality will be, I don't know. As far as I know, most people have not been able to view the sports bar feature. See below for a picture.

I have had Directv for at least 15 years now. The problems with weather effecting your signal is very rare.  Local channels work ok in bad weather . It has to be very bad for it to effect the signal. I wont say it doesnt happen. Just watch some dvr'ed programs on those occasions it happens and youll get through it .

I have always installed ,  maintained and adjusted my equipment on my own.

If you get DTV or Dish , before the installer leaves, make sure your signal is at least a solid 95%

unless you have something outrageous with DIRECTV, you probably just lost all of your promos. this happens to me every year, my bill jumps up to around $160 and I call them and pull it back down to $110. this is with 5 wireless minis, one genie, there sports package, and NHL Center. Direct TV is not expensive, you just have to lean on them every year.

I did lose all of my promos. I also called them to complain about the price and they always pull the "we can give you $5 off for 6 months" crap. I told them that is not good enough and they just did not give me anything else. Besides, Dish Network has much better equipment. Also, DIRECTV's annual price increase used to be five dollars and now it is seven dollars. I was paying about $145 for the total choice package. No movie channels.

$145? I've got that package with a genie and two other receivers and it's just over $100.

Although the biggest news is that ATT is going to be bringing DTV over IP in the 4th quarter with one package being basically everything that's available on DTV right now. I'd be fine dropping all the equipment and all that if I could go back and watch whatever I wanted whenever I wanted to. Also, since it would all be over IP it *should* be cheaper. I'm guessing $60 - $70/month for all the same content.

It's been "Free" on Uverse for as long as I can remember. I'm sure that somewhere in the small print it got bundled together with something else I'm paying to much for like the "Free" SEC and Longhorn Networks.

For those of youthat want to switch to dish (which I have and have been very happy with), find a friend that has it before you sign up and have them "recommend" you. You both save $50 on your bill the next billing cycle.

Plus maybe he/she may buy you a beer. win/win.

Last year, my kids got me the DISH tailgater.   So now we have HD at all tailgates for $7 per month.  You can start and stop as you please without cost.  It just acts like another Joey receiver (other than you can't access the Hopper).  It's so freaking easy to use ... just need a inverter generator ($350 at Home Depot) and an HD TV.  It is so sweet !!!!  The unit finds the satellites automatically (no pointing) and weighs about 4 lbs.

I've had DISH for 25 years ... wouldn't change.
