I hope to God the AD at ND realizes Charlie Weis is the greatest ND coach ever and should never be fired. They should give him a lifetime extension.

That he does not go to ND he is an amazing coach. My buddy was on the grand valley teams and I went to watch with Curt Anes and they were good fun to watch and they won.

It totally discounts our own team. Notre Dame is a good team and I expect them to finish the season strong. They'll probably win 9-10 games. Weis isn't going anywhere.

The whale has been there 5 years and has only ever won with someone else's players. A certain radio host calls South Bend the bermuda triangle of 4 and 5 star recruits. If anything it makes out win more impressive when freshman and sophomores can beat touted Juniors and Seniors.

A few non-bcs conferences are making a legit claim they should be in and the at-large (read ND) bid should be gone. Make ND join a conference if they want in the BCS, but not the B10. They're a Big East school. But all of this is another argument that the Whale losing has opened.

Charlie won't be there next year. My ND friends are telling me they expect it to be Skip Holtz.

That's not to say that he can't recruit on his own, but he has done a poor job of developing his own recruits. That's really interesting that your ND friends think Skip Holtz will be the next coach. I've been saying that since last year. I'm tooting my own horn, but good speculating by me I guess. It makes a lot of sense. Skip Holtz has done a pretty good job at ECU and he used to be an assistant at ND (is he an alum too?). And I think he has some family connections there or something.

and they will probably be able to score on USC and give them a game. If they win 10 games they aren't going to fire him, especially with what they have coming back. The Skip Holtz hire would be pretty interesting. I think that might be even better for us than Charlie. He got alot of play for beating Va Tech and WVU last year, but he still ended up losing 5 games. I'd love if they hired a coach that's never lost less than 5 games in a season.

"When does the university have to have facilities done so your buyout isn't lowered?

"They have to have them in place for this fall."

So, the university missed the deadline?

"Pretty much. Look, I just wanted them to know that it is important for me that if they want to continue to move the program forward, [things must be done on facilities]. ... [Athletic director] Mike Thomas has been awesome. He is with me on this 100 percent. But we have gone through a new president, and there was an interim president; you know how that goes. But I am an impatient guy. That is my problem. We can't wait. Our new president will have these things on his table, and I'll keep doing my job and we'll see what comes up at the end of the year."

No way he's their after this year. period.

Okay, so lets say he does decide to leave Cincy. If ND is off the market (they keep Fat Charlie), where do you think he ends up?

I'd have to believe that Kelly would not do a lateral move, he'd have to be offered a job at a bigger name BCS conference school. I just do not see one of those out there.

It's all posturing. After the season, Cincy will pony up the money to expand their stadium to 50,000 or so seats and he'll end up staying. Kelly will follow the money every time and Cincy will pay out the ass to stay relevant in at least one sport now that basketball is dead.

and builds a strong in-state alternatve to tOSU for Ohio talent.

But since these things never work out the way I want them to, he'll probably wind up at ND or MSU.

I hope he takes over at Clemson or South Carolina or a school of the like. I don't see dabo being at Clemson too long even though he just got the job and Spurrier may be done soon. FSU would be a good gig too. Just go south and stay away from the big ten.

Is a great line of thought. I don't know if it has much merit, but many believe Rich Rod has a "thing" for Clemson, and could be a place he'd bolt to if the heat at UM doesn't, uh, get less hot.
Kelly to Clemson might seal off an excape there.

I'm not so fearful of Kelly. Rodriguez is better and is at Michigan. I still think Michigan is MICHIGAN (when they have the right guy), and I don't care who coaches whom.

The thought of Kelly with Weis' recruits is frightening. But I don't think that Weis' is leaving after this year. Unless M is not good, the ND team we saw on Saturday is very good and will likely be favored in every game this year with the possible exception of USC. I don't see ND firing Weis after a 10-2 season and a likely BCS birth. Nor do I see him getting fired after a 9-3 season.

My hope is that Kelly ends up in the NFL and leaves the CFB scene completely.

The Whale would be easier to buy out. I didn't say anything about RR, I don't think anybody is comparing Kelly to RR. We're comparing a possible candidate for the ND job who would be inexpensive because of a lack of a buy-out. We're referring to a coach, in Kelly, who took DAMNtonio's recruits and had Cinncy's first 10 win season in decades. We're not saying he is a better coach, we're saying he is a coach who could also be very dangerous with 4&5 star recruits - as opposed to the 2&3 star recruits he currently is coaching. Have some faith in your fellow MGoBloggers.

He loses 5+ games this year. But I don't think that's likely.

I think he's pretty safe if they actually play up to their talent level, don't get punked by inferior teams like Pitt, Navy or Syracuse, AND win at least one big one (PSU, USC, Bowl game against decent, non-WAC team).

If they lose 3 + the bowl game, or 4 but win the bowl game, he's in that too-close-to-call limbo.

Personally, I think ND loses 2-3 in the regular season, and is a big question mark in any bowl matchup, given their past history. So I think it's plausible he gets fired, but more likely he stays on another year. They have the tools to beat anyone on their schedule, even if it's highly unlikely they'll beat USC. But I think they'll get it (enough) together, which will help out our chances of landing a good bowl game at the end of the season.

Besides, do we even know that Kelly wants the ND job?

Is it really a bad thing if Brian Kelly goes to ND? I realize that would lower our record against ND and for the season, but:

-ND is a non-conference game
-Playing better opponents makes for a better team
-Winning our conference is more important than beating ND regularly
-Schedule strength is a useful tiebreaker for bowls and such

While coincidence has done a great job in providing inexplicably good non-conference opponents during 2007 and 2008, that's not going to happen again for awhile, and we should really try to be a great team in the future, not just a good one that pads its record and then falls apart during bowl season.

sure better things could happen for our sake, but it weakens USC, Florida, FSU, OSU, MSU and every other school just as much as it hurts us. And on the plus side if he resurrects that program, then any time we beat them we're going to get major respect.

and Kelly might not keep Corwin Brown around, which would help us on the recruiting trail.

September 15th, 2009 at 9:26 PM ^

We go head-to-head with ND in recruiting all the time, possibly more than any other school does. Sorry, but to say that a strong ND would hurt us no more than faraway schools like SC and Florida is nonsensical. Not to mention that having an extremely tough game the second week of the season every year generally wouldn't do anything for our national-title hopes.

baorao

every time out. having a mediocre, non bowl winning ND team doesn't help us any either.

and take a look at their roster:

http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/nd-m-footbl-mtt.html

sure, we go head to head with them alot, but they are pulling kids from the backyard of far more super powers than just us.

and frankly, their recruiting really can't get much better. the more worrisome part would be their improved player development. but I don't believe for a minute that Brian Kelly is better than Rich Rodriguez in that department.
