A new one but a good one. Outside of Michigan? Rock Chalk, Jay Hawk
is almost as lame as our continued use of we own penn state.
"We own Penn State" is pretty clever. It just doesn't apply anymore. "You suck" is just dumb. We need to be more creative than that.
I especially love the you suck chant when we're down by three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, although some people then started chanting we suck, which is even worse.
That's the point. "We Own Penn State" is us making fun of their inane "We Are Penn State".
We no longer own Penn State, though.
That's not really the point in my mind. Also, we do own Penn State in the game of life, so football and volleyball aside, I'm still cool with it.
How's that not creating our own? It's witty and typical Michigan arrogance. That's what makes it good in my book.
BTW, we didn't create most of the hockey chants. Those were also "stolen" from Cornell I believe (someone can prob confirm or correct the school).
What's lame is the Athletic Department actually buying into the "We are..." crap.
I agree that the PSU one is clever, but the Maize Rage beat it to death. Not only do we not currently own them, the Maize Rage used it at the start of every game. We ought to just save it for a couple years and use it when we actually play them.
They chanted it whenever the guys in charge of the PA system played Zombie Nation, which happened to be at the beginning of every game. It's fun and witty and doesn't really get old to me. If anything it's "'We Are Penn State' is stupid and they chant it nonstop. Let's mock them."
I generally chant "We're NOT Penn State" which is both factual and a comment on the poor chioces made by the canned music guy. It sometimes gets a laugh.
For a team who is desperately in need of any bowl game this year, I was hoping we could stop the "you suck"' chant. We should just come up with ANYTHING else to say when we stop 'em on third down. What did they chant before "you suck?" I have been to games every year since 85 - but I don't remember. Plus the "wolverine claw" is a rip off of the tomahawk chop. Let's be original and come up with something. Getting the students to follow suit might take an act of God, though...
IIRC, band members used to chant "Ah, yeah!" at the end. Most students didn't chant anything.
If we're going to chant something, let's think of something remotely clever. We're Michigan. We can do a little better than that.
Why not just "Go Blue"
The story I was told was that years ago, the students did a "chopping" arm motion which was intended to mock the referee's First Down arm motion, thus making fun of the other team for not having actually gained a first down. However, with the popularity of the tomahawk chop from Florida State and the Atlanta Braves they switched to the "claw" you see today.
That could be total BS, but that's what I was told.
When Wil Cordero played for the White Sox, I saw Boston fans chant
"Wil Cor-dero...Beats his Wife"....repeat over and again
At a Columbia-Penn game, the crowd had dueling taunts:
* Penn kids to Columbia kids: "SUNY-Harlem" (said with a pause and claps)
* Columbia kids to Penn kids: "safety school"
The kids at Northwestern taunt the opposition with a cheer that awaits empirical testing:
"That's all right, that's okay - you'll be working for us someday"
***THIS IS A TRUE STORY***
My orthapedic doctor in the chicago area was a NW swimmer and then went to medical school at NW. So when I walked in with my Michigan t-shirt on, I thought he was going to give me som business. Turns out he says, "MICHIGAN! ARE YOU GOING THERE!?!?!" Confused, I reply with a disconcerted yeah. He follows up with, "Man, I went to medical school with a lot of Michigan undergrads, they were so smart and so hardworking- I have three sons and I'm making at least one of them go to Michigan. I fell in love with the place just by working with its alumni"
SO BAM! TAKE THAT NORTHWESTERN AKA BOREWESTERN (that's how their students described it to me when I visited)
That's awful.
Oh Penn...They may as well get it right... It would be CUNY Harlem, not SUNY Harlem.
We need to come up with some good chants
...where football fans could learn something from football fans.
awesome. I listened to the Northern Ireland "let's all do the bouncy" and "away in the manger . . . Healey!" and the french chants. A homegrown version could be a great new tradition at the Big House, Crisler, and Yost.
...just replace Cockney with Buckeye, Sparty, etc.
Fat Cockney b*stard,
You're just a fat Cockney b*stard,
Fat Cockney b*stard,
You're just a fat Cockney b*stard...
Sung to the tune of:

My friend and I started this one in the student section. Here's to hoping we can chant this after some big ten opponents this year.
I don't like you suck, particularly when a team is beating us and we still chant 'you suck' if they have to punt one time.
My vote would be for "ugly parents" and "see-ya" at Michigan Hockey games.
Dude no way! Me and my friend started the Rich Rodriguez chant! Stop trying to take credit for it!
[/sarcasm]
AWWWWWWWWWWWW....It just keeps getting worse doesn't it?
I know I'm late to the party but damn, that was beautiful. I have a feeling we'll be doing that again this year.
florida state's war chant is my favorite outside michigan
IIRC, that was Alabama's first win against Auburn in five or six years. Hopefully we can see that kind of a score against Ohio State soon on our way to a BCS bowl game.
Before I die, I want to go to a game in Tuscaloosa
Night game in Baton Rouge is my top SEC priority. I don't think there's anything like it.
They play PSU and MSU. How about UM?
rammer jammer is beyoind awesome. i've never been to a non-Big 10 game but i'd love to go down to Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge for a game.
Die-lith-eee-um. The other schools will have no idea why we are chanting it each time he lights them up for 6.
Michigan hockey chants >> Michigan football chants
Hey everyone, taking an idea from Bill Simmons, I made a twitter account called "MichiganChants" and thought it'd be interesting to see if there'd be enough interest to channel chants during games through this account. If enough of the student section was involved, it could pretty damn loud and could be pretty fun too. If anyone wants to join I can put up a link.
This is absolutely amazing
