OT: best way to set up a Go fund me page ?

Submitted by AVPBCI on

I normally would not be doing something like this

But I am looking into setting up a go fund me page or some page to help somebody in need.

I have a friend whose daughter has Angelman's Syndome ( a messed up disease to say the least) . Her daughter is 5 years old, and the father of the child passed away about 18 months ago. I don't know the best way to go about setting this up, and don't want any tax consequences or anything like that on my end for doing so.

Anyways, the family has 2 kids 11, and 5 ( the 5 year old has angelman's syndrome). SO mom is doing everything, Work, taking the 5 year old to the hospital ( 28 doctors and counting, child currently in casts,) and also going to school.

My friend, the mother, could use some help in terms or a ramp for the house for the wheelchair, some things around the house for the daughter with angelmans, and may have to get a better van soon as the minivan she uses to transport the child in the wheelchair is getting old ( 2000) and i know the brakes are going.

The child will never be able to talk and has some severe physical limitations that will be their til the end. Pretty sad to say.

Anyways I see people on here with funding stuff and other interesting technological stuff, so I figure this would be the place to turn to to see if any info could be provided.

Any info to get something going from those knowledgeable in here let me know.

Most appreciated.

Thanks and GO BLUE

Did anyone see the pot growing family who set up a fake GoFundMe page for a slain police officer?  This kind of thing gives all the other worthwile funds a bad name and keeps people skepticle enough to prevent the giving level they would normally provide.

Thats why i came here, i see really stupid stuff posted for those sites and pages, I honestly have never set anything like this up, so no clue on the best way to go about it. plus i want it to be respectable in terms of people knowing the funds are going to the family.

I mean i see Nelly getting his tax debt paid off and other crazy gofund me things. I figured the most knowledgeable people would be here first.

I don't have any clue on how the best way or best page or whatever to set this up.

Like the guy said, just go to the site and start one. If you are asking for alternatives there are a few good ones out there.

There is caringbridge.org which is part of gofundme. I have seen youcaring.com, indiegogo.com and fundly.com.

I cannot recall the site. Sorry.  Gofundme.com I think takes 10% My cousin has cancer and they set up a page for him.  I just mailed him a check and told others to do the same since I would rather he received 100%

crowdrise.com is a great company and they are headquartered in Royal Oak. If you call them they may work with you on a personal level.

Also, sadly this is an example of why life insurance is so important.

I'll second the life insurance thing. I was so hesitant because I just didn't want to deal with it or I thought it was going to be a total pain in the ass; it was really pretty easy, you can get $500k for a 20 year term for around a buck and a quarter a day, so expense isn't an excuse, especially if you get it while you're young-ish and healthy-ish.

If you have a child, hell, if you're married, YOU NEED TO DO IT.

(Disclaimer: I am not an insurance salesman, I generally don't care what happens to any of you but I just don't want you to be a dick and leave your families with nothing.)

There are loads of  term life plans that are very difficult to actually get any money from. If you (or any elderly people in your family) get life insurance, be sure to do some research. My Wifes aunt ended up getting about $25,000 on what was supposedly a $1,000,000 policy because the name of the policy didn't match the content of it.

Basically, her husband would have had to get struck by lightning while getting trampled by a cow in the middle of a tornado to get the full payout. Luckily, they were OK financially and thr cost wasn't some huge expense, but even so: watch out.

I'm worth way more dead than I am alive.  The importance of life insurance really cannot be overstated for someone that has kids.  My dad died when I was very young, and his insurance policy allowed my mom to stay home for the next decade.

I'm up to about 650k now, with an additional AD&D of 300k.  I'm just under 40 and it costs me almost nothing.

I would never never donate if I knew Gofundme would be involved. Just set up your own website (there's lots of websites that make it easy) we a Paypal link (they take 2.9%) and info how to send money via Cash App, Venmo, snail mail etc.

If these people are near and dear to your heart and will need help for a long time consider a foundation in their name so people can donate tax free.
