well that's just, like, your opinion, man
OT: Best CHEAP haircut in Ann Arbor?
Nothing is Cheap in AA...
I would stay clear of barbers, as they are close to 20 dollars per cut...There is that Lady JAnes on Washtenaw...trashy, but I think they are cheap
The girls or the cut?
the girls are cheaper than the cut at LADY JANES! But you get a GREAT haircut for only $10
One of those "I'm just doing this right now to pay my way through college..would you like a haircut?", kind of places eh?
...yes. I went to Lady Jane's once, and only once, and that is, quote for quote, exactly what my "stylist" told me. I walked out looking absolutely ridiculous. I looked exactly like Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber. However, unlike Lloyd Brady, I couldn't pull it off. All of my friends had their camera phones out the next day once they saw the disaster on my head. A moment in my life I will never live down.
Case in point: stay away from Lady Jane's unless you're going for a buzz-cut...no wait, just stay away.
Was she HAWT?
By far the worst haircut of my life. I asked for an inch off (was about 3 inches long) and she cut one side down to only about a centimeter left, then proceeded to spend 45 minutes trying to 'blend' my hair, aka hide her mistake. I will not be returning.
The barber shop in Nickels Arcade. Good solid haircut for a good price. I think they run about $12 a cut.
I used to get mine cut there in the early 2000s. It isn't a pretty place, but the haircut is cheap and quick.
This. Also, if you want, they will write down your preferences on a card and keep it in their file, so if you go back and can't remember what they did the first time (which always happens to me), they will know.
That's where I take my kid and it's a straight $15 for him. He uses clippers on the sides, scissors on top. Pretty basic.
Next to pizza bobs, just south of hill
They give you free beer.
is that Coach and 4? At least that was the name back in the '80s
had the best skate sharpening around as well
I remember driving up from metro detroit to get my skates sharpened (plus I think my dad wanted to get some spots)
there are two barbers on that block. One is Coach and 4, the other, next to pizza bobs, is State Street Barbers
Coach and 4 has an autographed Bo picture that reads "To Jerry, the worst barber in Ann Arbor!" I laughed.
Coach and 4 is not a good cut. But that's not why you go there. You go there for the beer, the playboys, and the ticket deals. The skate sharpener has been gone for about six or seven years now. Glen was the only guy in town who knew what he was doing. Now I have to drive all the way to Livonia to get an edge.
If you want a good haircut and a shave, go to the guy between Rick's and Backroom Pizza.
Not sure if you're a figure skater, hockey player or figure skater but Fred's the best in the country - probably top 5 in the world. People ship their skates to him from around the country to get them done. He sharpens skates for current and past Olympic champions and medalists. Not sure where you're located, but if you're close by, it's worth it.
He's only $5 for hockey skates, but he's $20 for figure skates. I've tried going to other sharpeners to save money on figure skate sharpenings, but they would always mess them up. I always end up going back to Fred.
with the guys that work at one of the rinks in town, and they'll let you sharpen your own skates.
campus barber by the original cottage inn. walk ins for $12 i believe.
Second this. Campus Barber. Ask for Matt.
Campus Barber gets my vote
if you pay in cash (earth coin of the fibrous variety). $16 if you use a card.
Been going to matt for years...apparently he did Tom Brady's hair while he played here
...for Campus Barber. If I am downtown or on campus for meetings and need a cut, I always go here.
Cheap & fast. Plus cool Lego sculptures.
Stay away from Bo Ricks.
I don't remember the cost, but I really liked the cuts I got at the barber shop in Nickels Arcade
Are you missing that $8 Tuesday/Wednesday Grondins deal too? I about cried when I found out they weren't doing that anymore. Honestly I've had good luck with Mastercuts at the mall for around $12. Good luck man, its tough out there.
theres one of those cheap chain places on packard and stadium. great clips maybe. when i was there they did like 6.99 tuesday deal or something. i'd hit that up. it was very average, but quite cheap.
I never went wrong with the Aveda Institute on Maynard. Cut, wash, head and back massage all for about 16 bucks (they don't allow tips). I went there for three years during grad school and swore upon it for all eternity.
Until I moved.
a hand mirror and cut your own hair. Costs $30 once. I haven't paid for a hair cut in 15 years. I do miss the girl washing my hair though.
Should find out where Lloyd Brady get's his bowl cut done and go there.
in meijers is ok. Ask for Ashley or Amy. By far the best two in there.
Aveda Institute worked for me when I wanted a cheap cut. It's a student that cuts it, but I've only had like one bad experience in 20+ trips (and that's going to a different person each time, if you find someone you like, you can set up appointments with only them), most of the students know what they're doing, and they have an instructor check over before and touch up after. Plus you get a scalp massage and some awesome tea, and it's like 15$ (they don't allow tipping).
Get a buzz cut; do it yourself. I haven't paid for a haircut in 5 years and I look terrific.
I would second avoiding the big chains like Bo Rics, Lady Janes, Great Clips, etc., but it isn't impossible to get a good haircut there. Those places are complete gambles though. If you do go to one of those places and somehow magically draw the one decent stylist there, get her name and stick to that person. I can guarantee you won't get a good stylist again.
I'd say Aveda Institute if you prefer making an appointment and getting a "free" massage (altogether about $16, no tip, but you'll spend about an hour there), or Great Clips on Stadium & Packard ($13 plus tip) if you like to just walk-in and be out in 20 minutes.
Coach and 4 is the best. You can have as many beers (within reason) as you want for free, watch a game on tv, get a straight blade shave and haircut. Jerry is the man too. Its not the "best" haircut, but if youre not too picky its perfectly fine.
I cut my own hair, son.
My dad, the eternal cheapskate, taught me how to cut his hair to save some money and truth be told, it was a much better option than letting him just give up and regrow the mullet. *shudder*
have the wife do it. that's how i solved this problem.
New age hair salon. They are next to Aveda institute. They don't speak much English, so don't go for the convo, but they are friendly, fast, and actually do a really good job. I tried a few different places and my gf (now wife) always said I better go back to new age!
+1 for New Age. Not the cleanest place, but they're fast and affordable. Went there exclusively for the 5 years I lived in AA. Defintiely the place to go if you have spiky thick Asian hair.... but not exclusive to Asian hair. Ladies there are very friendly. Ask for June.
Ask for Leah. She's the manager and a good stylist.
It's good to know exactly what cut you want, though.
Bill's the best. I had him cut my hair the day before my wedding (nearly 25 years ago) and I never looked better. I moved away 20 years ago and he still knows my name. Quality guy.
Course Coach and 4 has a great legacy. My wife (then girlfriend) lived across the street from that block and the only time I ever encountered Bo personally was one morning leaving my girlfriend's place in my 7 Up "company car," which was a 1986 Escort wagon that naturally said "7 Up" on the side. It was about 5:30 or 6 am and Bo was just pulling his Oldsmobile away from the curb in front of Coach and 4.
He scowled at me. I will always treasure that memory.
Make sure you get a haircut from Tom. It's worth the wait.
