OT: Better Call Saul /K-Strass Yo Yo master

Submitted by Zoltanrules on

Breaking Bad was one of my favorite shows ever and I never thought any spin off could approach it. Last week's Season Premier of Better Call Saul reminded me of how much I like that show almost as much. The clever writing, risk taking, and great characters make for must see TV as Slippin Jimmy become Saul Goodman (and then Cinnabon Guy).

I chuckled last week at Mark Proksch (from The Office) who played the drug dealer,hummer-driving (license plate: "Playuh"), aka Kenny "K-Strass" Strasser, the Yo-Yo master who pranked morning news shows across the country in 2010 with his masterful skills and environmental wisdom. If you think Andy Kaufmann was funny check this out. If you are too young to know who he is Google him and "Man on the Moon".

It's blasphemy to say, but I like Saul better. As much as I loved BB, every time his wife or his kid came on the screen, I knew I was in for 10-15 minutes of boring contrived family crap.
I don't see those lapses here. While the highs may not be as high, those lulls make re-watching BB unbearable for me.

I agree. I feel like Breaking Bad is the sensationalized version and Better Call Saul is the realistic version of the the same sort of character progression. The fact that they exist in the same world and you know while watching Better Call Saul about his eventual relationship with Walter White, makes the parallell all the more pronounced. I love it.

To each their own, but BB was my favorite show. I can't argue with your reasoning.

My only issue with 'Saul is that I'm not a big fan of the actress playing his significant other. I think she's rather boring, possibly a below average actor, and for some reason her voice bothers me. I'll even go as far as it's a bit distracting. That character seems a bit poorly cast.

Other than that, really enjoying the show. Still waiting for some prequel camios. Maybe Walter/Skylar in the produce section at the grocery store or seeing Gus Fring getting his fade hair did around town.

I binge watched Breaking Bad last year and I'll be honest, it didn't do much for me. I think it is a good show, but so many people made it sound like it's the best show ever, which is so far from the truth. The best show on TV right now is Game of Thrones and nothing is even close.

I agree with you. I did the same thing this past summer and I didn't think it was even close to the best show I've ever seen. It was a good show. Probably top 10, but the way you hear people talk about it I expected way more. To me it is light years from GoT, mad men, sopranos (my 3 favorite shows)

but it progresses really slowly, kind of boring at times. No where near the same drama and intensity as BB.

but at least it took place in a secret underground mega meth lap run by a high school teacher who had cancer.  Nothing cool like that happens on BCS.

The best thing that happened on saul is how he and mike recovered all that money from the people who were hiding it under their sink.  enough said.

I think you went into this show with some weird expectations. The show was never pitched or presented that it would be the Breaking Bad drama level. In fact it was presented as very different from that.

You're looking for something that was never intended from this show. It's developing the back story to how Saul came to be. The whole reason for the show is the part you're asking them to gloss over.

It's your opinion, so no neg for it, but I disagree. I enjoy the show quite a bit. I also think the show will start to develop more this season. This was episode 1 of season 2 which is episode 11. By comparison "Fly" was episode 30 of Breaking Bad. They've established the foundation for his character now they're starting the transformation.

Breaking Bad didn't really blossom until the later seasons in my opinion, so this doesn't surprise me that much.

I happen to be an attorney, so I suppose I could enjoy it more for that reason too.

I eaglerly anticipated S2:E1 of Better Call Saul...and then was disappointed.  The NYT review resonated with me:  when are we going to see SAUL.  So far, we're seeing a lot of Jimmy.

Regardless, I'll continue to watch.  I like the writing, enjoy the characters, and am still interested in the story.
