OT: Boise Loses

Submitted by Vasav on

36-35 @home against TCU. Missed a FG as time expired, TCU went for two with a minute left to take the lead. Patterson talks about how he feels bad considering how much Boise has done for mid-majors, but clearly is overwhelmed with joy. Does Boise drop froom the BCS at large race as well? I think so

The funny thing is, this might work out best for Boise.  If this team had made it to a MCN game and gotten destroyed by LSU or Bama, then I'm not sure the voters ever give them another chance.  This isn't a great Boise team (not like the past couple of years), and I'd rather them get a real chance against the top team for the title, not a process-of-elimination shot.  Maybe next year.

True.  Losing two NFL-caliber receivers has been tough on them.  Kellen is good enough to spread the ball around, but they haven't been as explosive at receiver.  Add in a lot of injuries to the RB position, and it makes things a lot more diffucult for their offense.  Sadly, had they been down by 4 or more I think that they would have had a better chance to win.  Kellen Moore is pretty amazing, and their kicker has never had to make a pressur kick like that.

Everyone has so much hate for Boise lately, and I don't understand it at all. They are a legitimately good team, and all they want is some respect. Is it fear? Because that is the only reason I can think of why my fellow UM fans would root so vehemently against a team that has NOTHING TO DO WITH US. They aren't in our conference, how well they do doesn't affect M at all, there is NO reason to root AGAINST them.

I could compare some of you to the fans of a certain rival team of ours... -.-

Sure, they may be a good team but the problem I have is their demand for respect without earning it.  They played (and beat) one ranked team all year.  That's it.  That to me doesn't earn you a top 5 ranking in the country.  To compare, they're ranked one spot above OK who has played three.  The strength of schedule argument gets played a lot but that's because it's legitimate.  You shouldn't be able to make the BCS championship playing one ranked team all year.  I understand they try to schedule bigger teams and all that but at the end of the day it doesn't matter.  It's not relevant who's fault it is, the facts are they don't play enough quality teams.  People root against them because they feel it's unfair for them to make a BCS without playing anyone and them losing is the easiest way to avoid that controversy.

And to compare a few threads about boise on the day they lose to the MSU thread count is a stretch in my opinion.

In their defense, they keep trying to play top teams, but not many want to play BSU OOC.  They have also even moved to a new conference, trying to improve their SOS, but some top teams have left that conference.  They may even be moving to the Big East to improve their level of competition, but they will still be criticized when the Big East loses some of its teams as well.

At the end of the day, they are a team that has been massively over-achieving, and people still hate them for it.  No they don't play in the SEC, and if they did they would probably not go undefeated.  At the same time, if they were in the SEC they could probably lose 3-4 games and still end up being ranked.  BSU has zero margin for error when it comes to playing in a BCS game.

Boise has to suck it up and never expect a return home game when scheudling OOC. It sucks for them, but BCS teams probably don't want to play on the road in a stadium that only seats around 40,000 when they can play a crappy team at home and make more $$.  And honestly, it's a lose-lose playing Boise St. If you win, it's expected. If you lose, you lost to a midmajor.

BSU may have little margin for error to get to a BCS game in terms of losses. But their opponents provide plenty of margin for error.

To be honest I am kind of upset Boise lost.  Not because I think they belong anywhere near the National Champ game.  But now Houston... YES HOUSTON  is going to get a BCS bowl bid.  A team that gives up 42, 34, and 34 to UTEP, Louisianna Tech, and Rice respectfully.

And I am not joking at all with this question.  They have played exactly 2 teams with a winning record (UCLA and Louisiana Tech who are 5-4) Their combined opponents are 35-61.

UCLA (5-4) North Texas (4-6) Louisiana Tech (5-4) Georgia State (2-7 I-AA) UTEP (4-5) E. Carolina (4-5) Marshall (4-6) Rice (3-7) UAB (3-7) Tulane (2-9).

People bitch about Boise's schedule this is UNACCEPTABLE for a team to even be considered for a BCS Bowl.

The PI on the 4th down play was iffy, but the receiver was being held from the time that the ball was thrown until it hit the ground.  It is hard to tell how catchable the ball would have been without the contact.  TCU could hardly complain about the refs, though, since they were holding badly on their last possession during some key completions.  Still, BSU never should have let it get that far.  The fumble by their running back late in the game was unfortunate.  He was only playing because there have been a number of injuries to their RBs.

Aside from Michigan, though, I have always pulled for the underdogs.  There is something unsavory about seeing fans of teams like Michigan, Alabama and other programs celebrating the losses of a team that has a fraction of the budget, facilities, etc. of those teams.  People always seem to pull for the underdog as long as they don't get uppitty and really challenge the hierarchy.

People also seem to forget that this "terrible" BSU team handed Georgia their asses.  That is the same Georgia team that just crushed Auburn and leads the SEC East.  BSU is not terrible, and I would still like to see them play a quality BCS team in a bowl game, just not the NC (and probably not a BCS one at this point).

Of course - leave it to mgbloggers to pick apart every statement with the eye of a $900/hr. lawyer.  I meant that I generally like to pull for underdogs.  However, if I pulled for TCU over Boise, then I would essentially be rooting for the overachievers to be cut down and the big dogs like LSU and Alabama to have a rematch.

Also, I live in Boise now and like to see the hometown team do well.  I have met a lot of good people associated with the BSU program.

I am glad it happened. So sick of hearing about Boise's home win streak and their invincibility there. They won't be as good when Kellen Moore graduates in May.

The problem I have with Boise's schedule is that you could stick any top 25 team in their place, and that team would probably replicate Boise's record(s).

Crowning Boise St. based on one meaningful game is like saying that Wisconsin should be in the national championship game because they beat Nebraska so convincingly and ran up the score on a bunch of cupcakes.

Feel bad for the kicker, but glad they lost since the 4th down pass interference call was a farce.  The ball wasn't even close to being catchable.

BSU plays 10 tomato cans and two semi-elite teams.  They are 1-1 in their big games.  They would be a 4-4 team in the SEC at best, would sustain at least three losses in the Pac 10 and B1G, and two losses in any of the other three majors.

It's time for BSU to take their ball, go home, and stop whining until next year.
