OT: Best new music you have discovered in the last year
Judgement free zone here. Just curious what new music everyone here has been listening to, and what about that band do you enjoy.
The only new band ive had any real interest in has been Silversun Pickups. Mostly because i have always had a thing for rock bands that use alot of distortion to create an emotional layer to their music. They arent ground breaking artists or anything, just remind me of listening to older Smashing Pumpkins a little bit.
Now your turn, give me some of your personal new favorites. Hopefully we can all broaden our musical horizons a little bit.
American Authors, Lindsey Sterling...

They said the last year, not 2011

I just discovered Mutemath and Amberlin in the last year. The songs are older, but it meets the OP's ask.

Just in time to see Anberlin retire!

I saw them open up for Hawthorne Heights (I was in high school, don't judge me) about 11 years ago. I enjoyed their set more than I did HH's.
took me to see them live and wasn't feeling it. I couldn't tell her lol
Lindsey Sterling. I don't quite get the dancing, but she can play!

I used to use http://www.themusicninja.com when I was in school and had free time to find new music. They hit most genres
Chris Stapleton and Adam Wakefield (The Voice)
definitely Stapleton. Good choice.
definitely check out The Steeldrivers. They are a bluegrass band and he used to be their lead singer. Their old stuff is pure.
Second that. Steel drivers had a great sound.

Yes! All Chris Stapleton fans should definitely check out Steeldrivers! And not just all you NPR Country fans who turn their noses up at actual Country Radio artists.
i haven't listen to anything new in over a decade. i stick with 70's 80's and 90's for the most part. might find something worth checking out with this thread.
Im always in search for something new to listen too. Ive been a little stagnant in finding anything i like lately.
Ill go back and youtube all the suggestions and hopefully find a few gems to add to the playlist.
70's and early 80's Rock for me. I'm starting to listen to Alternative music from the last 10 years. My kids help me find good music.

There was so much new and innovative music being made back then across multiple genre's. Grunge, techno, ambient, all of it was great. Even most of the pop music was good.
Fuck. I'm getting old.
the stark difference VB between early 90's music to late 90's music is crazy. the early years was amazing and music changing. the last 3-4 years was boy bands and pop garbage.
There's always good music being made. You just need to know where to look. There was some great stuff made in the late 1990s. It just wasn't the stuff you heard on the radio most of the time.
Like Radiohead.
Radiohead came out in the early 90's
I'm a music junkie and it's been dry the last few years. Very little I've heard since 2013 has so much as peaked my interest.
Have you checked out My Bloody Valentine ever? Not new and a bit out there but awesome stuff.
A Canadian band called Mother Mother.
I discovered them from a rather mediocre cover of a Pixies song they did, but their own original music really grew on me.
Catfish And The Bottlemen
I have to say I wasn't thoroughly impressed with either of their studio albums at first, they were just ok at best. But I got the chance to see them live earlier this month, and they have a whole new energy at a live gig. Made me rethink my whole opinion of them.
Could not agree more. Actually, I was lucky enough to see their first U.S. show at it was amazing. First release was just great - such a throwback. I've had a hard time getting into the last release.
I was going through some old comps I'd download forever ago, and came across a song I really liked by an artist named "Lady Saw." So I looked her up, and to my astonishment she is a highly-acclaimed artist with like 12 studio albums and known as "the queen of dancehall." So, it was kind of embarrassing that I had never heard of her until maybe six or eight weeks ago. But better late than never, I suppose.
My wife digs the Silversun Pickups, BTW. Solid act, though not really my style of music.
If you like dancehall, check out Gully Bop. Here is a link to a freestyle, but if you like it you should look up his original videos made in the streets (with cell phone). The guy is seriously talented. Anyone who doesn't understand patois will have a hard time with it.
...Impossible Kid. This emcee seems like he'll never run out of incredible things to say.
Someone did an analysis a few years ago that showed Aesop Rock has the biggest vocabulary of any rapper with any kind of commercial presence. By a lot.
http://poly-graph.co/vocabulary.html
Aesop Rock's "Daylight" got me into the underground hip-hop scene. And if you like him, Hieroglyphics, Souls of Mischief, Dan the Automator, Deltron 3030, K-Os, Atmosphere, CunninLynguists, Living Legends, those will scratch you right where you itch.
Beta Radio.

Sadly, haven't had too many great new discoveries lately. But here's two that have been satisfying:
I've long been a Mayer Hawthorne fan, seen him many times. I hadn't given his side project "Tuxedo" much of a shot, but it's pretty damn funky! Tuxedo - Do It
Another, while listening to some of Royal Blood's stuff I came across a band called The Blue Dawns. they're not bad - The Blue Dawns - Against the Tide
If you're a fan mainly of classic rock like me, you may have already gotten into stuff like Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Jack White, etc. I discovered this Canadian band at a basement bar in Chicago 2 years ago...they can jam and basically have theatrics of a band like Queen in my opinion. Check em out - Bend Sinister - Best of You
And I have to give a plug to possibly my favorite active guitarist in the world, Mali's Vieux Farka Toure. His dad was top 100 on Rolling Stones greatest of all time, and VFT is becoming a legend of African Blues. They call him "Hendrix of the Sahara". Met him a few times and thankfully was drunk so I could slur out a bit of french... Vieux Farka Toure - Safare live
Look up Disturbed's remake of Sound of Silence.

Not a huge fan of that band, but they rocked the shit out of Sound of Silence. Amazing cover.
I really like Disturbed. I think he has better vocal range than almost anyone in that genre. But, I've seen them live twice and they suck balls. Really disappointing.
I used to hate country music and now I like a few songs. So there is that.
You used to have a lot of you know what and now you're in the negative. What happened?
I'm starting to compile some string band - folk songs. A little violin and or banjo. Lindsey Sterling "Roundtable Revival" is one song

Kowloon Walled City - https://kowloonwalledcity.bandcamp.com/
Reproacher - https://reproacher.bandcamp.com/
Chelsea Wolfe - https://chelseawolfe.bandcamp.com/
Basically, things that are grim and slow and mean.
Just started listening to Chelsea Wolfe when her most recent album turned up on a couple of best of 2015 lists. Glad I found her.
I love the Carcass album cover you have for a photo. Heartwork was a beast of an album when it came out. Brings back some good memories.
Fun fact: It's a sculpture by HR Giger, the same guy that created the alien in the Alien movies.
My favorite Carcass album along with probably being my favorite death metal album ever. Death is the only other band with anything I'd put on the same level, and that's only if you consider their later stuff to still be death metal.
I could not get enough Cannibal Corpse, Obituary and Morbid Angel back then. Death was great too - I loved "The Philosopher". At the time, I remember being shocked that Columbia relased Heartwork. I went and saw Carcass after that "Surgical Steel" release a few years ago and they were just great. Such a good album - I was really surprised how good it was.
Harbaugh with him, Migos
Warning:the previous statement is not to be taken seriously
