OT: Bill King on Rivals

Submitted by psychomatt on

This is not a marketing plug; not associated in any way. But I started checking out additonal places over the past month to follow all the expansion stuff and Bill King on Rivals Radio (Sirius Ch 122, XM Ch 143) is absolutely the best college sports talking head ever. He knows his shit across sports and is also really entertaining. Think of him as the anti-Pat Forde. I'm pretty sure the first thing he does in the morning does not involve checking his hair.

FWIW, I also started checking Burnt Orange Nation and it is one of the funniest blogs I've ever read, Yeah, its TX, but if I had to tailgate with a bunch of TX dudes it would be these guys.

daily on Sirius - He has some really good points, and there are some other things I really hate about his perspective. He loves the BCS and thinks that it is more fair than a playoff system. He thinks that the small schools have a better chance of making money and looking good in the current system than a playoff. Since a small school can't make it into the BCS championship game ever under the current system, I wonder what this dude smokes sometimes...

He is interesting to listen to though, and he has Phil Steele, Tom Dienhart, and a slew of good writers who come on the show and help answer questions. I actually get more out of his guests than him, but it's all good.  I just like shows about college football, really.

Started listening to rivals radio and yes, he's good. King was probably the first national radio guy to pick up on the Big Ten isn't taking piss poor academic schools into the conference during the early days of the expansio hysteria. Also like Paul Finebaum in the pm... he's an Alabama partisan through and through, but the way he just lets the crazies from the SEC go off on his show and then subtlely mocks them afterward is just priceless. If you just tune to him for 5 min you'll think he's the slappiest slap dick for the SEC around, but he's kind of like Limbaugh in a way where he sometimes makes his point by letting people be as absurd as they possibly can be. Yesterday was a good example where he basically alternated hard core SEC fans and texas fans calling to argue whether the Alamo was really a heroic encounter or just a bunch of white guys fighting over slavery, which then inevitably turned into a Civil war revisionism session.... hilarious but slightly disturbing.

Bill King is great.  He lives in SEC country (Tennessee), but he does a pretty good job covering schools across the other major conferences.  Jason on the show is from the Detroit area and is a Michigan fan as well.

Favorite clip from the show: "LSU is a 800 pund gorrilla with a chainsaw for a penis"

I listen to the reply in the morning on the way to work and most days UM is mentioned. He does have a RR crush but is constantly saying he's not going to work out in AA and is a lock to go to the SEC
