OT: Breaking News - Cabrera and DUI

Submitted by UM4ME on

97.1 and 1130 are both reporting breaking news that Miguel Cabrera was arrested last night: DUI and resisting arrest. Not good.

Nothing yet on freep.com or detnews.com.

Interested to see what direction the media takes this story. It already seems that they are casting him in a rather negative light which is almost the total opposite of how the Josh Hamilton story was handled.

Down here, after Hamilton was suspended in 2004, he didn't get a lot of positive press.   Until he "found Jesus" and hooked up with his now-wife, he was generally portrayed as a gross waste of talent who had self-destructed.  He had become a cheap radio joke by 2006.  When the Rays left him off their roster for 2007, people in the TB area more relieved than anything else.

His "slip" in 2009 was easily forgiven because he told his wife about it the next day, got right back "on the wagon" and because he tested negative for drugs.  He basically went from hopeless and suspended for three years to being an MVP-caliber player.

I hope he stays on the wagon forever, but I am a sucker for redemption stories.  I would even be happy for Maurice Clarett or Art Schlichter if either ever truly changed his and got it back together.

The comparison between Cabrera and Hamilton has nothing to do with "spin".  It has everything to do with Hamilton being a model citizen and Cabrera finding himself drunk and in trouble once again.  If he finds the strength to stop making these bad decisions then he too will get the positive "spin" that Hamilton enjoys.

P.S. I did my best to read all the responses to make sure I'm not repeating anybody's comments, however, my apologies if I did

Clearly, what happened at the end of 2009 wasn't an isolated incident, and wasn't as easy to brush away as it appeared when he seemed "reformed" in 2010.  Dan Lebatard tweeted that he showed up so drunk to an ESPN magazine shoot at age 20(!) that it scared everybody there.

This is a major problem for Cabrera and the Tigers.  I don't see how they can do anything but give him the full Josh Hamilton treatment, complete with handler.  This is clearly not something he can handle doing on his own.

How many times can we say it?

People, don't ever go drinking with White Sox! Ever!

Ever ever ever ever ever ever ever.

White Sox are not your friends. They are evil.

Okay, I don't think he was drinking with Jenks this time. But I'm not discounting it either.

Eeeeeeeeeeevil!

Was Miggy actually driving the car or was it pulled over on the side of the road when the cops found him? If so, having your lambo break down its a bizarre way to get a DUI. Unless there was another guy he "was going to kill"

There are only a handful of teams in the league that would be willing to take on his contract.  The Tigers would, for the most part, get some prospects and money for him.  Given what the bottom of the Tigers line up looks like, they need his production at the top.  He is not the first athlete to have a disease and deserves more help and more chances.  Hell, Donte Stallworth is still playing after killing another human and Charlie Sheen still hasn't entered rehab.  It remains to be seen in what shape or form this will affect the Tigers season.

This is insensitive and stupid. Alcoholism is a disease. Should we ship out players whenever they come down with illnesses? As someone who has struggled with alcohol abuse myself, I sympathize with Miguel. This does not make him a bad person or a terrible representative of Detroit. It makes him a sick man with a need for help. The Tigers should do all they can to get him that help, not ship him out. If they give up on him it is just going to make his disease worse.

It took the support of all of my friends, family, and professors in college for me to quit drinking. It will take similar support for Cabrera but he can do it. Its not easy but it can be done.

He is a danger to others on the road.  Alcolism is not a disease that just happens, a person does it to themselves (and their loved ones) and they could have avoided the problem.  If Miggy want to change, he can certainly buy the support he needs.

There are numerous studies that support a genetic link to alcoholism. I agree that he is a danger to others on the road and should be punished for his actions. However, I believe punishing the behavior is treating a symptom of the disease and not the disease itself. He should face punishment such as a suspended license, fines, jail time, etc. However, the Tigers should also mandate a rehab period and support him while he goes through it. I never said financially support him.

You can feel badly for a person while still not supporting their actions in anyway. To those who have never had to battle addiction you will never understand the battle it is to give it up and give it up for good.

Should he be punished for what he did? Absolutely. Should he be given up on and written off? No. Alcoholism is a disease and numerous studies are now showing a genetic component to it. I am an alcoholic, as were my mother, father, 3 sisters, and my grandfather. It isnt as simple as people make it out to be.

In short, I do not feel bad for people who drive while drunk. I feel bad for people who have this disease and are really struggling with it.
