OT: BJ Penn Loses-So much for Marv Marinovich
Marv Marinovich and his brother might need to realize that their training methods don't exactly make a guy a better fighter as was proven tonight.

Why do the fans boo Silva? He's so much better than everyone else that he's bored.
in the majority of his fights. he doesnt give his 100% and people hate that. in the UFC u want to see the fighters give it their all and try to end the fight as soon as possible. silva ran around the octagon for the last 3 rounds and toyed with maia. i hope he gets wrecked by belfort but i doubt it seeing as hes just too good. sadly we're gonna see him utterly destroy his next opponent. same situation happened before he fought griffin. we saw wat happened to griffin.

The object is to win. Not please everyone. He is in another class compared to the fighters he has faced. Why should he "mix it up" and risk a lucky sucker punch/kick when he can out-quick his opponents and take it on points?
April 10th, 2010 at 10:20 PM ^
in the 5th round the ref was threatening to take away a point cuz he kept running away. im fine with watching a randy couture fight where he just out-wills his opponent by putting them against the fence and wearing them down and then winning on decision from take downs. im not fine with watching silva taunt his opponent and then toy with him after by not finishing when he could have. and u arent risking a lucky "sucker" punch against demian maia who has absolutely no reputable stand up....did u see him against marquardt? no stand up whatsoever. this is coming from a guy who likes maia.
as to "taking it on points", silva has only gone to decision ONCE since entering the UFC. that was my point about him coming out in his next fight like a shark who has smelled blood. he went to decision against leites and then his next fight, after receiving a lot of criticism about not finishing and toying with opponents, he absolutely destroyed forrest griffin. for christ's sake it won beatdown of the year. i, along with many other fans, hate seeing silva fight at 80% and not finish opponents wen he could. my hats off to maia for not quitting and showing some serious heart during the fight and kept swinging throughout the fight.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:46 PM ^
but if it was anything like the Leites match, then I am completely justified in what I said. Leites was in the fetal position for more than half the fight, yet Silva was the one who was booed because he refused to mix it up with someone who frankly seemed afraid to get involved. Sounds like Maia wasn't curling up like a baby but Silva still won in dominating fashion. I can understand why White would be pissed, but that's because he's pushing a product. Silva's only objective is to win, which he did again without any problem whatsoever.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:50 PM ^
I can't even describe how much more apologizing (and he apologized for his entire interview) that the classless idiot Silva should be doing. His performance was an embarassing and the Maia chants were indicative of that.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:51 PM ^
the Leites match. In rounds 4 and 5 Maia was literally stalking Silva around the cage only to have Silva refuse to engage and throw maybe a dozen strikes per round. I would have given rounds 4 and 5 to Maia.
Silva was on the verge of being dominant but seemingly took his foot off the gas anytime there was a chance to push the action. A totally shameful performance.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:55 PM ^
If that's the case I'd soften my stance a bit. I'd also venture to say that if he was to continue to act like he apparently did tonight that he'll pay for it with his pocketbook. I guess there's already talk that White wants to put him on the undercard in his next fight. Maybe that will wake him up.
April 11th, 2010 at 12:06 AM ^
it will all make sense if you see that performance and his antics in the 2nd round (particularly in the context of his *actually* and rather unbelievably running away in round 5).
it was a complete disgrace.
It made the Thales Lietes fight look like fight of the night material.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:27 PM ^
...because he's a jackass. Just because you have some talent doesn't mean that if you act the part of a donkey that others won't recognize it.
Silva showed himself to be a classless idiot in that fight. To be a great fighter you have to respect the sport. Silva has none of that. It will be a pleasure to watch GSP put him on his ass.
and should have retained his belt. 50-45 is just a ridiculous score that came out of NOWHERE. marv solved the best lightweight ever's biggest problem: his conditioning. im expecting BJ to come back and get his belt back in the near future. maynard deserves a shot tho, he'll pry be the #1 contender with BJ vs kenflo for #2.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:38 PM ^
Something along the lines of "three blind mice".
Edgar won the fight, but the 50-45 score was a joke.
I've seen much worse decisions, they usually involve Cecil Peoples.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:02 PM ^
GSP wipe that cocky smirk off Anderson Silva's face. I didn't think he could do it before, but now I think he could.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:12 PM ^
but i just dont see it happening. silva rolls at about 220-230 and GSP is around 185. i dont see silva cutting 50-60 pounds for a fight and being healthy for that. if they fight at a catchweight of 178 i dont see silva losing. silva has much much much better stand up so GSP would be resolved to trying to take him down. he would probably eat a few knees trying to get there. if he does manage to take silva down, the spider would show why he got his name and he'd remind everyone that hes got a black belt in BJJ and neutralize GSP's submission game and possibly catch GSP with his longer limbs(say triangle choke). as much as i'd love to see silva lose after embarrassing one of my favorite MWs, i just dont see it happening.
EDIT: oh and GSP took 5 rounds and went to decision to defeat a top 5-10 WW and had to give it his all the entire fight. silva toyed with a top 5-10 MW for 3 rounds(after dominating him for the first 3) and humiliated him by running away. i just dont see GSP winning.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:25 PM ^
and though I've heard he can roll at 225 or so, Rogan was saying tonight that he was walking around at the 195 range. This would not be out of GSP's range. As for the ground game, Lutter and Hendo looked good vs Silva on the ground. It's been a while since Silva's been on the ground and I think GSP could ground and pound him and maybe submit him. Silva's striking is obviously the wild card here and I don't think GSP has a chance standing with him. GSP is bar none the best wrestler in MMA and could get Silva to the ground. Keeping him there and wearing him down will decide the fight.
Also loved how Dana said Silva would be the first title holder to fight on an undercard in his next bout.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:35 PM ^
GSP doesn't gas after 2.5 rounds and he doesn't have refs threatening to deduct points because he won't engage or runs away. Silva has talent, no question but he doesn't have anything for the Canadian. GSP's olympic calibre wrestling and takedown dominance enable him to grind out a fatigued and bloody Silva in 3 rounds.
Silva's high level Brazilian ju jitsu is ineffective as GSP strikes him about the head.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:39 PM ^
Yeah you aren't blatantly a Silva hater who is speaking in terms of hope here rather than what might actually happen. Oh yeah you aren't Canadian either, surprised you'd be so gung-ho for GSP.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:47 PM ^
That said, we value insightful analysis up here. GSP's wrestling is now pretty much off the chart, technically. I wasn't so much a GSP fan, actually, until I watched him clean out the division. Maybe GSP is what it takes to motivate Silva but, like I said, it's going to be difficult for Silva and his ju jitsu while eating elbows for 3 rounds.
I will agree that I don't like Silva. I respect his talent but he's clearly showing himself (I assume you saw the fight tonight) as a totally classless idiot.
I suspect he also likes tUofOSU.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:59 PM ^
he cant like ohio state. they just dont fit. probably a bama fan.
i dont think GSP can get close enuf to silva without eating some serious damage to take down silva.
April 11th, 2010 at 12:18 AM ^
I have no particular use for GSP or Silva (BJ fan, but I think he had an injury today - something was wrong). But GSP doesn't go out to embarrass his opponent and bore the fans. I have to respect Silva's ability, but not his lack of class, performance, attitude, pathetic clowning in the ring, etc., etc., etc.
And this is coming from a Roy Jones fan - show off out there all you want, but then DO SOMETHING.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:37 PM ^
but how did both of those fights end? rear naked and triangle. i think silva is just too big for GSP to deal with.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:41 PM ^
Silva ducked fighting Hendo a second time which partly led to Hendo moving to (god help him) Strikeforce.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:09 PM ^
GSP GSP GSP GSP
April 10th, 2010 at 11:35 PM ^
Just putting this out there - he may not be the best fighter, but he is the most fun to watch.
April 10th, 2010 at 11:40 PM ^
non stop action. idk about the most fun(chris leben is my personal favorite) but hes certainly up there as a crowd pleaser.

I started watching UFC about 5-6 Guida fights ago, and had convinced myself he was the "Carpenter" because when he fights, he's out there building the house, brick by brick until the other guy is exhausted and out of ideas. It was considerably more recently that Rogan mentioned that he, of course, had been an actual carpenter.
I blame the beer I tend to consume while watching UFC events.
April 11th, 2010 at 12:19 AM ^
thought that he called himself the carpenter because he wanted to be thought of as jesus....it was the hair! hahahaha
All he had to do was stay healthy and none of this would have happened.
One thing Joe Silva and Dana must do is STOP matching Anderson up with guys who have ZERO stand up. Every single time he gets a guy not a threat on the feet he loses all interest in the fight.
Much like GSP, Silva has also completely cleaned out MW and really does not have a threat to scare him.
Personally I think we should all hope for Shogun to beat Machida (again) and then you got a Anderson/Shogun match up for the LHW title. This might be the only way to really interest Silva to bring his A game when he thinks a guy is an actual threat!
I also think that some of these guys are forgetting they are the challengers for the title. It's their job to go get the belt and it's Silva's job to keep it. Really not his fault no one wants to engage with him. Why should he put himself in harms way and fight the challengers fight.
Like Ric Flair always said, "To be the man, you have to beat the man" and so far none of these challengers are willing to go in the cage and take it from Silva!
I was really looking forward to him fighting Silva. Hopefully he gets his shot.

just read the marv marinovich article in ESPN magazine last night about his training of Penn.
why is this ironic? seems pretty normal that there would be an article about it the day of the big title fight.
was in the ESPN mag last month(?)
