OT - Best non Michigan gift you received this year.

Submitted by Honest Abe on
I figured we could use something else to talk about after reading that most recent post (holy shit). Anyways, my best non UofM gift was Ron White tickets for 2/24 at Michigan Theater. I have been warned about going to the theater, but Ron White is hilarious and it should be a good time. What did you guys get?

if you are just interested in the ethnicity part, probably not. it's cool to look at once in awhile, but it's a snapshot from thousands of years ago and you can't do much with it.

The bigger value, IMO, is connecting with others (3rd cousins, 4th cousins, etc) to confirm your family tree and share stories.

If you aren't willing to put in a little effort about your basic family tree, or to message others the value of your test results will be diminished.

Most likely getting the Scott Flex 8-6 in 4WT. Right now I'm using a cheaper rod and reel combo that was around $200.

Fly fishing isn't just a phasefor me so I feel like I should by some better gear. I was able to test cast the flex and it is awesome at mid distance (30-40 ft) which is what I tend to cast the most in the Eastern Sierras.

I should break out my vice right now. I haven't done that at all this year.

is that a click and pawl reel? If you take care of the gear, they should last a long time. Which reminds me that I should probably clean my fly line.

I think some of the older gear looks awesome. Last time I went out there was an old guy using an old glass rod and an old school pflueger Medalist reel.

it is old and beat, but still works just fine.  and fwiw, my first fly rod was a fiberglass rod that my grandfather gave me 50 yrs ago...and i used it with a hook and worm.  no worries about your old glass rod and pfluegger reel.  it is nice to have gear you like but the bottom line is that you can roll cast for about 90% of the fish you want to cast at, and the fish don't care what name is on the rod/reel.  as they say, tight lines, ken.

Have you had a chance to fully test them? How well do those stay on?

I've tested one that my coach had and it was really annoying since it was the kind you strap to your goggles. The thing would never stay put unless you tighten your googles to an uncomfortable level.

I would look into getting those if they would stay in place when I do flip turns or push off the wall.

I use fairly basic goggles but the key is 2 head straps, I find it very easy to aggrange the headphone with the 2nd strap for extra stability. I will say I don't use it for more intense masters swimming, but if I want to get in a easy mile, it works great!

$50 worth of gas gift cards.

As for Michigan gifts (didn't participate in the other thread), the favorite M thing I got was a tie between the new Jordan vest and this bag.

I've needed a duffel bag for a long time and I got this best one imaginable.

That's a pink Michigan lanyard I got my gf.

I bought her a ton of Michigan stuff for Chrisitmas. Every day she wakes up in her room at turns a little more Maize and Blue. Just look at her dog-

For those of us who haven't had the privilege of knowing why you have such disdain for a guy you likely only know from this blog, why such hate for WD?  It is a passion of yours.  Really an odd and unhealthy passion, but your passion.  I, personally, would love to know.

Thanks.
