From Wikipedia: Kelly was born in Everett, Massachusetts, and was raised in an Irish American Catholic family in Chelsea, Massachusetts.[1] He attendedSt. John's Preparatory School in Danvers, Massachusetts. His father was a Boston politician.[2] He was a four-year letter winner atAssumption College as a linebacker. After graduating from Assumption in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in political science he served as linebackers coach, defensive coordinator, and softball coach from 1983 - 1986."
Michigan is not his home state.

Have you or someone close to you ever lived in a place they weren't from for the vast majority of their adulthood? Attachments form. Your wiki dive was worthless.
December 30th, 2013 at 5:36 PM ^
Your home is where you born and raised, not where you lived for a portion of your adulthood. The man is not a Michigander. The man is a pale-faced leprechaun from the Land of Red Soxed Kennedys. It is where you are born and raised that your personality and values develop.
I've lived in Michigan my entire life. This man is not a Michigander in my eyes.

If you've lived your entire life in Michigan you may not be the best judge of what someone who has lived significant portions of his life in different parts of the country considers himself to be.
December 30th, 2013 at 5:59 PM ^
Someone said he was from Michigan and I pointed out that he was not. I don't consider him a Michigander. If you and others do, okay.
December 30th, 2013 at 9:37 PM ^
No offense, but isn't your opinion meaningless? If Kelly's years in Michigan make him feel like a Michigander and more inclined to take the Lions job, it doesn't matter whether you, or anyone really, considers him a true Michigander.

you are what you choose to be. A relative of mine has lived in Arizona for over 30 years... he doesn't even know Michigan anymore, it's more of a memory than a place. Another relative has lived in Indiana for almost the same stretch of time and flaunts their Michiganader status constantly, even planning to retire Up North. These things are fluid.

He has very strong ties to the state, and he's probably not getting the patriots job anytime soon

Who ever is the new coach, they will FAIL! So it would be funny to see Kelly fail and leave coaching forever! Detroit is the graveyard of NFL coaches.
December 31st, 2013 at 2:43 AM ^
After 20 years in a place (followed by stints in two neighboring states, with South Bend being literally walking distance from the state line), it might feel like home. I'd guess Detroit has more relevent ties to Kelly and his family than Boston at this point.

Is not what I would call a disciplinarian.

I feel like I've seen this before. Firing Schwartz because team lacks discipline and hiring someone who will change the culture. Bobby Ross failed to change the country club atmosphere as he called it that existed under Fontes.

was a disaster Somehow he thought fans wanted to see him more than they wanted to see Barry Sanders.
December 30th, 2013 at 5:35 PM ^
I'm sure that's precisely what he thought.

Sanders retire early! One of he worse coaching picks ever!

I can't wait to see Kelly scream into Stofford's face on the sideline after one of Stafford's side-arm INTs.
That would lead to the best fat-faced-guy-fights EVER

from the Jets: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/ot-espn-notre-dame-has-hired-jets-linebacker-coach-brian-vangorder-dc
Why would Kelly bolt to Detroit after this hire? Or, did he bring Vangorder in knowing that they would both go to Detriot? I'm sure Detroit (if they are interested) reached out to Kelly's agent weeks ago to gauge his interest.
December 30th, 2013 at 5:14 PM ^
Because his own defensive coordinator left and he had to hire someone. Pretty easy.
December 30th, 2013 at 5:45 PM ^
I don't think he will bolt after hiring his buddy. Thus, my question to see if anyone had reasons for Kelly to leave based on this particular hire.

Not the biggest fan of him as a person or his demeanor, but he's been a winner at every stop in his career. The Lions could do much worse.
December 30th, 2013 at 5:44 PM ^
they could be the Browns. Yikes
December 30th, 2013 at 5:12 PM ^
Let's see...a coach hated by Michigan fans, hated by Michigan State fans and wouldn't be tolerated for one minute by elite millionaire athletes? Sounds like a perfect pick for the Ford Family.
December 30th, 2013 at 5:34 PM ^
You really think for one second that UM and MSU fans would care that he coached at ND if he started winning with the Lions? Anyone who did would be acting completely juvenile.

St.Nick when he was the MSU coach. But I would support him if the Lions hired him away from Alabama!

Look how terrible he's been
December 31st, 2013 at 12:26 PM ^
Chip Kelly? Not an ND coach. Not hated locally. Not sure where you're even going with that, but happy new year!
December 30th, 2013 at 10:45 PM ^
Kelly's name was bandied about both when RichRod and Hoke were hired--as well as, and perhaps more seriously, at MSU when they hired Dantonio. His reputation as an ass was already well-established at Grand Valley. There was a reason, er reasons, he was apparently never seriously considered at Michigan and MSU. They have been discussed on this Board before--and they go beyond his facial color when screaming on the sidelines.
None of that means the Lions won't hire him---rather, it almost insures that they do.
