OT. Best Cell Phones?

Submitted by Blue boy johnson on
I have used a Treo at work for a few years and just recently upgraded to a Blackberry for my personal cell. After about a week to compare, I have to rate the Blackberry far superior. Surfing with the Blackberry ball is much easier than the cursor I have with my Treo, also the way the pages format on the screen of the Blackberry is much much better. I have to say the Treo is preferable in its editing functions and ease in deleting text messages Anyone else care to share good cell phone brands? Might be helpful to our fellow Mgobloggers with the holiday season upon us. PS: I was able to get 2 Blackberry's for $50 after 100 rebate for adding another line. Cost $20 to add the line but they gave $20 off a month for 2 years when I signed up.

I have to say I have a Droid as well and I couldn't be happier. I was planning on switching to AT&T and get the Iphone in October when my contract with Verizon was up but then my buddy who had the iphone couldn't get service in the Big House and I like having my phone work during games. So I was debating and then heard about the droid. I went to the kiosk in the Briarwood Mall and played around with the droid for a bit and ended up buying it. One small piece of advice for people who might buy this. I bought mine at Best Buy because it was 199 there and at Verizon stores it was 299 with a 100 mail in rebate. So I would suggest buying at Best Buy.

Whicn one did you get? I have a 2+ year old Pearl. I love it, but its definitely starting to show its age compared to the newer phones. I really want the BB9700, though I am considering the iPhone too. Internet access is a big factor for me.

I just upgraded from the pearl to the bold 9700 and it was well worth it. Besides it being just a much better phone the optical sensor is amazing and the picture and video recording quality are incredible. Texting and typing are so much better when each letter has its own key.

I have a BlackBerry Bold, I think it's awesome. The only bad quality is that if you spike it into the street while drunk, it's gets pretty fucked up.

Got the BB Tour a couple months ago as a replacement for my HTC Touch Pro. The Blackberry is amazing, but the OS is definitely aging. Windows Mobile phones are pretty hit or miss right now. A couple friends have Android phones and they look pretty cool.

There are so many awesome looking phones out, but honestly I think it all depends on your price. The top of the line phones such as the iPhone and Droid will cost you but damn are they nice. I've always liked the LG enV series and had the original enV for 2 reliable & good years. I'm hoping eventually the iPhone comes to Verizon but I'm not holding my breath. I want that phone sooo bad...

I would hold onto that original enV, the second and third both have issues such as, but not limited to: The entire front keypad on my enV stopped working less than 6 months after I got it. The phone shuts off whenever it feels like regardless of battery charge. I haven't yet discovered a pattern to this. Various internal keypad buttons are giving up on life. I got to play with a friend of mine's Droid, and would gladly pay for Verizon's grossly overpriced data plan in order to get it. If TMobile had better phones they could annihilate the competition, their plans are dirt cheap and my friends with TMobile consistently have better signal (in New York) than my Verizon abomination ever did.

I totally agree, the original enV was perhaps one of the best phones ever invented. When it came out it was as close to top of the line as you could get without going completely over-the-top. And I've kept it in such good shape that it is like I just bought it. When it does come time to switch phones I'm gonna miss it cause it was a good phone.

I think the Blackberry is a really good phone - you have a pretty solid web browser, first-rate e-mail capability, and a decent selection of applications. Plus, the Blackberry can be locked down for security purposes - it has built-in encryption and a number of options that make it appealing to IT professionals. In general, make sure you can live with the design of your phone. I always thought I wanted a touchscreen phone, so I traded in my old one with a physical keyboard. I quickly found out that while touchscreens look pretty damn cool and appear futuristic, they suck (IMO). The lack of precision and clunkiness of the touchscreen just pissed me off, and despite having a lot of practice with it, things that were trivial to accomplish (in terms of both time and effort) with a physical keyboard became a nightmarish Herculean excursion with a touchscreen. Everything was taking me four times longer to do with the new phone, so I went back to what I was happy with. I guess the point is to make fully sure you're going be able to tolerate your phone's physical design and interface before you buy it.

an LG Voyager right now. As far as touch screen, it appears that you're saying that touch screen immediately precludes physical keyboard. Well, the voyager has both. I like it, but it's not phenomenal or anything. I will say I would never go back to not having a physical keyboard. I have used the Droid, and it's awesome. Simply spectacular. A classmate of mine tried out an HTC Imagio while her fiancee bought a droid. She tried his Droid for a day and took the Imagio back. The only thing I can complain about with the Droid is the fact that the individual keys are not raised on the physical keyboard. Amazing phone.

I'm pretty sure almost all, if not all, LG touchscreen phones have resistive touchscreen, and generally suck. Compare an LG or lower end Samsung touchscreen phone with an iPhone and you'll notice the difference. Similarly, HTC's newest models have capacitive touchscreens and kick ass. In addition to the Moto Droid, check out the HTC's Hero for Sprint(branded as Droid Eris by Verizon) and the HTC HD2, to be released Q1 2010 by T-Mobile.

and am pretty pleased. Getting used to the touch screen (for things like texting and sending e-mails)took a little while, like others have mentioned, but I am as quick now as I was with the regular keyboards of My Curve and my Motorola Q before that.

I hate my BlackBerry Storm. The OS is goddamn laggy and freezes way too much. Sure, it ran a little better after I updated the OS to v5.0, but after a few weeks it regressed to even worse than before. Maybe I just got a shitty one, but my roommate and friend also have the Storm and they have the same issues. Edit: Okay, maybe "hate" is a strong word. I'm just often frustrated with the performance of this thing.

Slick OS, combination of touchscreen and physical keyboard, and Sprint's 3G coverage ain't too shabby. My only complaint so far is that interesting apps have been hard to come by, but if you're a techie the homebrew scene is thriving. In the interests of full disclosure I have to admit that my wife hates it, but that's mostly because it isn't an iphone (apple fangirl...)

I just switched from the BB Storm to the Palm Pre. What an upgrade! I was skeptical at first, but have found the Pre to be an awesome phone. Couple features include the ability to run multiple apps at once, GPS, NFL network and Sprint TV. I was able to watch USC beat ND on it this fall.

I'm upgrading to an HTC Droid Eris next month. It runs the same OS as the Moto Droid and I personally like the design better than the moto. Moral of the story- android phones are awesome.

Represent! I hate all the major cell phone carriers and their horrible business practices. So rather have a 300 dollar cell phone that I "own" (even while the carriers decide what I can or cannot do with it; case in point, the VZ navigator bullshit that verizon pulls, or AT&T requiring the higher priced data plan with the Iphone), I decided to pay full price and drop the quotes. I am not on a contract. If I travel outside the country, I just need to pop in a new sim and can continue using my phone. I can do whatever I want with it - tethering to my pc, navigation etc all for no additional monthly cost. Plus I can install anything I want on it, and customize it any way I want. Without a contract, and a without a phone to subsidize, my monthly payments are much lower. I make up the cost of the phone within a year :) If you are a believer in open source, in the market for a new phone, and well, kinda rich I would suggest looking at the Nokia N900 (http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-N900-Unlocked-Computer-Touchscreen/dp/B002O…). That's the phone I wish I could afford right now. Once the price drops to something more reasonable in the next few months I will probably get it.
