OT: Bob Stoops to Iowa?

Submitted by Decatur Jack on

Found this on the Interwebs:

Obviously a photoshop. Apparently some Hawkeye fans are hopeful. Would be huge, a Harbaugh-like hire if it happened, and imagine what it would mean for the Big Ten.

(Edit: Not meaning to pass this off as news, but something I found that I wanted to share.)

To be fair, had you posted a link or something with more substance than an Iowa fan learning about the "fill" command in photoshop I think you'd have received a better response.

That said, Stoops wouldn't want to go to Iowa because it would, at best, be a slight downstep for him.  And Iowa fans would absolutely be driven crazy by the same issues he's had at Oklahoma, namely blowing 1-2 games a year.

Iowa isn't the blue blood that OSU is, but I think the UF to OU comparison is legit. I think a good comparison from a school prestige perspective would be Beilema leaving Wisco to go to Arkansas. Obviously, Stoops is a bigger name coach than BB, but in terms of moving down schools, I think its a proportionally equal downward move between Power 5 schools

Meyer had two NC's and was mentioned as a pipe-dream candidate for almost every major opening while he was doing TV.  Stoops is under fire at his school, his NC is far in the rearview mirror and he is a "tier 2" choice for some openings.

I don't think they are close to being on the same level.

Ferentz has an insane buyout, and a long contract.  Seems like Iowa is just happy with 7-5 each year, and losing to a MAC or I-AA team in September.

I call BS this is absolute nonsense. It'll be a cold day in the hell before that would happen. Ferentz will be there till the day he's mummified. That contract he has is ironclad.

I don't see anything about this anywhere. It's also highly unlikely a coach would leave for anywhere only 2 weeks prior to NSD.
Does this even meet the threshold of "rumor"?

Is there a link to anything other than a photoshop?  I mean, if that qualifies as news around here, then I have on good authority that the president of the US is staring in the next Jurassic Park movie as an rocket-totting game warden who has tamed Velociraptors.

Stoops is currently in his 16th season at OU. He’s currently one season into a seven-year, $34.5-million contract he signed in June. The deal does not contain a buyout clause. Stoops is free to leave if he wishes without financial penalty.

He can take any job if the offer is right. I'm kind of surprised Florida didn't go after him.

make the BIG more interesting.

I can't imagine the pile of money Iowa would have to throw at Stoops to make that happen.  Alma mater or not Oklahoma to Iowa is a move down.

Stoops is 168-44 since he took over at Oklahoma.  Only Boise State has won more games in college football during that time frame.

I don't see him leaving for Iowa.  But if he did, I wonder if OU fans would go all West Virginia-losing-RichRod crazy.

Didn't someone do a diary entry explaining how Iowa could fire Ferentz and still come out ahead?  Maybe it was just a discussion thread.

Stoops to Iowa would be great for that program.  They seem to be getting tired of Stoops in Norman, so I wouldn't rule it out.

I wouldn't rule it out either. I read there was serious interest from Stoops about the Michigan job. It seems to be connected to what you mentioned about his relationships in Norman.

It sounds like he might have been a legit plan B candidate.

While it would make the Big Ten much more interesting and probably add another perennial contender to the Big Ten West if all went well, and as much as Iowa fans would probably love to see their school write that $13.3 million or so check for Kirk's buyout as it would be now (and even throw in the $525,000 longevity bonus he'll get on Friday), it is exactly what that Photoshop is - a hope, likely a vain one at best.

Not Harbaugh like.  Stoops like only.  Nothing is like the hiring of Harbaugh at Michigan.  I don't think there will be anything quite like it happening for a long time.
