OT: Brett Favre apparently retiring (again)

Favre is apparently retiring for the 3rd time. I will believe it when the regular season rolls around and he is still not playing.

http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/99841644.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQ...

I hope to be like dang for large sections of the season.

You come at the king, you best not miss.

Has it occured to anybody that he is just fucking with us at this point?

I can see him decked out in Wranglers, drinking some Ten High.  "I'm gonna come back, but I want to see how many people I can piss off..."

At this point, it's kind of comical.  If he comes back again after this, we'll know he's just screwing with us.  Why should we care so much?

Hail.

He just wants to avoid camp.  By telling the Vikings that he plans on retiring they can "talk him out of it" by about the last week of camp.  He wants to stay undecided, leaning towards retiring, so that he has to be talked back and there is more drama.  If he said he plans on returning but was undecided the Vikings would tell him to get into camp. It's all to stroke his own ego

Damn, he annoys me

Ignore people like MGoBird.  You are one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL - even at 40 years old - and it's fun to watch you play football.  I'd rather watch exciting football than have a shitty quarterback (*cough**cough*your backups*cough*cough*) running around on the field.  People in the midwest are simply sick of you beating up on the Lions and Bears, but do what you want to do.

Sincerely,

As a bears fan, I welcome him and all his 'gunslinging" INTs. I dislike Favre for leading the media on this goose chase to stroke his own ego (See Izzo, Tom for other examples) and the constant fawning. Yes, he is a very very good football player. I'd be surprised if he retires after having surgery, but I will welcome the idea that there are 52 others on a football team. I'm just not a big Favre fan.

That's not what this is about.  People are annoyed with him because he's a drama queen and never makes up his mind.  He does everything he does in the offseason to stroke his own ego.  Hell, if Tom Brady or (to make a non-homer pick) Peyton want to play until they're 50 and they can still do it at a high level then I am fine with that.  In fact, I would love that, assuming that they don't do this drama every off season.

but when I do I've already taken that advice.  But I would rather watch ESPN with relevent news not just about the Favre drama then be forced to change the channel choose not to watch TV at all.  James I don't mind as much because the "it's all about me" thing was basically a one time deal, and like I said, I don't watch much ESPN.  As for Tebow, I originally didn't like him that much but feel he got the most unfair treatment out of the three.  Tebow didn't ask for all the attention or go out of his way to create drama, that was put on him. And at least Tebow has done very good things to help people in other places (he shouldn't get hate for doing those things, the media should get hate for over-saturating it). But I was still annoyed with Tebow because I would have enjoyed watching College Football Live or College Gameday if they went over more stuff rather than 50% about Tebow.  It is the media's fault mostly, but Favre knows what he is doing to stroke his own ego, and I would prefer ESPN leave it alone so I can watch the channel I used to enjoy a lot back when all they did was show highlights and games

Magnus,

It's possible to find "Good Football" without the breathtaking narcissism that has defined Brett Favre over the past 5 years.  It's not his football-playing that everyone is sick of.  It's the constant "will he or won't he" nonsense we're forced to deal with every offseason.

That and "he's just like a kid out there!"

"Come on, you Wolverines!"

If you think he's a drama queen, then stop paying attention.  "Will he or won't he?" only matters to people who worry all the time about whether he will or he won't.  It's a media concoction, and the fact that many fans hate him for it is just proof that too many people buy into the drama.

Blame ESPN and the drama-lovers, not Favre.

But Favre knows what he's doing to, and he has done it more because he knows the media is all over it.  As I said above, I don't watch much ESPN and stuff, and I like watching Favre play, but I wish he would do that, just play or stop playing.  Again, it is mostly ESPN and drama-lovers that are to blame, but you can't act like Favre doesn't at least play a significant role in this for constantly saying "I'm retiring"/"I'm not retiring"/"I'm coming back and signing a two year contract then retiring because I don't want to play for the Jets" type stuff.  He has actually been a lot better this offseason and has made constant flip-flops.  He has mostly stayed to his farm, in the past though he was much worse and that's why so many people are annoyed.  Personally, I think it's ok to be annoyed with both ESPN and the drama-lovers (which includes Favre).

This is purely an assumption on your part.  You don't know that he has, and I don't know that he hasn't.  Regardless, it would be kind of silly for him to keep doing this when the attention he's receiving is actually negative and potentially tarnishing his legacy, right?

So maybe, just maybe, he's on the fence about playing.

But if he KNOWS that he wants to come back without going through training camp, why would he announce it earlier?

"Hey, guys.  It's only May, but I know I'm going to come back.  I've already signed the contract.  But oh by the way, while you're all doing off-season conditioning, I'll be hanging out at home in Mississippi until halfway through August.  They wrote it into my contract that way.  Joke's on you, suckers!"

Methinks he'd be better off say "Uhh...I don't know" over and over and over again until it's time to come back.  Otherwise, there would be a whole different kind of negative attention, and probably more from his teammates than there currently is.

A good term to describe it: plausible deniability

Given that this is consistent with Favre's idiocy over the past few years there is nothing "plausible" about his deniability.

Frankly, I think the media has created the Brett Favre "Undecided Tour."  For the last few years, he's taken his time deciding whether or not he'll play the following season.  And every year, the reporters ask the same question a million times.  When he says he hasn't made his mind up, THEY make a big deal out of it.  The dude is taking his time making a decision.  When he makes the decision, he'll let everyone know.  Why ask the same question a million times, only to receive the same answer?  I hate the media.

That said, I'd like to see him play more.  He's fun to watch.
