OT: Bo Pelini a poor sport over '13 WR decommitment

The recent Cornhusker defections seem to getting to ol' Bo Pelini. 2013 WR Dominic Walker decided to flip his commitment to Auburn and got a bitter response:

"It was a very tough decision. They were [mad]. They were very mad," Walker said." But I thought I had to call them like a real man should.

"But yeah, they were mad. Coach Pelini said, 'Best of luck, you're going to need it.' "

Maybe I'm still peeved over last year's NEB game, but I'm starting to feel like karma is swirling pretty hard in Lincoln. Why not just respect the kid's decision and move on? Why be a d*** about it?

Pelini's a good coach, but he seems to be unable to control his temper. The irony is that the kid had originally committed elsewhere and Pelini flipped him to Nebraska.

It has to be frustrating to reel these guys in, and have them change late in the game, but they're kids. Kids do that, and moreover, they need to be free to do that because it's all about their lives.

I respect the young man for calling the coaches. He got a really unfortunate response. The Nebraska AD really needs to have a sit-down with Pelini and set him straight.

If UM and OSU continue to have top 5 classes and Nebraska is just hanging around the top 25, you can make a logical assumption that Nebraska might become closer to a Iowa/MSU program than on an UM/OSU level, which is where they should be.

we have observed him and other coaches (ie b.kelly) act in an unbecoming fashion.  stakes are high in the college football biz.  my sense is he is improving with age , success, improved job security, etc.

college football fans have high/unrealistic expectations- goes with the territory when coaches get paid millions of dollars.

that being said,     go blue--pelini sucks!

However, as a head coach, he needs to be more polished and professional. He's been around long enough to know how the recruiting game works. The latter part of his comment was not going to change Mr Walker's mind, so why say it and risk being featured negatively in an article?

"It's also worth remembering Walker wasn't required to contact the Nebraska coaches at all -- he said he felt he needed to do the right thing after switching his commitment from Vanderbilt to Nebraska in less transparent fashion -- and that his story may force future recruits to reconsider bothering to tell Pelini at all."- from the article

Incidents like this will definitely hurt, at least a little bit, in the long term for Pelini. Granted, recruiting is competitive and can get emotional for recruits and staffs alike, but this kid tried to do the proper thing, I believe, and let him know through some means even though he was not obligated to do so. If Pelini did in fact say those things, then it provides a major disincentive for recruits to be completely open with Pelini about their feelings for Nebraska, as well as negative advertising for Pelini himself. You would think that a coach  would ultimately want to create an open dialogue so - either way - he knows where a recruit stands. It is something that Michigan's staff - I think - is very, very good at doing through their own policies. Pelini is creating a situation where he could potentially get a lot of unpleasant surprises through the years.

but he couldve been a bit more professional it seemed. Its got to be frustrating for coaches to have their recruiting board that says "Need 25 recruits...2 WRs" and you get a commitment and think one of those spots is locked down and taken care of, then the guy backs out on you weeks before signing and day and you have little to no chance of replacing him with someone comparable in that short of a time frame. It could screw up your depth for years and be partially responsible for your job security.

So again, can't blame him for being peeved, but now he gave other coaches ammunition for why they shouldn't go to Nebraska in the first place

Putting Pelini and professional in the same sentence is funny. I'm from Omaha, he is definitely  on the hot seat. Most Nebraskans do not approve of his demeanor. What popularity he has comes from those who are still thankful his name isn't Bill Callahan. But after their performance in the B1G Championship Game, you can't blame anyone for confusing Pelini with Callahan.

I'd be one thing if someone with ironclad job security did this, since the repercussions are unlikely to be significant. But Pelini is walking on thin ice in Lincoln. He's taken his teams to three conference championship games but lost all of them and all of his Nebraska teams have lost 4 games. Nebraska fans are starting to look at Pelini like we looked at Amaker: a decent coach who took a smoking hole in the ground and built it into a respectable program, but not the guy who was going to take the program to the next level.

There have been rumblings for a few years about whether Pelini's continued outbursts, combined with mediocre results, are worth it; the new AD in Lincoln may not think so, barring a big 2013.

I actually think all is fair in recruiting and I can understand any coach getting peeved. These coaches work hard to develop these relationships. He has a right to be pissed and Pelini has good reason to wish him good luck. Besides, none of us know how it was said and in what context and anything else that was said. Many of you are basing this off of one tweet.

And why should Bo's reaction be any different than the many negative reactions that many fans show when a kid decommits. Recrtuiting is emotional, man!

Pelini has done an OK job at Nebraska, but he should probably be a DC.  In today's oversensitive world, a head coach with a temper has to be more of a politician than a football coach.

At DC, a guy like Pat Narduzzi can call his defense "60 minutes of unnecessary roughness" and be praised for it in the media.  As a head coach, a statement like that could turn into an excuse for firing him after a bad year.

Pelini got to two BCS "Championship" games as a DC in four years, and won one of them. I would be tempted to say that the "Peter Principle" applies here, and that he has been promoted to his level of incompetence, but head coach is more his level of mediocrity.  Pelini should bank as much as he can and then be a career DC.
