OT: Brian Kelly - considered by MSU or UM?
So, he was a Michigan based coach who had a lot of success at a lower level (like Tressel). Why don't I remember him being discussed for the MSU or UM vacancies recently? I have heard rumors about things (like cover ups for players), but those are without support AFAIK.
Don't get me wrong. Hoke is great. I am just curious because my ND friends ask me.

I don't have a real answer to that question, but by God am I glad he isn't here. His team is a fluke and this isn't what I want Michigan to look like:

...but when one of your wins hinged on a missed FG atempt in OT (Pitt), another hinged ona controversial goalline stop against Stanford, and that's just two cases off the top of my head.
Maybe not entirely a fluke, but they definitely are damn lucky as hell.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:51 AM ^
And now they get to play USC without Barkley. I guess it is just their year.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:15 AM ^
Yep fluke is the wrong word - they have gotten their breaks, hell if Michigan kneeled on every play in the 2nd quarter rather then Denard throwing 4 consec INTs I think Michigan wins that game by 10, but a lot of games every year are decided by 1 or 2 plays and this year they fell for ND. Hard to go undefeated no matter what luck you have since usually a break goes against you. It is sort of sickening but it is what it is.

" I suspect many ND alumni are conflicted with this season."
I doubt it. Winning has a habit of making all the bad get swept under the rug quite nicely. Ask the cheaters at OSU.

Yeah, because everybody knows Bo NEVER got angry on the sidelines.

Agreed - but I like how Bo stayed flesh color when he got mad.

Different era, almost all coaches used direct fear as motivation back then.

He may be referring to 2007. He was one the names on a lot of people's list as Lloyd's successor. At the time, I was actually surprised he wasn't considered by UM. Glad we dodged that bullet.
Edit: CRex beat me to the punch.

Dantonio was hired in '07 when Kelly wasn't a commodity coach, and he was already at ND when we had our opening
November 17th, 2012 at 11:16 PM ^
As I recall, Kelly was interviewed for the MSU position in '07; I had the strong impression at the time that the interview had gone poorly but I no longer remember why I thought that. Anyone remember anything? Message board rumors, AD comments...anything?
November 18th, 2012 at 2:33 PM ^
Not sure what happened with the interview, but Kelly was head coach at CMU and GVSU before that, and Dantonio was much more experienced with bigger programs (DC at OSU, HC at Cincy) and already coached at MSU before. Kelly ended up taking Dantonios job at Cincy.

He was considered to replace Carr but his never made the short list. MSC and others felt his personality was too abrasive/he was too much of a bastard. He gets a line or so of mention in 3 and Out.
November 17th, 2012 at 11:22 PM ^
He was on the "secondary" list after the first group of contenders. The Mad Hatter and Rutgers coach were the top 2; then after being rejected they still went looking so BK was not a serious candidate except in the media. The talk about BK is he is all about BK... and abrasive.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:37 PM ^
Kelly was perfectly well qualified to be considered, but was ruled out because of his personality. MSC and others were very conscious of how the coach's personality would reflect on Michigan (fergodsakes). I believe MSC's quote was that Kelly was determined to be "an objectionable person".
Les Miles was eliminated at that time, and was never seriously considered for the same reasons.
Say what you want about RichRod's on field success, his behavior was befitting a Michigan coach.
And we can now see that personality/ behavior was one of Hoke's "pluses" as well.
November 17th, 2012 at 10:58 PM ^
This is Michigan Fergodsakes! We don't like coaches who wear visors or turn purple from screaming at his players. The guy is a grade A asshole IMO who has caught a lot of breaks this year to be 11-0 at this point. Brady Hoke is 10x the coach ( and person) he is.
November 17th, 2012 at 11:00 PM ^
Kelly was not proven enough when MSU hired Dantonio from Cincinnati (Kelly wound up replacing Dantonio at Cinci). Hoke was hired after Kelly was already at ND. Kelly's name was mentioned as a replacement for Lloyd Carr, but RR was a much bigger name and was a proven BCS coach.

I've also heard some rumors he managed to piss the Harbaugh clan off during his time at GVSU. Which was impressive due to the fact the Harbaughs (Jack and John) had moved on to Pitt right as Kelly was starting at GVSU, so somehow with little overlap he managed to piss in their cheerios.
November 17th, 2012 at 11:04 PM ^
A lot of people in cincy told me he wasn't considered because his of what he does when he's away from football. Apparently he loves strip clubs.

This might call for a Photoshop. With the above cowboy boot picture.

Dude, a kid died, man. I know we don't like rival coaches and all that, but witty one-liners about things that are just tragic, are still tragic.
November 17th, 2012 at 11:28 PM ^
Yeah, I think his point was that Kelly is an asshole who let a kid die. It's not just a witty one-liner, its the truth, and anybody who would ever want that scumbag coaching at Michigan values football over human life.

Question, since this issue is up again, where has it been shown that Kelly had a role in deciding that the videographer should go up in the tower with the bad conditions? Always wondered where this was established and would like to know. Thanks.

November 17th, 2012 at 11:30 PM ^
One-liners aren't approriate, but it's a valid point. That and the LIzzy Seeberg case are both things that I really don't think would have flown at UM
November 18th, 2012 at 2:31 AM ^
Re. those things not flying at U of M I think you're right and it's super disturbing that flew at ND. U of M is a secular institution. It seems like a religious institution would hold themselves to the same level of morality, if not a higher one.
Not trying to stir up religious discussion or anything but that's just the truth.
Stuff like that is immoral no matter where it happens but the fact that it happened at ND also makes it uber-hypocritical.
