OT: Best Slam Dunk Contest Since Carter-McGrady?

Submitted by BursleyBaitsBus on

Anyone watch last night? I just caught the highlights but wow, did Gordon impress.

Lavine ended up winning again, but this dunk has to be the highlight of the night. Plenty thought it should have been a tie between the two players.

Agree with those that think Gordon got robbed. This dunk in the embedded video above should have ended it.  The still shot alone is mind boggling.

But yeah, best contest ever in my opinion.

It was the best dunk contest I've seen. I remember Vince Carter in 2000 but I only remember Carter, I don't remember any of the other dunks. This takes the cake because of the incredible back and forth between Lavine and Gordon.

I think Gordon was robbed though. Lavine's first dunk in the final round was not a 50. At the very least they should've left it at a tie after the first tiebreaker.

Needless to say I hope both are already brainstorming new ideas for next year.

It was probably the best dunk contest, period. However, the older stuff is always given more value bc it's old. Not only were both of those guys cashing in 50 after 50, but most were done on the first attempt.

At least to me, that was far and away one of the best in a while, and I would tend to agree with the camp that thinks Gordon probably has a good argument for being the winner of that particular contest. The sit-down dunk really surpassed LaVine's ability to fly and LaVine can fly like few others. Totally subjective on my part, of course.

Both LaVine and Gordon were sensational. After all these years, they somehow made the dunk contest innovative and exciting again. And wow, what hops!

Easily the best I've seen. It was funny how during the 3-point contest the broadcast crew kept talking about how they should move the dunk contest up and make the 3-point contest the marquee event of the night only for that to happen.

I'm old enough to remember the great Jordan and Dominique Wilkins' dunk contest. While Vince Carter challenged that classic, no contest could top the battle of Jordan/Wilkens. It was incredible and the first one that really brought something completely new to the game/genre.

Until this year, which was better. This year was insane. It was so original. So explosive. So consistently great. The best couple dunks didn't even go to the winner. I didn't watch it last night and just watched it on replay minutes ago. I laughed and yelled out loud like no 45 year old should do watching a dunk contest all by himself.

Instant classic!

Shaq screwed him, gave him a 9 when it was a 10. Should have won, one of the most original and athletic dunks since Jordan's foul line dunk. Need new judges who are not stuck in the past.

On a side note. Tom Brady for President.

I actually had no problem with Shaq's judging - I liked his "no 10 if you need multiple tries" rule. I do think Gordon got screwed on his last dunk, that was incredible.

Gordon was robbed. That dunk over the mascot was ridiculous. Levine had good dunks but they weren't original enough to beat Gordon. Plus the athleticism of Gordon was better than Levine. Gordon is a bigger dude and can jump out of the gym.

Best dunk contest in a very very long time.

Levine performed two of the most famous dunks of all time, at the same time. Carter won on a between the legs dunk and Jordan's free throw line dunk turned into a cultural movement. Levine made it look easy apparently. Regardless, both of them showed a ton originality and athleticism.

The skills challenge was very entertaining with Karl Anthony-Towns and Isiah Thomas in the championships. The 3 point competition was awesome. And the dunk contest was amazing.

All around great night for the NBA.

Not sure there was one with better dunks. Unreal. Levine's dunks were so graceful and fluid. But Gordon's were more memorable. Made me feel 15 watching it.

I thought Gordon should've won but Levin makes it look so effortless that I wonder if I held that against him. His toss, reverse from behind the basket gave me a meh feeling but it was damn slick the more I watched it.

I thought Gordon got robbed, the dunks with the mascot were unbelievable, and his last dunk did not deserve a 47 (and Levine's didn't deserve a 50). But yes, best contest since Carter-McGrady, although I'm not sure either Levine or Gordon were at 2000 Vince level.

Best ~contest~ I've ever seen. Aaron Gordon did things I've never seen an NBA caliber athlete do. Zach Lavine copied James White for about half of his attempts, however.
Originality wins, I'd have given it to Gordon.
