OT: Brett Favre apparently retiring (again)
Favre is apparently retiring for the 3rd time. I will believe it when the regular season rolls around and he is still not playing.

Uh huh, yep, roger that, righty-o.
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:37 AM ^
Has it occured to anybody that he is just fucking with us at this point?
I can see him decked out in Wranglers, drinking some Ten High. "I'm gonna come back, but I want to see how many people I can piss off..."
At this point, it's kind of comical. If he comes back again after this, we'll know he's just screwing with us. Why should we care so much?
August 3rd, 2010 at 10:57 AM ^
So it's finally over... well at least until the Vikings need him.... but he really likes Mississippi... but the tractor can only entertain him for so long... but he wants to spend time with his family... but football is his life..
August 3rd, 2010 at 10:54 AM ^
August 3rd, 2010 at 10:55 AM ^
don't believe him!!! He's fooled us to many times.
August 3rd, 2010 at 10:57 AM ^
It's a slow day in the office - so I clicked on this link.
I will make sure to avoid ESPN tonight when I get home.
(if it is true - man does that F over Minnesota and its fans - like the Lebron James of football, but old and white)
August 3rd, 2010 at 10:58 AM ^
He has unfinished business.
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:03 AM ^
I think he wants to see how many times he can end his season with an interception and then retire. Doesn't he know that record is already out of reach for anybody else?
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:30 AM ^
And this time...it's for re-al. (Cue metal guitar chugs and explosions)
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:04 AM ^
Brett Farve "plans" to retire. I cannot put enough sarcastic quotations around that word. He is coming back, he did the same thing last year.
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:06 AM ^
He's probably just attempting to avoid camp. Wasn't it speculated that that was part of his motive for retiring last year? No idea where I read that, but I distinctly recall some reporter calling him out on it for not wanting to put in the work.
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:09 AM ^
Yes, that is exactly what he did last year.
However, last year I seem to remember him "retiring" right after the 2008 season, then slowly working his way back through about 120 ESPN headline stories.
If he were to "retire" in August, like this article is suggesting, it would be much different versus what he did last year.
When I hear he's calling a press conference to announce it - I will believe it.
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:11 AM ^
He just wants to avoid camp. By telling the Vikings that he plans on retiring they can "talk him out of it" by about the last week of camp. He wants to stay undecided, leaning towards retiring, so that he has to be talked back and there is more drama. If he said he plans on returning but was undecided the Vikings would tell him to get into camp. It's all to stroke his own ego
Damn, he annoys me
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:09 AM ^
and thats the cue for espn to talk about nothing but this for the next month
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:07 AM ^
Dear Brett Favre,
Please stay retired this time. We are sick of your shit.
Thanks,
NFL Fans

P.S. We just don't care.
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:47 AM ^
P.P.S. Stop beating the Lions into pulp year after year, for the love of Pete, at least go to some team out of the NFC North.

Dear Brett,
Ignore people like MGoBird. You are one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL - even at 40 years old - and it's fun to watch you play football. I'd rather watch exciting football than have a shitty quarterback (*cough**cough*your backups*cough*cough*) running around on the field. People in the midwest are simply sick of you beating up on the Lions and Bears, but do what you want to do.
Sincerely,
Someone Who Likes Good Football
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:26 AM ^
As a bears fan, I welcome him and all his 'gunslinging" INTs. I dislike Favre for leading the media on this goose chase to stroke his own ego (See Izzo, Tom for other examples) and the constant fawning. Yes, he is a very very good football player. I'd be surprised if he retires after having surgery, but I will welcome the idea that there are 52 others on a football team. I'm just not a big Favre fan.
I think we traded with him in hopes that someone would at SOME point break some of Sid Luckman's quarterbacking records from the 40's.
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:27 AM ^
That's not what this is about. People are annoyed with him because he's a drama queen and never makes up his mind. He does everything he does in the offseason to stroke his own ego. Hell, if Tom Brady or (to make a non-homer pick) Peyton want to play until they're 50 and they can still do it at a high level then I am fine with that. In fact, I would love that, assuming that they don't do this drama every off season.
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:34 AM ^
Three words: Change the channel.
I'm starting to wonder if those same three words are a major reason why I don't have a deep seeded hatred for guys like Favre, James and Tebow.
August 3rd, 2010 at 12:11 PM ^
but when I do I've already taken that advice. But I would rather watch ESPN with relevent news not just about the Favre drama then be forced to change the channel choose not to watch TV at all. James I don't mind as much because the "it's all about me" thing was basically a one time deal, and like I said, I don't watch much ESPN. As for Tebow, I originally didn't like him that much but feel he got the most unfair treatment out of the three. Tebow didn't ask for all the attention or go out of his way to create drama, that was put on him. And at least Tebow has done very good things to help people in other places (he shouldn't get hate for doing those things, the media should get hate for over-saturating it). But I was still annoyed with Tebow because I would have enjoyed watching College Football Live or College Gameday if they went over more stuff rather than 50% about Tebow. It is the media's fault mostly, but Favre knows what he is doing to stroke his own ego, and I would prefer ESPN leave it alone so I can watch the channel I used to enjoy a lot back when all they did was show highlights and games

You mind if i co-sign this, because it's pretty much how I feel also.

Magnus,
It's possible to find "Good Football" without the breathtaking narcissism that has defined Brett Favre over the past 5 years. It's not his football-playing that everyone is sick of. It's the constant "will he or won't he" nonsense we're forced to deal with every offseason.
That and "he's just like a kid out there!"
August 3rd, 2010 at 11:48 AM ^
If you think he's a drama queen, then stop paying attention. "Will he or won't he?" only matters to people who worry all the time about whether he will or he won't. It's a media concoction, and the fact that many fans hate him for it is just proof that too many people buy into the drama.
Blame ESPN and the drama-lovers, not Favre.
August 3rd, 2010 at 12:05 PM ^
So I should stop watching ESPN because Favre can't make a decision and stick with it? That hardly seems fair.
August 3rd, 2010 at 12:20 PM ^
You should stop watching ESPN if its programming isn't what you want to see.
August 3rd, 2010 at 12:16 PM ^
But Favre knows what he's doing to, and he has done it more because he knows the media is all over it. As I said above, I don't watch much ESPN and stuff, and I like watching Favre play, but I wish he would do that, just play or stop playing. Again, it is mostly ESPN and drama-lovers that are to blame, but you can't act like Favre doesn't at least play a significant role in this for constantly saying "I'm retiring"/"I'm not retiring"/"I'm coming back and signing a two year contract then retiring because I don't want to play for the Jets" type stuff. He has actually been a lot better this offseason and has made constant flip-flops. He has mostly stayed to his farm, in the past though he was much worse and that's why so many people are annoyed. Personally, I think it's ok to be annoyed with both ESPN and the drama-lovers (which includes Favre).
August 3rd, 2010 at 12:26 PM ^
he has done it more because he knows the media is all over it.
This is purely an assumption on your part. You don't know that he has, and I don't know that he hasn't. Regardless, it would be kind of silly for him to keep doing this when the attention he's receiving is actually negative and potentially tarnishing his legacy, right?
So maybe, just maybe, he's on the fence about playing.
But if he KNOWS that he wants to come back without going through training camp, why would he announce it earlier?
"Hey, guys. It's only May, but I know I'm going to come back. I've already signed the contract. But oh by the way, while you're all doing off-season conditioning, I'll be hanging out at home in Mississippi until halfway through August. They wrote it into my contract that way. Joke's on you, suckers!"
Methinks he'd be better off say "Uhh...I don't know" over and over and over again until it's time to come back. Otherwise, there would be a whole different kind of negative attention, and probably more from his teammates than there currently is.
A good term to describe it: plausible deniability
August 3rd, 2010 at 12:48 PM ^

Given that this is consistent with Favre's idiocy over the past few years there is nothing "plausible" about his deniability.
Blame ESPN and the drama-lovers, not Favre.
I do blame the drama-lovers, and Favre is the king of the drama-lovers. He's also king of the Favre-lovers.

August 3rd, 2010 at 11:31 AM ^
Frankly, I think the media has created the Brett Favre "Undecided Tour." For the last few years, he's taken his time deciding whether or not he'll play the following season. And every year, the reporters ask the same question a million times. When he says he hasn't made his mind up, THEY make a big deal out of it. The dude is taking his time making a decision. When he makes the decision, he'll let everyone know. Why ask the same question a million times, only to receive the same answer? I hate the media.
That said, I'd like to see him play more. He's fun to watch.

We have a friend from Mississippi, who says Favre is a huge stoner, and the whole "retirement" thing allows him to avoid summer drug testing.
