OT: Big 12 going to new replay system due to CMU loss

Submitted by Wolverine In Iowa 68 on

Per MLive, Mike Gundy's second question at Big 12 media days (and let's be honest, the first question HAD to be about his righteous mullet) was about the CMU loss.

He explained that based on that game, the Big 12 is going to an all-new replay system to avoid a similar "situation" happening again in the future.

wait, I understand that according to the rule book they should have won that game. But wasn't the rule in question a terrible rule to begin with? I'm sure my memory is off a bit, but didn't an OKState player commit a penalty on the supposed last play and the rule book says the game should have ended regardless? I don't recall the details, just that the rule was terrible and OKState was pathetic for even arguing for that win.

Yes, I believe the QB was called for intentional grounding because he threw the ball away as the clock ran out with no receiver remotely close to the pass. Technically the rule book states that there should not be an additional play because the penalty included loss of down and was committed by the offense.

I think it is a dumb rule that would have awarded OSU a win for being dumb(instead of throwing the ball away, how but just kneel?). Even though the game shouldn't have ended the way it did, it certainly seemed like it had the proper ending to me.

Because the penalty included loss of down and was committed by the offense. Still seems like a dumb rule though. The penalty also occurred on 4th down, so I am not sure what down they lost. Frankly, I feel like OSU got exactly what they deserved.

According to the rule book, Central Michigan should have never been awarded possession of the ball. As FOX Sports’ rules expert Mike Pereira pointed out, because the penalty was on the offense and included a loss of down, an extra play should not have been added. Per Pereira, according to Rule 3-2-3. "The period is not extended if the foul is by the team and possession and the penalty includes loss of down."

"Well, we've been trendsetters in a lot of different ways at Oklahoma State," Gundy said. "We went to a 4-team playoff, maybe based on what happened to our team a couple years ago and unfortunately, we're going to a different replay system maybe based on what happened to our team a year ago.  And I’m pretty sure we were the first team in the BIG12 to say “fuck it – we’re just not going to even try and play defense anymore.  Let’s make the game first one to 100 points wins!”

I do like the idea of a centralized location making the decision. Especially if they are not allowed to watch the games as they wait for requests to come in. That should help elimiate any chance of letting the home crowd influence the call.

They should also be limited to 45 seconds to make a decision so as not to disrupt the game flow. If you can't make a difiitive call after watching 5-6 different angles in 45 seconds, go with what was called on the field and keep playing.

looks like the loss to CMU really gave him an achy, breaky, butt. Right or wrong no matter how much you cry about it, the result will not change. Next time don't let the game be that close where the refs can mess it up......Stupid refs when they heard about Oklahoma state getting robbed, they decided to retaliate.... Wrong OSU
