OT: Biogenesis baseball suspensions

Submitted by TheBlueBaller on
Just listening to 971 The Ticket and heard that A-Rod apparently has been offered a deal. He can sit out the rest of this year and all of next year, returning the year after that. He had until tonight to accept. If he declines, MLB will seek lifetime ban. MLB supposedly isn't going to deal with the rest of the involved players until they finish with A-Rod. They wanna deal with the big guys and then have a blanket suspension for the rest of the guys, obviously including Jhonny Peralta. There currently is a deal in the works where the other players, including Jhonny, would be suspended for 50 games with no chance to appeal.

There is nothing that can happen in the recruiting world that deserves the phrase "today of all days" and requires tuning out literally the entire rest of society.

Work on some perspective.  This thread is infinitely more useful than 100 posts in a Hello thread going OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD, one of which I'm sure would be yours.

Exactly this. From Michael Weiner, the head of the MLBPA:

"I can tell you, if we have a case where there really is overwhelming evidence that a player committed a violation of the program, our fight is going to be that they make a deal," Weiner told the Daily News. "We're not interested in having players with overwhelming evidence that they violated the [drug] program out there. Most of the players aren't interested in that. We'd like to have a clean program."

He has never been suspended before or warned. I highly doubt a lifetime ban would ever hold up in arbitration.

As for Peralta, it will be interesting because no one knows exactly the evidence MLB has against each individual player. Some reports earlier said that none of the Biogenesis documents could actually link Peralta to PED use. Maybe more evidence has turned up since Bosch began cooperating with the investigation.

Yankees want to dump him and MLB wants the Yankees to have that money.  He has absolutely no love for the Yankees whatsoever and my guess is that he will take any necessary action to fight this and draw it out as long as possible.  A-Rod is washed up and he knows it but he is also a business himself, and a damn good one.  He wants the Yanks to pay him his money and if anybody can it is him.  A-Rod is the type of guy who will take the whole team and the sport down with him if he can and he may have the chops and wallet to do it.

If the league, the owners and the players association had not let this go on, we wouldn't be here today. After what the powers that be did to the sport, A-Rod is small potatos.

Its consistently lying about it, misleading investigators, attempting to destroy evidence and the fact that he apparently takes advice from a team of donkeys based on his actions the last few weeks (and years for that matter).  He is dead in the water.  He should take his lumps and try to collect 60 something million from the Yankees and never play again.

Ryan Braun lied about it as well last year, and he got a 65 game slap on the wrist. Braun called into question the integrity of collector who ended up losing his job. A-Rod is not the first player to lie about their PED use and mislead investigators. In fact, it has been pretty commonplace among most caught using PEDs. But I don't think I have ever seen anyone get a lifetime ban on a first conviction.

Braun is pathetic and has a whole lot of apologizing to do But Braun was never convicted in the first place. So technically his first conviction resulted in him settling for a 65 game suspension. If you believe the news reports a-rods transgressions are on a whole other level. Maybe the lifetime ban is the stick they are threatening to get him to pull a Braun and settle for a year long ban.

A-Rod has never been convicted and that is the point. A-Rod has never even tested positive unlike Braun. This would be his first conviction as well. Braun may have never been convicted, but he did test positive and only had his case dismissed on a technicality, and in retrospect, he clearly lied and misled during the process.

Yea whats getting lost in this is that the Yanks could very well have signed him to the worst contract...ever...(no but seriously), pay him in his prime, and then get that contract axed in time for the offseason to go aquire whatever else they want. Im not saying it's likely that he gets a lifetime ban and they get outta this, but it sure is looking possible. All the more reason to hate em

Braun was a mini Lance Armstrong in his denial of his previous doping, and he caved pretty instantly. Whatever MLB's has from Biogenesis is most likely very damning evidence. I'll be shocked if players don't take whatever deals they can.

Or do a lot of pitches end up improving after multiple minor league stints and a year away from the game when they're 37?

But if he's named in Biogenesis or if he's still using PEDs it won't surprise me.

As a Cubs fan, baseball season ended for me in March. In fact, it might not start up again until 2015 (we'll see how much selling the Cubs do) but that career arc isn't natural, nor is another resurgance. I'll just say that at this point I'm jaded especially when there are Clemens like career resurgances for 35+ year old athletes

ARod doesn't stand a chance, but I'm interested in seeing when MLB will go after players like Peralta and Nelson Cruz (if they are involved) who play on contenders.  50 games now means these players are back for the playoffs, but pretty soon you'll be really be hurting contenders with no easy way to find stopgaps.

The Tigers have 104 games in the books, meaning 58 games are remaining. I'd like to know the fate of our shortstop asap, because to have him for a few "break the rust off" games before the playoffs begin would be extremely beneficial. Does DD go out and grab another ss as a stop-gap? I don't know if I want Santiago out there for the remainder of the regular season, although Infante coming back at 2nd base would upgrade the infield. I think the new kid is doing fine over there at 2nd base for the time being, I say leave him there and move Omar to short.
